I went to my doctor last week for my annual visit. She took my BP readings and they were 151/91. The top reading should be between 90-119 and the lower reading should be between 60-79.

One thing that causes high blood pressure is sodium. The reason for this is because sodium causes your blood to retain water which in turn increases the volume of blood in your arteries causing more pressure against the artery walls.

My doctor gave me the option of diet, lowering sodium intake and more exercise. I think my high readings were partly because I have been sedentary in the last few months so I'm exercising more and lost 5 pounds. My readings today were 128/79 so I'm not too worried.

I look at this as a blessing. High blood pressure is called "the silent killer" because oftentimes there are few or no warnings that you have it. Now I bought a blood pressure cuff and I will be checking it on a regular basis. Without this event it may have gone out of control in the future without me knowing it.

yes QL, i'm on two BP medications....i have to say a few things though

I used to have the same option....and i never did shit.....not losing weight and no changing my diet. BP meds are not permanent....you can go on them bring your diet/weight down and get off the meds. I think to let it go untreated is only unnecessary strain on your veins.

secondly, there is almost zero side effects with BP medications. The only thing is you have to take some daily pills. It won't shorten your life, change your diet, prohibit alcohol, etc.

with that being said, sounds like you had a fluke reading....good to know you are A O K

Thanks for the input shdw01. That's good to know about the zero side effects of the BP medicine. I used to know a guy who couldn't get it up because of his BP medicine but that was 30 years ago so I'm sure they've resolved that problem since then.

As far as it being a fluke reading, the last time I was at the doctor it was 138/90 and I had been watching it about once a month at the supermarket BP machine. I never knew if those were accurate though. At least I have the BP machine at home and I'll check it regularly so I won't have to worry too much.

Let's just be honest and cut to the chase.

People usually have high blood pressure because they are overweight and out of shape.

That is sometimes true but not always. I've exercised 3 to 4 times a week for 23 years and my weight hasn't changed in over 20 years. I checked my 2008 results and it was 120/70 so it had to be something else causing it besides being overweight and out of shape.

I agreed with my doctor to lose 10 pounds in 2 months. I'll go back to see her then. I'm guessing my blood pressure will be lower by then too and I can get off this diet. I'll continue to watch the sodium though and will take regular blood pressure readings.

Glad to see you are still getting regular checkups.

Exercise is a small part of it quantum. Your diet is the key to losing weight. Exercise helps but the diet is critical.

You can exercise 5 days a week for 30 years if you want but if you take in more than you burn who cares?

Your readings were a little high, but would need to be confirmed several times to indicate treatment, Those dream numbers of below 120(top number), are put out there by doctors and drug companies in order to maximize drug sales, as once people get on medication, it's usually for life. I wouldn't worry about a thing with numbers below 140/90( mine is typically 130/85).

Regarding sodium(salt) consumption, it's a good thing to try first, but in fact only about 30% of people are sodium sensitive, the rest of the population can consume normal amounts of salt without concern, salt is another scare tactic put out there by the lifestyle control mafia. Determining whether you are salt sensitive or not takes time, but can be done.

Obviously weight loss helps greatly as well, many people can lose as little as 5 or 10 pounds and regain normal blood pressure readings, thus avoiding medication.

Avoid medication as long as possible as one blood pressure drug leads to two, etc, and eventually side effects will not be insignificant.

I would recommend buying one of those blood pressure monitors($50 for a good one), and testing at home to determine what your normal readings are, as many people have high readings at the doctors office(white coat syndrome). If you have normal readings at home, but slightly elevated at the doctors office, you can use that if the doctor pushes the drugs.
