I don't think most people have 5 gallon water bottles full, but maybe a coffee can full ?

It's really easy to just blow off anything that isn't a quarter and accumulate it in something close to a 5 gallon bucket.

You are the reason why the mint needs to make like 10 billion pennies a year ! LOL !

It doesn't take too many "hoarders" like this to make 10 billion new coins a year necessary ! The mint makes about 25 pennies a year just for you, and you keep thousands and thousands for yourself in a bucket, you HOG ! I assume most of this hoard is in pennies

I'm just kidding, of course....the problem is cents make no sense and need to be eliminated, ASAP !

I always wondered where so many coins could disappear to, this CT thread answers it ! We can't keep buckets full of mostly pennies at home, just eliminate the cent like Canada is doing right now and round cash purchases to the nearest nickel !

At the end of the day I always take whatever cash/change I have that is a $5bill, or smaller, and put it in a change cup. Amazing at how fast this adds up. Use it as "dumb money" for vacation.

My last 3 years in college i saved all my change and it totalled up to about 100 bucks each semester. My friend has one of those water jugs in his room completely full with coins. Im not even sure how much cash that is, would have to guess at least 500 bucks. Pretty good distribution of quarters in it too

with current coinage you'd want it full of dollar coins first, then dimes. Dimes and quarters are the same in weight respective to there values, but dimes nestor together filling gaps better since they are smaller.

as to $500, depends on the ratio of pennies to nickels and dimes/ quarters. $500 might be accurate if it isn't too heavy with pennies ( like 50%).

two bags of pennies ( $100) would fill up a 5 gallon plastic water bottle pretty well by my estimate, it might hold $2,000 in dimes as an educated guess

most people don't throw paper money in there. I can see tossing the change aside at the end of the day and even winding up with literally buckets full of it, but I can't see emptying my wallet of ones and throwing them into a water bottle, that makes no sense to me. I toss the coins aside myself. I separate quarters which I use at the laundramat, pennies that just accumulate and nickels and dimes that I spend when I get a few dollars worth. I should save the nickels, but I don't.

my method uses the coins up, quarters for laundry, pass a couple bucks in nickels and dimes here and there, but I wind up retaining all the cents, you can't really go into a store and give them $2 in pennies, but you can spend $2 in dimes easily enough, nickels should be hoarded, quarters for laundry.

I could accummulate thousands of pennies this way, I can't pay some transaction ending in .80 with 80 pennies , but 8 dimes isn't bad.

I do this also. I told that to Doug months ago. I have one of the old style glass 5 gallon jugs. Fill it up and bring it to the change counting machine

I did a google search and people said its somewhere around 1200-1500 in those 5 gallon jugs. The real problem with the thing is actually being able to pick this jug up

No way in Hell !

at least a bag of 5,000

a bag of cents is not that heavy either, off the top of my head about 40 lbs.

I'm sure many people have hoards of 10,000 and even 100,000 coins laying about ! It's awfully easy to toss those zinc tokens worth nothing aside. Nickels and dimes accumulate too.. Quarters are like real money and return to circulation. I can see where 5 billion +cents go every year . many folks have thousands of them in their homes

I do basically the same thing. I throw all $1's and all coins in there everyday. i count it about once a year. I last counted and wrapped the singles at the beginning of this year it came out to $2400 and the coins only came out to about $300. wrapped them all and threw them back in the jug. As for how heavy the 5gal jug can get, dunno but the coins filled the jug about a third of the way and it must have weighed and easy 30lbs

I had one of the smaller jugs, guess it was a 2.5 gallon jug and I promise you that it weighed well over 40 pounds.

First... I have a Box that holds all of my Coins from my Pocket... Not that large of a Box.. but it holds around $200+
I know because I have brought it to the Bank when Full.

My Wife saves $1 Bills... Yes she will not spend any $1 bills if she can.
In the past 2+ Years... she has a Total of Over $4,000 !!!!

I guess she's cheating a little since she owns a Business that collects Money... But to tell you the truth, she doesn't get much in $1 bills... But she also Takes Mine. LOL
My thing is, I almost Always break a 20 or 50 to get change... something comes to say, $4.15 and I have a 5, I still give a 20 or a 50
Then every few days she asks, do I have a $1 bills... If I have like 18+, I give her 10 ( I try to give her the Older one ) or ones that Look old...
