So he is sending me a birth announcement and I don't know what I should get them.

Backgound:
Good guy and we were best friends from birth until 10 years old. He moved and I moved, found one another on facebook and now catch up via phone once a month on average. This is his second kid and we were not in communication when he had the first.

What should I get and who is it for? Baby? Mom (who I do not know) or my buddy? How much do I spend?

$100, unless that is a lot of money to you. I wouldn't go too far out of my way. A baby sized jersey for your local sports team should do fine.

Birth announcement? Never heard of such a thing.

I have heard of baby showers for the mother to give the family gifts. Never heard of a birth announcement before though.

Gift card. We have 3 kids and every time we had one, we literally got more clothes than the kid could wear for the first year, 14 pacifiers but only 2 bibs, 9 hats for the first 6 months, etc. While I appreciated any gift, some things were basically useless and if you're gonna spend the money, I'd rather it be worthwhile. Maybe they're struggling and they desperately need just diapers and wipes. Maybe they need a bunch of shirts but have plenty of pants. Maybe all they need is a crib mattress. No one knows. I'd give them a $20-50 gift card to Target with a card.

Babies R Us Gift Card, they can get almost everything they can possibly want under one roof for the baby. Leave it to them, they will know what they need more than anyone else.

Personally I've never heard of a birth announcement and depending on how "tight" you are with this guy would depend on how much of a gift card to send or no to send.

Thanks guys, going to go the gift card route I guess.

Another idea - they may be registered somewhere. You can register babies just like weddings at some stores so people can pick out what you want. Just another idea.

get him a box of rubbers along with a note saying, "if you're going to send me an announcement every time your wife pops out a kid you need to start using these things"

LOL, not sure his wife would get it. She has already written off one of our other buddies after seeing how he behaved at a cub/cardinal game...
