I have a 2006 F150 Supercab that has reached 100,000 miles. It is ready for a tune up and I called the Dealership and was quoted a price of $1200. It seemed kind of high to me. I've never kept a vehicle with that many miles and I don't work on my own vehicles so I didn't know what to expect. Maybe it's time to trade it and my car also that is approaching 90,000 miles.

$3-400 is more like it and the truck should go another 100k with no major problems.

I'm always surprised when people get their mechanical work done at a dealership, unless it's covered by the warranty.

WTF are they doing for $1200? You should be able to get new plugs, and flush the coolant and tranny for 250 bucks(maybe less).

Yeah Stopped doing that for years now... They want $1100 to do my car. They call it something like a 100 Point Tune-up.. Fuking Joke..
I take it to the gas station and have it done for like $200

This is when you should buy a car/ truck

7 years old and with 100,000 miles on it

then spend $1000 fixing it up to put into tip-top shape.

I'm guessing a bit here as I'm not sure exactly what you have.

Your used value is probably like 7-11 k and a new one is probably near 40k

no reason a modern truck can't go to 200k miles and beyond.

a 7 year old truck can look almost new

I have a 2000 F-150 with 128,000 miles on it bought it about 4 years ago with 100,000 miles. it's got some rust being 13 years old and never garaged, but I'd have no problems about taking a 1,000 mile trip in it.

I thought $1200 was a bit too much. They told me some BS about the plugs cracking or breaking off and then not being able to get the plugs out if I took it somewhere other than a dealership. I think I will take it to a reliable mechanic and take my chances. Thank you all for your help and your opinion.

While that is true about the plugs breaking off its a pretty scammy operation to charge you for it BEFORE it even happens!! And for $1200 they must think they are all going to break on every truck they work on....So ask them why not bring it somewhere else since the plugs are going to break anyway???? Unbelievable how more and more buisinesses are turning into scam artists. i see it everyday here also. 1 of the reasons im still able to to get work around here because most people cant find anybody to fix anything.....every place they call comes out looks at for 10 mins and tells them they need a new one. There is no honor among thieves and its getting harder and harder to find ANYBODY who isnt a thief....

It is.... Our world is getting darker and darker with folks trying to get that extra buck by being a mild cheat.

I would say this, though.... I'm guessing that you should keep the truck and you should get lots of more great miles out of it. 100K ain't so much anymore. BUT, you should be having almost everything done that you have not had done in last 30K or so: This is around an ALL around service/maintenance... oil, radiator flush, tranny drain (flush is it called?), differential, air filter, I'm sure I'm missing some things.... But the effort/dollars you put into maintenance will pay lots and lots of dividends over the next five years.

I think I would find (by calling around to auto parts stores in your area) a reputable garage that is not a dealership. Your service would cost you more than $300 or so in my opinion if you get the whole service done. I'm guessing about $400 to $600 for everything.

What am I missing...repacking the wheel bearings? Is that a 100K thing?

I know I had my 2006 Taurus in for repairs and it needed a water pump, new serpentine belt, replaced all plugs and wires as well as flush the coolant for $408.

well this a truck that cost like 35-40 k new and is worth like 8k now, but it has another 100k miles to go....with a bit of TLC.

You'll need the tuneup stuff and brakes, battery and tires etc but throw a couple thousand into it and you'll get another 100k miles. I buy trucks/ cars at this age/ mileage.

Taking your car to a reputable shop is not taking chances. Implying that only a dealership can properly change plugs is absurd, if they told you that they are BS artists, and why take your car to a place that BS's you.

Dealerships are in the business of separating people from their money, legalized pick-pocketing. Find a reputable mechanic via word of mouth is the best route. Dealerships will always have suckers coming through their doors everyday regardless of their reputation, independent shops must work to maintain a good reputation and most of their business comes from referrals.

once you find a good mechanic, offer to pay cash and have no paperwork.....this works well with small shops where the owner likes to slip some cash into his pocket off the books. you'll get a break on the price and cash off the books works for the owner.

They are charging you a 100,000mile service, it's money out the window, you can have it done for about $500 including timing belt replacement and valve adjustment, and tranny flush from an honest shop the three things I mentioned are most important!

Never get a tranny flush....incredible bogus service. You have a tranny filter , why on earth would you take high pressuer fluid and flush all the dirt out the filter and run it back thru ur transmission. For what they charge for a flush you can get a new filter, new pan gasket and new fluid. Virtually anybody who has ever held a wrench in their hand can change all 3 in an hour. You can read about here..... http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/45#flushing

This site also has information on just about every type of auto problem u could ever have and will answer any they dont have info already posted on. Should be in everybodys bookmarks....
