David Stern has been commissioner of the NBA since Feb. 1, 1984.

[h=3]NEW YORK (AP)[/h] NBA Commissioner David Stern will retire on Feb. 1, 2014, 30 years after he took charge of the league. He will be replaced by Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.

The announcement came at an NBA Board of Governors meeting Thursday.

Stern told owners during their two days of meetings of his plans, and the board unanimously decided Silver would be his successor.

Stern, who turned 70 last month, became commissioner on Feb. 1, 1984. He has been the NBA's longest-serving commissioner, establishing the league's brand around the world, presiding over team expansion and overseeing the establishment of the WNBA.

''You'll be remembered as the best of all-time,'' Silver told Stern, sitting to his left on a podium during a news conference.

Stern said he decided on his plans about six months ago, having guided the league through a lockout that ended nearly a year ago. He said the league is in great shape and he is confident in Silver, who has been the league's No. 2 since 2006.

''I don't know what else to say other than to recite what I told the owners yesterday in executive session,'' Stern said. ''I told them that it's been a great run, it will continue for another 15 months, that the league is in, I think, terrific condition.''

Just like everyone else i think stern is stupid, too old, and has gotten way too power hungry. This retirement is probably about 5 years too late.

However, I will say that I think he has been a terrific commissioner for the NBA. He took the NBA and he changed the way we look at it. He made it more about superstars than teams. Guys like Jordan, Bird, Magic, Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, etc. would all have great endorsement deals but it would be NOTHING like what they ended up getting. Their deals would be more like the Pujols, ARod, Aaron Rodgers, Manning type endorsements. and for branding it as a superstar league, I think the sport has grown for it. Domestic and internationally.

RIP Stern

best commish in sports, not even close. look at the NBA now, right with MLB, if not surpassed it as the second league to when he took the job. the nba was a cult fringe league like the NHL is now. now its a mainstream global empire.

The guy who's replacing him is being vetted by Stern himself so if you hate Stern, I don't see why you'd be happy about this.

How is making the nba about superstars, instead of teams better. You would think in a team sport, they would make it about the team.

it might not be better for the game...but it really saved the popularity of a fading league. Football is king and always will be but all the other sports have faded a lot...mlb, nhl, and nba....but somehow nba seems to be #2 on the sports popularity chart....and i think it is because of sterns transformation of the sport into superstars.

nevertheless, characters like shaq or barkley really shine with their playful attitudes...they owe stern their fortunes

Stern did alot for the sport, took NBA to next level. But I believe he also hurt the integrity of the league, especially in recent years

The officiating during his era has been horrible. Refs going out there with agendas and making sure a team wins because it'll be in the best interest of the league. That kinda thing is bad but NBA is not the only one. NFL does this too. I've seen two games this year where the fix was obviously in.
