Struggling Hawaii visits Air Force Friday night

Kickoff: Friday, 9:30 p.m. EDT
Line: Air Force -21.5, Total: 61.5

A pair of Mountain West teams eager to snap losing streaks meet on Friday night when Air Force hosts Hawaii.

The Warriors are riding a seven-game losing skid (SU and ATS), falling by a combined score of 339 to 112 (48-16 avg. score) with a total of 24 turnovers during this skid. The Falcons are on a similar slide, going 1-5 ATS in their past six contests, losing the past two games outright by a combined score of 69-30 due partly to an uncharacteristic nine turnovers. Air Force still ranks second in the nation in rushing offense though (335 YPG), and is 11-6-1 SU all-time versus Hawaii, but these schools have not met since 2001.

Hawaii QB Sean Schroeder has had a subpar season (9 TD, 10 INT), but he's been especially awful in his past three games, completing just 45-of-95 passes for 462 yards (4.9 YPA), 1 TD and 5 INT. Hawaii's ground game has also been non-existent for most of the season (99.8 YPG, 116th in FBS), especially with its minus-14 yards on 33 carries versus Boise State last week. The main problem with the Warriors has been carelessness with the football. They have at least three giveaways in six straight games, committing 22 turnovers in this span. And the defense hasn't been able to make up for this by forcing miscues on their own, tallying 0-to-1 takeaways in six of the past seven games.

Army thwarted Air Force's triple-option two weeks ago (103 yards on 43 carries, 2.4 YPC), but the team bounced back with its typical 320 yards on 68 carries (4.7 YPC) in last week's 28-9 loss at San Diego State. The school has had zero trouble rushing the ball at Falcon Stadium, galloping for an eye-popping 2,058 yards (412 per game) in five home games. With Hawaii surrendering 293 rushing YPG in the past two contests, Air Force will not deviate from this heavy ground game. QB Connor Dietz has attempted just 104 passes in 10 games, but after not throwing a pick in his first eight contests, he's tossed three interceptions during the two-game losing skid. That is just a small part of the Falcons turnover problems in the past four weeks, as they have 14 giveaways in these four games.

Hawai'i is awful, 0-8 vs I-A teams; only game they covered was a 49-10 (+40) loss at USC- they've been outscored 77-10 in first half of last two games. Only one of their five road losses was by less than 35 points. Air Force lost its last two games, is just 1-5 vs spread as a favorite (1-2 as a home favorite). Warriors haven't played Air Force since 2001. MWC home favorites are 10-5 vs spread. Four of last five Hawai'i games went over total, five of last six Air Force games stayed under.

FAU covered its last games (2-6 SU) but was underdog in all eight; this is only their third home game vs I-A opponent (1-1). FIU (-17) pounded FAU 41-7 LY, ending five-game skid in local rivalry where faves covered five of last six games; Panthers lost last couple visits here, 21-9/28-21. FIU lost seven of last eight games; they're 2-2 as road underdogs. This is a busride game, so not like any travel involved. Sun Belt home favorites are 5-15 against spread. Three of last four FAU games went over total.

Florida Atlantic: Quietly Piling UP Money for Bettors
by Jon Campbell

The Florida Atlantic Owls have been one of the best kept secrets in sports betting this season. They’ve now amazingly covered the spread in eight straight games and rank in a tie as the sixth-most profitable team in the country for college football bettors at 8-2 ATS (against the spread).

The Owls have done it all quietly, tucked away neatly in the unheralded Sun Belt Conference, where the only games appearing on ESPN are on the “U” and they are played on days that end in “riday”. The Owls are also just 3-7 straight up this season, a record typically not associated with raking in profits for bettors.

Well the secret is out, for those who have been listening. FAU opened as a 1-point underdog for Friday’s home game against FIU in the Shula Bowl and sharps quickly propped the Owls up to a 2-point favorite.

It marks the first time FAU has been favored against an FBS squad since Nov. 13, 2010 when the team was an 11.5-point fave against La.-Lafayette. The closest the Owls came to being favored this season versus an FBS foe was when they were a 4.5-point dog on Oct. 20 at Southern Alabama and lost 37-34 in OT.

FAU has been slow to get rolling this season under new coach Carl Pelini with new systems while playing in a brand new stadium. But Pelini told the Palm Beach Post recently he thinks his team can win its final three games.

The Owls ended a 15-game road losing streak with a 37-28 win as a 15.5-point underdog over the weekend. One clear sign of improvement is in the yardage battle. FAU was badly out-gained in yards in its first three games against FBS competition this year. But then it lost the yardage battle by a mere 40 yards combined in its next two games and has now won the yardage war in three of its past four games.

One area they’ll want to clean up on to get past FIU is defense, though. FAU hasn’t held an opponent to fewer than 24 points in any of its past five games.

-- First road game for Rutgers; they were upset by St Peter's in opener; Knights have 3 starters back from 14-18/6-12 team; they're picked #11 in Big East, whose teams are 4-1 vs spread on road when spread is less than 10 points. Princeton won 59-57 at Rutgers last season.
-- Denver lost 80-59 at California LY; Bears won first two games by 13-17 points- they have 3 starters back from 24-10/13-5 team. Pac-12 clubs covered five of six games with single digit spread. Pioneers lost opener at Iona 65-58, after being down 23 at half- they're picked #2 in WAC.
-- Fresno State won 55-47 at Pacific LY; Bulldogs won a hideous 39-30 game at Cal-Riverside Wednesday- they led 13-11 at half!!!, but they did lose opener by hoop at Texas, so they must have some talent. Bulldogs has 3 starters back from LY. Pacific has all 5 starters back (11-19/6-10).
-- Vanderbilt's leading returning scorer averaged 3.1 ppg LY, so they're starting over; Commodores beat Oregon 78-64 in Nashville LY, but that team finished 25-11. Ducks have seven freshmen and two JC transfers after 3 of their 5 freshmen recruits LY transferred- they're rebuilding.

-- Long Beach State lost 84-78 in Chapel Hill LY, but they had seniors all over place; this 49er team has three transfers (not all of whom are in lineup yet) and five freshmen- they lost 62-44 at USC Tuesday. North Carolina is also young but lot more talented- they're on way to Maui.
-- Oklahoma State needed OT to beat Akron yesterday; they had couple guys play 40 minutes. OSU is picked #5 in Big X. Tennessee had three guys play 30+ minutes yesterday, but no one played more than 34 as Vols beat Asheville by 7 (up 10 at half). Vols are #3 pick in SEC.
-- UMass played seven guys 20+ minutes yesterday, none more than 34 in 77-75 win over Providence team with six scholarship players. UMass is #5 pick in A-16. NC State is picked to win ACC, high praise in itself; they survived Brown's 1-10 shooting Thursday to beat Penn St. by 19.
-- Baylor whacked Colorado 80-63 in 2nd round of NCAAs last March, but Bears graduated whole frontline- Jackson hit 6-10 from arc, had 31 in win yesterday, but Austin has gimpy ankle, minutes may be limited for this game. Well-coached Buffs held Dayton to 32% shooting yesterday.
-- St John's shot 50% inside arc in 64-53 win at Charleston yesterday, its second quality win (Detroit) of week; Red Storm had three guys play 35+ minutes. Murray State was up 45-19 at half over Auburn, won by 20- they made 11-23 from arc. No starter played more than 26:00.

-- Wake Forest is well-coached, but has only one junior, two seniors, so they're real young. Deacons beat Radford by 12 in opener- they're #11 pick in ACC, but improving. UConn beat Michigan State in Germany in its opener last week; they have new coach, good PG in Boatright.
-- Villanova was down 6 with 0:40 left last night, rallied to beat Purdue in OT; they had four kids play 33+ minutes, outscored Purdue 33-16 on foul line. Alabama already has 3-point wins over South Dakota State, Oregon State, two good teams- only one kid played 30+ min. last nite.
-- Notre Dame has 4 starters back from 22-12/13-5 team; they're #3 pick in Big East. Irish won by 9-27 in first two games, allowing 53 ppg. They step up in class playing St Joe's squad that has all 5 starters back from a 20-14/9-7 team- Hawks hammered Yale by 26 in their opener.
-- Clemson's team is five freshmen, six sophs, two seniors, so games on road could be dicey early on; Tigers beat Furman by 10 LY, have date vs Gonzaga Thanksgiving Day in Orlando. Paladins lost three starters from LY's 15-16 team. ACC favorites are 10-4 against spread this month.
