Better TV Series: The Wire vs The Sopranos

I've been rewatching the Wire, and love it. It gets my vote.

wow, I really thought this would go the other way....

Im sure Soprano will start to get some votes....

I think the characters inthe Wire were better and also more depth storyline and more things happen...

Omar is one of my favorite characters.. but also like Stringer... and Micheal.... plus McNulty.... just an amazing show, starting Season 5 Monday

I think one of the reasons that The Wire was so well written was because it was only suppose to be a season or two long. It was all suppose to just take place in the projects then it gained a large fan base and they expanded it to Baltimore instead of just the neighborhood.

Loved the way The Wire had a different focus each season. Great show.

The Sopranos is easily top 10 drama series of all time. The Wire is easily #1.

This thread makes me wonder about the rx. After 24 hours, there are only 18 votes? What kind of traffic does this site really generate?

If you didn't watch either of these 2 shows, you probably don't vote. If you have only seen 1 of the 2, you have no proper opinion to vote. So thats probably a good amount of people. I agree that traffic has to be down big time just from the general flow of this place, but not rom this thread

I don't think you can really compare the two series against each other because of the character POV. The Wire was shown thru the POV of the cops and detectives so the drugs and the street dealers were the antagonists. While the Sopranos was shown thru the POV of the mafia and their criminal and family lives. The police had very little presence except for the occasional small time bust looking to get somebody to turn rat or a RICO arrest here and there.

The better show comparisons would be:

The Sopranos vs Sons Of Anarchy
The Wire vs The Shield
The Wire vs Breaking Bad (for the opposite POV effect on the same subject matter)

I disagree. I thought The Wire did a great job of showing things through the eyes of both, especially in the last season. The drug dealers were hardly the antagonists in that season.

The Wire is in a class by itself for me. The Sopranos first 2 season were on par, but quickly fell off.

I would go in this order for myself when looking at the overall series and not just individual seasons....

The Wire
West Wing
Breaking bad
Sopranos
Mad Men

Then a drop off to
Shield
Oz
Sons Of Anarchy
Dexter

I really enjoyed Rome, but was not on long enough

Shows that I think have a chance to be really good running currently are:

Newsroom ( think this is great, but I really like Sorkin)
Boss
Magic City
Homeland

I enjoy the shit out of House of lies in the same way I loved Entourage
