Guns
In a "year to date" report released in August 2012, the TSA reported that it had found 821 firearms in carry-on bags as of the end of July; 691 of those guns were loaded. "We are averaging two to four guns a day," Melendez said. (Do pilots carry guns?) "That's up from an average of two guns a day in 2003, 2004 and 2005. I'm not sure why, but many more people are just forgetting they happen to have a gun with them."

Grenades
The TSA finds live and inert grenades in carry-on bags on a weekly basis. Many are perfume jars shaped like grenades; some are war trophies military personnel bring home and others are souvenirs tourists pick up while visiting World War II sites in Europe. (The worst souvenirs to buy) "It doesn't matter if it's just perfume," Melendez said. "If you're standing at the front of a plane and holding up something that looks like a grenade the people in the back won't know it's harmless."

Stuffed Animals -- With Guns
In May 2012, TSA officers at Providence TF Green Airport in Rhode Island found a dissembled weapon hidden in three stuffed animals being carried by a child. (Stuffed-animal spycams) "A father was traveling with his young son and his girlfriend or ex-wife had put the items in there to get him in trouble. The police determined it was a domestic dispute," Melendez said.

Wedding Cake Knives
Many newlyweds head to the airport directly from their wedding receptions. How romantic! But many couples have the special knives used to cut their wedding cakes tucked inside their carry-on bags. (The worst wedding disasters) "It's too bad," Melendez said. "Like many items left behind at airport security checkpoints, those knives could have gone along if they just been put inside a checked suitcase."

Throwing Stars
"We find an incredible number of throwing stars in carry-on bags. More than you'd imagine there are in the world," Melendez said. He said brass knuckles, kubatons and other self-defense items also show up regularly on airport X-ray machines. (What not to take on the plane) "Much of it is illegal to have in an airport or even walking down the street," Melendez said. "And sometimes the people carrying those objects are taken into custody."

Gun in Book
In March, a passenger was caught trying to sneak a gun through the airport security checkpoint in Honolulu by hiding it inside a hollowed-out book. (Guns that don't look like guns)Other "artfully concealed" items the TSA has encountered include a gun hidden inside of a VCR, knives hidden inside of a box of tissues and in a walker and a stash of marijuana stuffed inside of a peanut butter jar.

Knife in Brush
It's not uncommon for TSA officers to discover combs and hairbrushes that pull apart to reveal daggers or knives. "We've also seen a lot of canes that have swords inside and belt buckles that conceal knives," Melendez said. (More concealed knives) "Some people buy these things and they don't even know there are weapons inside." No matter, those objects can't fly.

Spear Gun
Sometimes people don't realize their sports equipment might be on the "no fly" list. (Banned sports equipment for flight) But TSA officers routinely remove baseball and cricket bats, fencing foils, bows and arrows, ski poles, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks, golf clubs, pool cues, fishing tackle and, yes, even spear guns from carry-on bags at airport checkpoints.

Explosives and Ammunition
In addition to firearms, the TSA has discovered a surprising amount of explosives and ammunition in carry-on bags. (TSA scandals in 2012) In an August 2012 recap of the year so far the TSA's blog listed some examples of "finds": a 40mm high explosive grenade, a bottle wrapped in black electrical tape and filled with flash power, M-80 fireworks, an explosively viable cannonball and a live blasting cap.

Chain Saw
Power saws, hacksaws and chain saws are, understandably, not allowed on airplanes as carry-on items. But it is OK to travel with those items in checked baggage. (Packing tips for flying) Unfortunately, the person who put this chain saw in their suitcase at New York's Elmira Airport in early January 2012 created a hazard by leaving a full tank of gas in the chainsaw.

I'd like to see the results of some undercover testing. Something like trying to smuggle on a handgun ( with the authorities pre-notified), let's 100 times at various airports in various ways. I'd bet quite a few get through ( 10% perhaps ? )

It's the stupidly of most people.... I read a lot in the papers that say, " I Forgot " it was in there....
Just last week some Women got past the TSA and remembered after while on the plane that she had her Gun in her Bag. She waited until after she landed to say anything.... No arrest because she turned herself in, and has a Carry permit
( of course not on the Plane ) But they didn't charge her.

Yeah, but the old gun in the book trick is clearly trying to sneak something past authorities. Not only ignornace of today's technology, but a federal offense. But they probably didn't know that either.
