ST. LOUIS — The famous Rally Squirrel that darted across the field while Skip Schumaker was batting during the St. Louis Cardinals' 2011 championship run surfaced again Monday when its trading card sold for $157.50 on eBay.

The card — a 2012 Topps Baseball Variation Proof Card — made headlines in January when it was announced that a limited number of Schumaker’s cards would prominently feature the squirrel and not the Cardinals utility man.

A regular Schumaker Topps 2012 trading card can be purchased on eBay for just $1. But not the card he shares with the squirrel, which opened at $9.95 on Oct. 21 and saw 11 bids and a flurry to the finish before the auction ended Monday evening.

Despite the card saying 'Skip Schumaker', only a small portion of his leg and shoe are visible on the card as the squirrel darts across the plate.

The Rally Squirrel debuted during the Division Series last year, delaying Game 3 when he ran across the field. He became famous the next night in Game 4, when he returned and darted across home plate just as Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt was preparing to throw a pitch.

The Cardinals won Games 4 and 5 to stun the Phillies and advance to the NLCS before eventually beating the Texas Rangers to win the World Series last fall. Cardinals fans immediately fell in love with the Rally Squirrel and the team store at Busch Stadium began selling Rally Squirrel shirts, stuffed squirrels and other related items for the duration of their playoff run.

Rally towels handed to fans during later playoff games featured the Rally Squirrel and a playoff commercial produced by Major League Baseball even highlighted his dash across home plate.

The winning bidder of Monday’s auction seemed determined to walk away with the squirrel’s card. He made three bids on the final day, including the final bid of $157.50 with just 10 minutes remaining.

But those that missed out have another chance at the famous card. A second auction for a Schumaker Rally Squirrel card is underway on eBay with a high bid off $59.99 as of Tuesday morning. Bidding ends on Nov. 11.

I am a long time sports card collector over the years.. this is silly but I realize why it has value.. to st louis and due to the rarity of the card itself because of short printing... more than likely it could climb a lot higher than it is currently but then, surely it will crash down to 5-10$ after the dust settles.

so i hope the buyers realize.... buy it now while price is still reasonable and sell before 3 months
