Mine sure bought some of the worst pieces of crap ever made....and every one of them brand new.

The earliest car I remember was , I think a Chevy Impala, could have been something else...too young to recall. I remember a Nova....they were doing OK to this point

but then, no particular order, just a few I remember

Vega
K-car ( Dodge Aspen)
Pinto
chevette
several Oldsmobiles ( like Cutlass)

basically a lot of american junk, when you should have bought a Corolla instead of a Pinto or Vega.

The 76 pinto was oddly reliable and Dad kept that POS until the end of his driving days.

The 70's were sure the time to not buy American cars.

Funny to think back about some truly awful cars.

I remember a 1975 Opel GT, and a late 70's Pontiac Le Mans that drank a quart of oil a day.

Strange, because before my Dad got married he had several sweet cars. I guess the key words there are "before he got married."

Wasn't that 76 Pinto the one that blew up if hit from behind?

My dad owned a couple of Porsche's before I turned 5 years old. I think it was too much power for him because he crashed one and then traded the other one in for station wagon and my mom had a VW Bug. Then the "ism's" set in and money became a struggle for us so we ended getting by with hand me downs, loaners and junk for the next 10 years. I think we went through a Toyota Tercel, VW Shiroco, Chevy Citation, a broken down bug with an engine you could hear 2 miles away and a banana yellow Gran Torino with furry seat covers that would just destroy a pair of black pants or a black shirt.

I remember my mom driving me to high school in that Gran Torino and I would ask her to just drop me off at the donut store and I would walk the rest of the way. She would be all like you are going to late and I was like I don't care. I also remember one time I was playing little league soccer and my dad was arriving to the game late in that beat up old bug and it being so loud that literally everybody the kids, parents, coaches and soccer refs all stopped and looked around trying to figure out where that awful noise was coming from. I was so embarrassed.

Not specific to the 1976 model year, but Pintos had a -EV tendancy to catch fire if hit a certain way, not sure if that was direct rear or right/ left side rear impact or whatever, but some sort of safety issue there with the gas tank not being protected well and vulnerable. I drove that car many times. I think the gas filler thingee was on the driver's side....many earlier cars were directly middle of the trunk under the license plate which folded down.

The thing about Pintos was that they were reliable little pieces of shit and got good mileage....sort of Ford's answer to toyota and Honda back in the early 70's when gas was being rationed and so forth. Trading in a Nova for a Pinto back then was reasonable....but you could have easily bought a GTO or something Cooler instead of the Nova back then, Dad !

Mom always had the new car and the say as to what it would be, and Dad got her hand me down, and whatever his car was became the trade in, Dad didn't give a shit what he drove, had the Pinto probably longer than any car since I was born.

As I recall the Nova passed to dad so Mom got a new Aspen. Dad kind of burned the car ( literally) cig maybe....came home drunk one night, parked it at the end of the neighbor's long driveway...no charges ! It burned a few hours later. He got away with one there ! LOL He was only busted once lifetime.

Somewhere the Pinto came in, then the olds Cutlass became the car of choice....a rather unremarkable automobile, IMO !

If I was them, I wouldn't have bought some new car every few years, I'd have gotten something I liked ( esp. when retired) and stuck with it. However dad didn't "wrench "at all...he'd go to full service filling stations. I'm not sure he could change a tire.

My Mom had a 80 Chrysler Cordoba and my Dad had a 79 Pontiac Grand Prix with the big V8 in it. I loved that Grand Prix when I was 16 ...

I never had a hotrod or anything , the coolest thing on wheels I probably ever had was a 66 ford f-100 and I drove it 100 miles a day in the 90's as a work truck in Vegas.

I guess I'm pretty bland with a 2000 F-150 and a 2001 Vespa 150 cc Scooter now, but that's purely transportation. , those and my 1st wife's 2007 CR-V. My parents would never have had a 12 year old Ford whatever...but a different era, alas.

My mother once had an oldmobile 442 , she was the hot rod mama.

One funny thing i remember (thinking around 74 or so) my dad and the next door neighbor both bought new cars on the same day. My dad bought an oldmobile 98 (which was huge like a caddilac) and the neighbor bought an mgb midget. After they showed off their cars to each other the neighbor said to my dad , that he could fit his car in my dad's trunk.

My parents always bought station wagons.

Could someone tell me why they called this type of car a "station wagon"?

It was called a Station wagon because it was used to bring people and luggage to and from a "train station"

The parents old station wagon has to be one of the most uncool cars ever. Picture yourself in HS and getting a hot date.....the showing up in a Country squire station wagon !

However it would be functional for having car sex. boat's van would be better, though.

It was kinda cool when you were a little kid and riding in the back of the station wagon with the seats facing the road behind you.

I bought a 1977 Ford Station Wagon in 1989, while I was in college. I bought it from my high school for $500. It was regularly serviced and in great condition. It was awesome. It could fit 10-15 people plus a keg. You are also correct that is was functional for car sex.

My Dad bought the first Mazda rotary engine in town. That's about the limit of coolness of our vehicles.

I remember all us kids getting turns driving it when we got it. I think I was 15 because I knew how to drive but I didn't have my driver's license yet.
