Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- The public deserves to know which NFL owners are driving the lockout of the officials that is damaging NFL's credibility. If the 31 men who own NFL teams (Green Bay is a publicly held team, doesn't have one owner) want their franchises to devalue, this is a way to do it.

-- What I'm saying is that Roger Goodell is the front man for the owners, but its not his money, not his fight. Some hardline owners are refusing to give the real officials what they deserve. Its hurting the game.

-- The officials in Seattle last night had the Redskin-Ram game in Week 2; sad to say, they did a way better job last night than in St Louis, and I am not kidding. They're awful.

-- Side note: The regular refs wouldn't have called offensive interference either. Offensive players are coached to do that on Hail Marys, because officials do not call offensive interference on Hail Marys.

-- Lost in the late game hubbub was fact that Seattle had eight sacks in the first half, second-most for a half in NFL history.

-- Mike McCarthy got totally screwed out of a game Monday, but he did not put his hand on any officials. If the NFL doesn't suspend Belichick for grabbing the official Sunday night, they're gutless bastards.

-- Games have ended in bad ways before; Atlanta won a game on a Hail Mary to White Shoes Johnson where he never got to the end zone, and the Raiders beat San Diego on the Holy Roller play when John Madden was coaching Oakland. But there was no instant replay to fix things then. There is instant replay now, but things still didn't get fixed.

*********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) September NFL games are increasingly becoming what August games used to be; a time for teams to shake the cobwebs out, get used to each other and position themselves for the post-bye part of their schedules. Except September games count, obviously, and preseason games don’t. Coaches are now so paranoid about injuries that its almost like preseason doesn’t exist, except for meetings and non-contact practices.

12) Not only have Cardinals won 10 of their last 12 games, they’ve won their last nine games that were decided by less than 7 points. Arizona has allowed only two TDs on 35 drives this season, and their last two games were against Brady/Vick. Not bad.

11) Eagles trailed 17-0 at Arizona Sunday with 0:06 left in the half; they had the ball inside the Cardinal 10-yard line. 17 points is two TDs and a FG, so kick the FG, go to halftime down 17-3 and lick your wounds, right? No, Philly got greedy, Vick got crushed and Arizona had a defensive TD that effectively ended the game. Shaky decision, horrendous execution.

10) Eli Manning passed for 234 yards against the Bucs in Week 2, in the 4th quarter alone. Dallas scored one TD against the Bucs, on a 23-yard drive in the second quarter. Go figure.

9) Lot of people scoffed at the late Al Davis when he used high draft picks on a kicker and punter, but years later, Sebastian Janikowski and Shane Lechler are still Raiders and still really good. If only all their draft picks turned out so well.

8) In the space of seven years, the Saints have been devastated by a hurricane in the Gulf Coast region, then risen up to become champs, then been devastated by a political situation where the Commissioner saw fit to cripple the franchise because of a bounty arrangement that had previously been a wink and a nod thing in league circles, even joked about on older clips done by NFL Films. But with lawsuits popping up, the league is cracking down on health/safety stuff and decided to make an example of the Saints. I’m not a New Orleans fan, but it still doesn’t seem fair.

7) Of course, on one hand the NFL talks about player safety, but they have teams playing on three days’ rest most every week, and they have small college officials overseeing games, which can get out of hand if the players don’t respect the men in stripes. It makes no sense.

6) Friend of mine has Time-Warner Cable, and saw NFL Network for the first time this weekend; he was mesmerized by the Red Zone channel. “I just sat there all day and watched it. Amazing.”

5) There were 140 (4.38/team) plays of 20+ yards in Week 1, 143 (4.46) in Week 2, but only 117 (3.9) in Week 3; other than the Tennessee game, which resembled an old AFL game, games were lot less explosive this week. People are talking about the refs more than the players.

4) Memo to Commissioner Goodell; Fans care more about the referee problem than the bounty issue, a lot more; he basically made the Saints forfeit this season over the bounty thing, while the league is held hostage by hiring a bunch of officials who are learning a very difficult job on the fly.

3) Certain teams (Ravens come to mind) seem to be harder for these guys to officiate, because they play through the whistle more, they talk more, which results in more pushing/shoving after each play. Their last two games have been very difficult games to control. We still need the real refs back, though, the sooner the better.

2) $3M divided by 32 equals $93,750, which is how much extra each team would have to kick in each year to keep the referees’ pensions where they have been. That’s a lot of what separates the two sides in negotiations, and for the NFL, it is pocket change. But there are egos involved, big egos, and the overall product is suffering because of it.

1) Once the regular refs come back, the next question will be, how long will it take the players to adjust to having better officials? Some players have hinted that the replacements are letting more things go. The regular refs will not let things go, so we might see a couple flagfests before everyone adjusts back to the way its supposed to be. I just hope its soon.

Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Kris Medlen, Atlanta Braves (9-1, 1.51)

Medlen is 8-0 with a 0.76 ERA in his 10 starts this season. He was named NL Pitcher of the Month in August and is 4-0 with a 0.90 ERA in four September starts. He takes the mound against the Marlins next.

Zack Greinke, Los Angeles Angels (14-5, 3.47)

Greinke held the Rangers to one run over eight innings Thursday, but didn't factor into the decision. The righty has a 1.48 ERA in four September starts and hasn’t been tabbed with a loss since August 19. He toes the rubber against the Mariners in his next start.

SLUMPING

Tyler Skaggs, Arizona Diamondbacks (1-3, 5.83)

Skaggs was touched up for four runs over five innings against the Padres in his last start. The 21-year-old hurler has surrendered nine runs over his last nine innings and looks to bounce back against the Giants Tuesday.

Aaron Laffey, Toronto Blue Jays (3-6, 4.80)

Laffey allowed four runs over three innings to the Yankees in his previous start. The lefty hasn’t won since August 5 - a span of eight starts. He looks to play spoiler against the Orioles next

How to bet the final days of MLB schedule
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ten days from now we’ll be into October, and the MLB regular season will be over. Before then, though, there is a whole lot of betting left to be done.

Capping the Division races

Only the AL East and AL Central are really in play at this point.

AL East

Crucial series: New York at Minnesota, Sept. 24-26. Minnesota has won four of six, and took two of four in New York earlier. If New York falters here the Orioles can get ahead. They play four “gimme” games against Toronto.

AL Central

Crucial series: Cleveland at Chicago, Sept. 24-26. Chicago has lost five straight, but it returns home for an easy three-gamer. If the White Sox don’t have two wins by Tuesday, though, they could be in trouble. Detroit is struggling, too, so Chicago needs to find momentum and maintain its lead.

Capping the wildcard races

American League

Crucial series: Angels at Rangers, Sept. 28-30. The red-hot Angels play six against hapless Seattle, so these three in Texas will matter most. With a strong performance they could climb past the A’s, who are faced with seven against the Rangers.

National League

Crucial series: St. Louis at Houston, Sept. 24-26. The Cardinals swept the Astros last week. If they do it again here and it should be all over in the NL.

Capping clinched clubs

Three NL teams have secured their postseason tickets. We’re unlikely to see a strong, representative effort from any of them down the stretch.

San Francisco Giants

With serious questions about who the Giants’ fourth starter will be and how to shape the rotation, you can be sure they will focus on this far more than on winning down the stretch.

Cincinnati Reds

The Reds celebrated their title Sunday by giving five starters the day off. Rest appears to be their focus for their remaining games.

Washington Nationals

They have a bit more work to do. They have secured a wild card spot, but they still have to win the division. When they do, though, Davey Johnson says that rest will be his only priority.

Capping teams out of the race

Give up on:

Miami Marlins

Ozzie Guillen is a serious distraction and Atlanta and Philadelphia will be hungry for wins, so it seems likely that the Marlins will give up - or keep giving up like they have for weeks now.

Toronto Blue Jays

They are an ugly, injury-riddled mess. They play the Orioles and then the Yankees, so they will feature prominently in the fate of their division title. A 0-8 record over that stretch is conceivable.

There is still fight in:

Minnesota Twins

The Twins have won four of six, showed no fear against Detroit this weekend, and could give those Tigers and the Yankees some headaches this week

MLB Top 4: Most playoff-ready pitching staffs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We’re just over a week away from October baseball and playoff races are heating up in the bigs. Teams can slug their way into the postseason, but it’s pitching that always prevails come playoff time.

We take a look at four contenders for the postseason with playoff ready pitching staffs:

San Francisco Giants (6/1 to win World Series)

The Giants already clinched the NL West title and now Bruce Bochy gets a chance to set his rotation exactly how he wants it. The manager has said he plans to go with a four-man rotation in the playoffs, with fifth starter Barry Zito the most likely to be tabbed as the long man out of the pen.

Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain had a combined 6-1 record during the club’s unforgettable championship run in 2010 and they’ll be joined by Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong down the stretch this year. The bullpen will certainly miss the playoff experience and swagger of closer Brian Wilson, but the group still features some power arms in Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla that should be able to close out games.

St. Louis Cardinals (15/1 to win World Series)

The Cardinals are the defending World Series champs and boast a pitching staff that’s playoff proven. Chris Carpenter has rejoined the rotation just in time for the playoff run after finally dealing with a nerve ailment. The battle-tested veteran was untouchable in October last year, posting a perfect 4-0 record.

Adam Wainwright missed last year’s storybook run because of Tommy John surgery, but he isn’t a stranger to the postseason. Remember, he closed out Game 5 against the Tigers during the club’s 2006 title run. Kyle Lohse and up-and-comer Lance Lynn round out a rotation that can most certainly repeat as champions. Closer Jason Motte has already eclipsed the 40-save mark and proved last year he’s a playoff performer, closing out five games.

Detroit Tigers (10/1 to win World Series)

Much like the Cardinals, the Tigers still have some work to do in order to play October baseball. Playoff bound teams will be rooting against Detroit down the stretch because nobody wants to face 2011 MVP Justin Verlander multiple times in a short series. With AL strikeout leader Max Scherzer factoring into the equation and feeling good after a return from shoulder fatigue, the Tigers have a potent one-two punch.

Closer Jose Valderde and setup man Joaquin Benoit round out a hard-throwing bullpen that quickly racks up Ks. Valverde has converted all four of his career save opportunities in the postseason.

Cincinnati Reds (6/1 to win World Series)

The Reds are postseason bound and have been a very reliable under bet all season long (59-81-13 O/U as of Sept. 24). Cincinnati's pitching has ranked in the top five in ERA, WHIP and quality starts all season thanks in part to its killer bullpen. Closer Aroldis Chapman leads a group that boasts a league-best 2.62 ERA this season. Sure, the lefty needed a break to rest his fatigued throwing shoulder, but he’s still the most feared strikeout pitcher in the game.

The Reds’ starters aren’t too shabby either. Johnny Cueto and Mat Latos lack playoff experience, but Bronson Arroyo, who has 11 postseason appearances under his belt, will be filling them in on the challenges to come.
