Is that even what they are called?

Anyways, my wife has been reading a lot lately, think it may be something she would use. At the same time, I am worried that she wouldn't use it... You or the wife use one? Thoughts on the different kinds? Anyone get one and go back to books??

Thanks in advance for the information

defying.. if u have a laptop she can or does use....imo an e-reader is very unnecessary imo

basically dont get an e-reader at all.. instead get a tablet in color... I don't recommend them as it will be a paperweight imo if u use home desktop and/or laptop frequently...

but if u must get one at least do yourself a favor and get one that you can put android software on (Nook Color) or bout 90% of the newer ones out there are google android loadable products.. that way u can put apps/free books/etc on it and not pay up the butt for a plain old black n white useless tablet that doesnt do 99% of what a $99 one would do if it had android software and u could watch movies/play games/download things/ watch sports/etc.. endless possibilities my friend...including all websites u visit including the rx should be fully useable on a android based tablet with browser apps like Dolphin HD.

to sum this up (heh).. i wouldnt get one unless u truly believe she will use it.. but even then get a tablet that will 100% either come with Android software or one that you can load it on their by sd card installation... that way when she ends up "not" using it...u can use it to watch sports/movies/forum surf/etc and will still get use out of it

gl bud and imo hit the black friday ads up and im sure u can get a 100$ or less one that will blow away the originator black n white kindle or nooks.

I bought my first Kindle about a year ago and I have really become a big fan. I'm always into at least one book, so it's handy as all get out. The public library where I live has e-book checkout available over the Web, which is becoming really common, and Amazon puts books on sale every day. I've bought a few good reads for a buck or two.

The new Kindle Paperwhite has gotten really great reviews for ease of reading -- no glare, backlighting, etc. -- so that's worth consideration, but the plain old Kindle is now only about $70 since they've realeased that new model. The plain Kindle is what I have, and I find it no strain on the eyes and light as a feather. It was a great purchase for me.

If you do purchase a Kindle, you generally have the option of getting a version with ads for $10 or $20 less than the ad-less version. In my experience, the version with ads is actually a better purchase, since those special offers are where they make available the daily book deals.

Murph, an e-reader is so much easier to hold than a tablet, much easier to carry around and has much less glare in bright light, so it's easier on the eyes. For people who read very frequently, tablets aren't nearly as good for the job.

I too agree with All American here. A plain Jane kindle works wonders. It's also the best to sit by the pool and in the sun with as there is no glare at all. Plus, it basically cost pennies now, and that helps out if you're not positive she will like it. I will go on to say that it's the best gift I've gotten the old lady in years bc now when I'm watching games or we are traveling, she stays quiet and out of my way by keeping her nose on the Kindle.

Why waste your money on a kindle or Nook. [have had both and prefer Kindle by a mile] when an Ipad will do the exact thing both can do as well as give you a fabulous web browser. Nothing compares to the idiot proof versatility of the Ipad. If the cost is too much, buy a refurb from the apple site. It comes with the same warranty. Thank me later

Bushay is correct. I have a laptop and an iPad and I use the iPad far more. Much more convenient and use both the kindle and nook formats.

prolly too late bud... but

paperwhite more for reading only as people said.. much lighter and u can have it in direct sunlight.. fire is more for android apps usage and doing 100s of other things.. so if u think she will go on facebook, play angry birds...n everything else with it then get the fire imo.. if its strictly for reading the the paperwhite makes sense... of course the fire is the better deal based on price and functionality.

You can get the Kindle technology on phone, tablet, and laptop. Don't understand why someone would pay for a stand-alone version but my mom has one and she swears by it. I have read books on my phone (when I had a smartphone) and tablet. Seems like a waste of money as AMZN really wants the recurring book buying revenues versus the hardware, but I guess to each his own.

I'm old school. Go to library. Get books. Read them. Call me Dinosaur (just not Viejo, lol).

Agree w/ Chop here... The great part about dedicated E-Readers is that the screens don't cause nearly as much fatigue on your eyes, and are made to be used in many different light sources. Also, the battery life is *vastly* superior on a regular Kindle (as opposed to a true tablet). I love my Kindle Fire, 'cause I was able to root it and put a shiny new rom on it... Download movies and such... But I wouldn't want to read more than a magazine article or two on it.

All that said, I really like actual books.
