Curt Schilling might have to sell bloody sock

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling might have to sell the famed blood-stained sock he wore during the 2004 World Series to cover millions of dollars in loans he guaranteed to his failed video game company.
Schilling, whose Providence-based 38 Studios filed for bankruptcy in June, listed the sock as collateral to a bank in a September filing with the Massachusetts secretary of state.
Schilling also listed a baseball hat said to have been worn by New York Yankees great Lou Gehrig and his collection of World War II memorabilia.
The Boston Globe first reported the filing Thursday.
38 Studios was lured to Rhode Island from Massachusetts with a $75 million loan guarantee. The state is now likely responsible for some $100 million related to the deal, including interest.

unreal. You make millions playing a game you love and within a few years you're broke. No way this happens to me.

Maybe he could work out a deal with Monica Lewinsky to put up one of her used tampons and make it a double lot, winner take all.

Or just because your infatuated with video games doesn't mean you should dump 40-50 million of your own money to create your own. Any shithead, including the state of RI, should have their head examined for backing a business that banks on kids money. Anyone who knows anything about the video game business knows that unless your well established in that business it is very difficult to break in, near impossible.

What a waste....I actually feel bad for his wife and kids who will not have the same lifestyle. They are already selling their house and downgrading. I'm sure the kids will be teased in school rather than be applauded for what their old man did.

The Red Sox have some of the best sports doctors in the world and they can't tape on a bandage so it won't leak? Give me a break!

It was deliberately stained to give a rallying cry that Schilling was pitching through an injury.

First doctor: "Just take some of this red dye and squirt it on his sock"
Second doctor: "Ok, like this?"
First doctor: "Holy sh*t, not so much!"
Second doctor: " Had no idea it would squirt out that much, damn..."
First doctor: "Sorry Kurt, you willing to go out there after this idiot got so carried away?"
Kurt: "Sure, maybe someday I'll sell the damn sock on eBay or something...hahahah"
First doctor: "Would make a funny video game, wouldn't it? Try to squirt the dye on Kurt's foot while he walks to the mound...hahahaha, that would be funny, hey?"
Kurt: "C'mon, a video game? That's ridiculous...hahaha!"
Second doctor: "Wow, you guys crack me up!"

Curt Schilling is broke? Really??

In his own words: 'I'm tapped.'

Put all his money into a tech company that bombed.

Baseball Reference list his career salary at $114,158,000

If you subtract tax and agents fees, he's probably blown through the best part of 60-70M

Just think about it. Curt Shilling is broke and in his 40's. What is he going to do for income. It amazes me how many of these athletes don't reach out to quality investment advisors.

I mean, this is more understandable than most. He probably had a passion for this, and went all in.. just failed. Not like he can't see where his money went. It was a risky investment.....

i feel bad for him.... to me this isn't the same as the other ones we read about

He has lots of options not open to most of us. I'm sure he could easily make enough to live on in Boston just making appearances.

He could sell his signature in Vegas like Pete Rose does.

Agreed. He was employing 200 people I believe which, with a payroll like that, goes a long way to explaining where it all went.

When you start a venture like this, don't you separate your personal finances ( to some extent) from the business monies by incorporating or something ?

There is no excuse to blow through 100 million dollars earned as an athlete. Ten million is enough to live like a king for a lifetime. These guys need to be paid over time.
