+1, another example was Purdue being up by 3 and running down the clock and still snapping the ball with 10seconds on the playclock instead of taking every second off the clock...
Clock management by some of these coaches at times is just ridiculous. Another thing I don't get: How can a team like Oregon have a crappy kicker like that: Almost every season at least 1 or 2 games come down to a FG to either win it or tie it and still they can't find a better kicker than that? Just seems like it's more important to some teams to recruit their 6th LB, DE WR or LT than spending some time to find a decent kicker that can somehow consistently make FGs from at least 45 yards out....
You might not be able to recruit the top tier because of the reason you stated, but imo there should still be better kicking talent out there and available to a school like Oregon than a guy, who's range tops out around 40yards and who's not even that accurate from inside 40 yards.Im sure chip Kelly would love to have a great kicker.
But its probably almost impossible to convince a decent kicker to go there.
This is for informational purposes and not necessarily about using timeouts. I believe I'm correct about this, but if someone knows differently, go ahead and say so.
I don't know how many, if any, coaches know this but there's a trick you can play when your team has the ball and a lead and there's just enough time left that you can't run out the clock. Suppose you do 3 running plays and the defense uses their TO's to bring up 4th down with about 35 to 60 seconds left in the game.
Here's the trick, which is probably more effective when the defense is out of timeouts. With the game clock running, stand over the ball until there's just a few seconds left on the play clock. At that point, have an offensive player invoke a false start penalty. The ref will stop the clock and move the ball back 5 yards. After spotting the ball, the ref will restart both the play clock and the game clock. If your intention is to drain the game clock, they actually reward you for taking a penalty and let game clock run another 30+ seconds before snapping the ball and the defensive team is screwed.
