HANG TIME, Texas — Let’s face it. Maybe we’re getting past the point in the debate about whether Rajon Rondo has eclipsed Chris Paul, Steve Nash, Deron Williams and Tony Parker as the best point guard currently playing the game.
Now he’s closing in on history.
After sitting out Thursday’s loss at Brooklyn with a sprained right ankle, Rondo returned to the Celtics lineup for his second 20-assist game of the season and his 33rd consecutive time of dropping double-digit dimes. That’s the thin air of the gods. That puts him only four behind John Stockton’s best string of 37 straight and at least gives him a distant peek at Magic Johnson’s all-time record of 46 in a row.
“Something I look forward to every game is just trying to make my teammates happy. And somehow I keep getting to 10,” Rondo said. “Tonight it was a collective team effort as far as assists.
“I’m making some OK passes — just taking what the defense gives me. It means my teammates are making shots.”
So, give him one more big assist in spreading around not only the wealth, but the credit to his teammates.
This was an entirely different team than the one that went down to the Nets without Rondo two days earlier. The Celtics came out running and attacking the Raptors as he dished off for seven assists in the first quarter alone. When Toronto tightened things up in the second half, first he executed a perfectly-placed lob to Chris Wilcox for a dunk and his 19th assist and then drew the defense to him and whipped the ball to a wide open Jason Terry for a jumper and No. 20.
There’s no question that Kevin Garnett is still the snarling, barking face of the Celtics — the first name that comes to mind when you think who gets under the skin of opponents and who can be the constant irritant and defensive stopper that makes an aging Boston team still a real threat in the Eastern Conference.
Paul Pierce is there to make the tough clutch baskets that have always been his trademark, while Terry has moved nicely into the spot in the lineup vacated by Ray Allen’s move to Miami.
But the time has come to face the facts. If the Celtics are going go far and make another deep playoff run, they’ll be riding on the talents of Rondo, which are somehow still under-appreciated.

Anyone that doesn't call Chris Paul or Derrick Rose the best PG in the NBA has lost their mind.

Rondo is closing in on the NBA record for double digit assists games in a row, but someone has lost their mind if
he's in the discussion for best PG in the league? Puhhhlease.

Show me where I said he's not in the discussion.

If he can get a better free throw and develop a 3 or jump shot he would be the best

Man, I guess I still missed where I said Rondo is not in the discussion as the NBA's best PG.

I guess I don't get where you are coming from.

So, you're saying Rajon is in the discussion, but if you don't conclude that Chris Paul or Derrick Rose is the best,
you've lost your mind? Why would Rajon even be in the discussion if it's so clear cut in your opinion, that someone
would be insane not to pick CP or Derrick Rose?

Let me clarify...Chris Paul and D. Rose are either 1 or 2 and I see no difference between the two when it comes to the best PG in the NBA. I see the next tier behind them to be either D. Williams or Rondo hot on their heels with a close Westbrook and fast rising Irving close behind.

Put it this way, you have Paul, Rondo and a healthy D. Rose and you're down one conference championship on the line. Who is the no kidding clear cut guy you want with the ball? No way you can choose Rondo over Paul or Rose. It's not possible.

He is absolutely in the discussion with what he has done in boston. He can't shoot as well as the other top pg's, but sometimes not shooting is a good thing (i.e. Derrick Rose, who shoots too many 3's.

I would say right now it is close between Paul, rose, rondo, parker. Nash was the best a few years ago (and one of the best ever) but he has clearly lost a step.

If I had to rank these guys............

1. Tony Parker - only guy on here that excels at jump shots, 3's, going to the basket, and of course passing
2. Derrick Rose
3. Rajon Rondo
4. Chris Paul

Parker and Rondo both have rings.

Chris paul has the talent, but he doesn't seem to lift the team on his back like these guys IMO.

Would you consider Mario Chalmers a better PG than Chris Paul since Chalmers has a ring? Let's be clear, when Rondo won a ring, R Allen, P Pierce and K Garnett all outscored Rondo in the playoffs.

Rondo averaged just 10.2 PPG and 6.6 APG and Pierce was close on his heals averaging 4.6 APG. Rondo didn't lift anyone on his back during that run.

I would consider D. Rose to be a better all around player. He is Jordan in a PG body. Carries a team. And would be my first pick in starting a team.

Paul and Rondo are pretty much even. One offers a little more than the other. I feel Rondo is the better pure PG who could score just as much as Paul (even though their averages aren't that far off) if he wanted to. I watch Rondo more than Paul so I'm sure my opinion is biased but I have never seen a better passer than Rondo. He can lure a defense to him to set up a teammate like a magician. His passes are always to the shooters hand.

As far as defense goes I'm not sure what kind of defense the Clip play or how disciplined they are but I know if you gave Rondo free rain to roam the court his steals average would soar. Rivers won't let that happen as a PG who gambles a lot will more often than not get burned.

Let's be clear, when Rondo won a ring, R Allen, P Pierce and K Garnett all outscored Rondo in the playoffs.

Not relevant at all in 2007 Rondo was a 2nd year player still learning the ropes and his playoffs minutes were much less.
Doc did not give him a chance that year.

Last year in the playoffs they get swept by Miami without Rondo. He played 43 minutes a game posting huge numbers. Should've/could've won if not for the Dwayne wade missed head chop call.

if/when rondo becomes a better scorer then he will be an unbelivable point guard.
when magic first came into the league, he was not a great shooter which limited
his penetration in the half court. once magic improved his outside shot and learned
how to score, he became the best point guard ever (apologies to oscar robertson
who certainly was the best of his era). rondo certainly has physical abilities
and there is history to support the possibility of him taking his game up a few notches.
