NFL's Biggest Betting Mismatches: Week 10
by Jason Logan

Each week, we break down some of the underlying mismatches in the NFL hoping to give you an inside edge when handicapping the schedule. Here are four of the biggest betting mismatches from Week 10:

Pittsburgh Steelers at Kansas City Chiefs (-11.5, 43)

Steelers' speedy injuries vs. Chiefs’ new DC

Injuries are the great equalizer in the NFL, and with the Steelers suffering multiple mishaps to their speediest players, Pittsburgh could be in slow motion Monday night. The Steelers will be without road runners KR Chris Rainey and WR Antonio Brown and RB Jonathan Dwyer is nursing a groin injury which held him out of Week 9. The loss of those horses could have Pittsburgh leaning heavily on smash-mouth RB Isaac Redman. That’s not a bad thing, but it’s awful tough to cover all those points when you're slowly creeping down the field and keeping the clock on the move.

Kansas City should see a little more life on defense this Monday with head coach Romeo Crennel handing the stop unit over to Gary Gibbs. Crennel is dodging media criticism with the move, but letting Gibbs call the shots could shake things up with the assistant looking to make a name for himself. We’re not saying Kansas City – which sits 17th in total yards against and 30th in points allowed – is suddenly going to be a brick wall. But anything is better than the first nine weeks of the season.

Kansas City at Pittsburgh (-11.5, 42)
Pittsburgh's defense ranks first in the league in total yards (262.6) and against the pass (174.0). The Steelers limited the Giants to a season-low 182 yards of total offense last week despite the absence of Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu, who will miss his fifth straight game with a calf injury. Kansas City is mired in a five-game losing streak and has not held a lead in regulation this season. The Chiefs are 1-4 ATS during the losing skid.

MNF: PITTSBURGH 29 - Kansas City 10The Chiefs embarrassed themselves
in their Thursday night loss last week in San Diego, with four more giveaways,
boosting their bobble total to a rather amazing 29 in just eight games! K.C. has
never held a lead this season in regulation! As for the Steelers, their OL is now
starting to mash, producing 100-yard rushers each of the last three games
(Jonathan Dwyer twice and Isaac Redman once). Question: Do you think
current Steeler offensive coordinator Todd Haley would like a shot at the team
that fired him last December? Answer: Don’t ask such stupid questions. The
Men of Steel have played six straight “unders” at Heinz. TV—ESPN

Monday Night Football: Chiefs at Steelers

Kansas City Chiefs at Pittsburgh Steelers (-12.5, 41)

If Kansas City Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel crunches the numbers long enough, he might decide not to let his team board the plane for Monday night's game at the resurgent Pittsburgh Steelers. The early-season struggles appear to be a thing of the past for Pittsburgh, which has won three straight games, including a 24-20 comeback win on the road over the reigning Super Bowl champion New York Giants a week ago.

If that's not enough, the Chiefs haven't won in Pittsburgh since 1986. Adding to the daunting task is that Kansas City is mired in a five-game losing streak and has not held a lead in regulation this season. One subplot is that Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley will be facing the team that fired him as head coach after 13 games last season, opening the door for Crennel to supplant him.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Steelers -12.5, O/U 41

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the mid-50s with a 90 percent chance of rain. Winds will blow out of the SW at 8 mph.

ABOUT THE CHIEFS (1-7): Kansas City's season of misery continued with a 31-13 loss at San Diego on Nov. 1. The Chiefs committed four turnovers to boost their league-worst total to 29 and managed only 289 yards - a good chunk of it coming late in the fourth quarter. The lopsided defeat prompted Crennel to relinquish his duties as defensive coordinator so he can spend more time with the entire team to "get this thing right." Matt Cassel will make his second straight start since reclaiming his job when Brady Quinn suffered a concussion. Kansas City had the league's best running game at one point this season, but Jamaal Charles has rushed for only 83 yards in his last three games.

ABOUT THE STEELERS (5-3): The running game is what has turned things around for Pittsburgh. Isaac Redman gashed the Giants for 147 yards and a touchdown to follow up back-to-back 100-yard performances by Jonathan Dwyer, who sat out last week due to injury. Pittsburgh's defense has also come alive, ranking first in the league in total yards (262.6) and against the pass (174.0). The Steelers limited the Giants to a season-low 182 yards of total offense despite the absence of Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu, who will miss his fifth straight game with a calf injury. Ben Roethlisberger has thrown for 16 touchdowns against four interceptions and is one of six quarterbacks with a passer rating above 100.

TRENDS:

* Chiefs are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
* Home team is 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.
* Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Under is 6-0 in Steelers' last six home games.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Pittsburgh forced four turnovers in winning at Kansas City 13-9 last season.

2. Crennel is 0-8 all-time against the Steelers.

3. Kansas City, which is allowing 30.0 points per game, cut CB Stanford Routt this week. He was signed to a three-year, $18 million contract in the offseason.

Tale of the Tape: Chiefs at Steelers

Take a quick glance at the tale of the tape for Monday night’s showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Offense

Kansas City is mired in a five-game losing streak and has not held a lead in regulation this season. The Chiefs committed four turnovers in their most recent loss to San Diego to boost their league-worst total to 29. Matt Cassel will make his second straight start at QB since reclaiming his job when Brady Quinn suffered a concussion. Kansas City had the league's best running game at one point this season, but Jamaal Charles has rushed for only 83 yards in his last three games.

Steelers WR Antonio Brown has officially been ruled out for Monday night’s contest with an ankle injury he sustained in Week 9’s win over the Giants. Running back Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles) is questionable, so Isaac Redman, who rushed for a career-high 147 yards last week, would potentially start in his place. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has thrown for 16 touchdowns against four interceptions and is one of six QBs with a passer rating above 100.

Edge: Steelers

Defense

Kansas City, which is allowing 30.0 points per game, cut CB Stanford Routt this week. He was signed to a three-year, $18 million contract in the offseason. The Chiefs' stop unit is allowing 126 yards on the ground per game and will be in tough against the Steelers’ versatile running attack.

Pittsburgh's defense ranks first in the league in total yards (262.6) and against the pass (174.0). The Steelers limited the Giants to a season-low 182 yards of total offense despite the absence of Pro Bowl S Troy Polamalu, who will miss his fifth straight game with a calf injury. The Steelers will also be without T Marcus Gilbert (ankle) and LB Stevenson Sylvester (hamstring).

Edge: Steelers

Special teams

Kansas City averages 22.2 yards per kick return (22nd) and 10.7 yards per punt return (9th), but has yet to return a kick or punt for a TD this season.

Pittsburgh averages 28 yards per kick return (4th) and 10.2 yards per punt return (11th), but will be without primary return specialist Antonio Brown for this one. The Steelers also have one of the most reliable kickers in the league, Shaun Suisham, who has converted 17 of his 18 FG attempts this season.

Edge: Steelers

Word on the Street

"I have to impart on them the importance of protecting the ball for this team and sometimes to get that done, you basically have to threaten them. If you fumble it, I'm going to take you out of the game. And they will get the message." --Romeo Crennel on his plan to bench anyone who fumbles or throws a pick Monday night.

"Whoever's being productive when healthy is going to get the totes. I really think it's that simple. I'm not going to make it any more complex than it has to be." --Steelers coach Mike Tomlin on his depth in the backfield.

Bank Shots: NBA Betting News and Notes

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

Hottest ATS Team

Minnesota Timberwolves (4-2 SU, 5-1 ATS)

The T-Wolves are being discounted most nights thanks to missing superstars Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio. Those extra points on the spread have helped Minnesota backers cash in four straight games. Andrei Kirilenko is having a career resurgence with the Timberwolves and has been the glue keeping the team above together, leading in assists, rebounds, field goals percentage and most defensive stats as well. Minnesota is at Dallas Monday before coming home for three straight – Charlotte, Golden State, Denver.

Coldest ATS Team

Chicago Bulls (4-2 SU, 1-5 ATS)

The Bulls went 0-4 ATS this past week, most recently blowing a cover in an 87-80 win over Minnesota. Chicago needed 18 points from Nate Robinson just to get the victory after PG Kirk Hinrich left with a hip injury, and Carlos Boozer mustered only two points. The Bulls backcourt is already dangerously thin without Derrick Rose, and now must lean on the erratic Robinson for Monday’s home tilt with Boston and an upcoming five-game road trip - AKA “The Circus Trip” - with the circus setting up camp in the Windy City for the next two weeks.

Hottest OVER BET

Cleveland Cavaliers (2-4 SU, 5-1 over/under)

The Cavaliers are in the midst of a six-game road swing, having played over the total in the first four stops on that run. Cleveland’s defense has allowed opponents to average 103 points on 50 percent shooting during that span, including 107 points to the Phoenix Suns, who came back from 12 points down late in the game Friday night. The Cavs have relied heavily on their starters, with head coach Byron Scott dipping just four deep – only two reserves getting serious time – down the bench. The tank could already be running low, just in time for a tough stretch that sees Cleveland at Oklahoma City, at Brooklyn, home to Dallas, and at Philadelphia.

Hottest UNDER BET

Indiana Pacers (3-4 SU, 2-5 over/under)

The Pacers were already without the firepower of SF Danny Granger, and will lack that punch for the next three months. Indiana is scrambling to make up that offense, averaging just 90.4 points a night – 27th in the NBA. The Pacers scored only 89 points in a close win over the Washington Wizards Saturday, turning to their defense to get the job done. Indiana has remained one of the stingiest teams in the league, allowing foes an average of only 92.4 points. It faces Toronto, Milwaukee, Dallas and New York this week.

Scouting the Schedule

-- As mentioned above, the Bulls head out on their annual “Circus Trip” this week. The extended road swing has been a thorn in the franchise's side for many years. Chicago has gone 8-12 SU on its last three “Circus Trips” (didn’t have one last season with the lockout) but has posted a 12-8 ATS mark, including a 6-1 ATS record in 2010, in those games. From 2003 to 2007, the Bulls were 6-26 SU and 12-20 ATS when the circus bumped them from the United Center.

-- Miami has kept the ball rolling after its NBA Championship last season. The Heat are off to a 5-1 start (4-2 ATS) with four of those five wins coming in South Beach. The reigning champs get their first test of the season in the shape of a six-game road trip, which opened with a win in Atlanta Friday. LeBron and Co. head to Memphis, Houston, Los Angeles (Clippers), Denver and Phoenix, playing five games in seven nights. Dwyane Wade is expected to return for those contests after missing time with an illness.

-- The Lakers hope a coaching change and an extended home stand can right the ship after a slow start to the schedule. Los Angeles, which just fired head coach Mike Brown, stays in the Staples Center for five games – one of which could be a homecoming for Phil Jackson, who is reportedly close to rejoining the team. The Lakers were a great home team last season, going 26-7 SU, and there may be some value with them until the coaching mess is sorted out. They host Sacramento, San Antonio, Phoenix, Houston and Brooklyn.
