I like to tell myself I'm a fairly smart person. Not the smartest guy in the room but far from the dumbest. Probably pretty similar to the majority of posters here.

For that reason, I've never even thought about going and playing online blackjack or other casino type games at the online sportsbooks. Simple reason is that I know that it is a computer program designed to beat me more often than it lets me win. Therefore if you play it long enough, you will lose. Simple enough. Never played them and never will.

However, I'm starting to wonder if gambling on sports is more analogous with that than I thought. While not a computer program designed to beat you, you are facing an uphill battle paying juice on every loss. Simply put, if you go 1-1, you will lose a little money assuming the bets were of equal amounts.

Over the course of my gambling "career", I have lost more money than I have won. I know that puts me in the majority obviously but I wonder how high a % that majority is. 90%? 95%? Higher?

Even a cursory look at the boards and reviewing picks of the higher profile members here that are well respected, it is difficult, if not impossible, to find any poster who consistently beats the book. I'd be interested in hearing from the handful of locals who post here as to what % of their players beat them. What % of their players have won more than they have lost?

I think everyone acknowledges the fact that over the long haul, a bookie is going to make money. Likewise, over the long haul, the average better is eventually going to fall below even. We can rationalize our betting by believing that we are not the average better. We are smarter or know more about sports. And sometimes that may be true but does it matter? If you're still down money overall, it obviously doesn't.

These are just my random thoughts. I thoroughly enjoy betting on sports and will continue to bet in contests, on fantasy football, Survivor leagues, pick em leagues, etc..., but I am seriously rethinking the overall concept of gambling on sports.

Thoughts?

Advice?

I agree with you 100%. I have been gambling for 10+ years and I often wonder if it is worth it. I have learned an extreme amount of info betting on games - I almost feel sorry for people just starting out at sportsbetting...Because you live and learn, especially when you lose...But at the same time, there is no winning formula...That's why we are doing this right? The challenge.

Gambling on sports is completely fine as long as you are betting what you can afford to lose. I fund my accounts at the beginning of each season (football, baseball, basketball) with a certain amount of money and when its gone, I move on. Just don't bet what you can't lose.

Im up in my lifetime, but I don't expect it to end like that....

sports betting is a foolish endeavor for 95% of all people... If one of my good friends wanted to learn start betting seriously, I would do all I could to talk him out of it. Says the guy that sells parlay cards to his friends lol

I know all the time ive invested betting on and watching sports could have been put to something more productive.

Ever try to figure out how much you mad an hour at the end of a season? Usually not pretty.

There's not many winning sports bettors but there are a few. If you're a bookie taking action from those wise guys, you're going to get eaten alive.

it is if you plan to get rich doing it....its not if you take it for the entertainment and fun it should be

the funny thing i learned in the 9 years of doing this, is that it varies from week to week. I could go up to two weeks or more without finding a play, and then one week i could have 3 or 4. Now, I'm not disciplined enough to not bet in those empty two weeks, and that's where my flaws come out.

I wish I never got into this but now that I have so much knowledge about sports, I don't want to throw it away.

foolish is as foolish does.

Best entertainment value for my money is a weekend of football action.

Not foolish in the bonus whore days.

Strictly betting with no bonuses/ added incentive can be foolish.

if you look at it as a form of entertainment, then there's nothing wrong with it.

A lot of couples bet together and watch the games. I had a few women this xmas call me and to add money into their husband's account as a xmas present. Go figure. Then are are guys who specifically say don't call my home number because my wife will kill me. Go figure.

If you can't afford to lose it, then you probably shouldn't be betting.

also, when someone tells you that they have been betting for years and are ahead of the game ... they are full of shit.

Having said that, I am way up overall.

The reason why betting is foolish is because so many other endeavors allow for you to make way more money without the hassle and headaches.

I've made it a rule to get all my bets in early in the day before cracking my first beer. Helps with the money management angle. I'm not trying to make gambling my paycheck. To me it's the best way to watch a weekend of football, worth the vig for the entertainment.
