Wow, add this to list of bad contracts. BJ Upton, Mr. Hustle himself, get 5/$75.

Unreal. What an absolutely terrible deal this will end up being for ATL. Next year, he won't even hit .275. New league and his in ability to put the ball in play, plus losing 18 games in the friendly hitters parks of NYY and BOS.

I don't really see his numbers meriting that salary. He seems like a guy that plays a lot of games but hits in the .240's in recent years with minor power to hit 25 hr or so.

at 28 and for 5 years , you might just catch his peak years, but i think 10M is more like it.

I can't blame the players for signing these contracts.

I'm not very familiar with his playing style....don't see TB games much in CT.

He seems a bit like Granderson of the NYY. Pay is similar, both play CF, and hit like .245, but Grandy hits 40 HR and drives in a lot more runs.,,but he is older. Granderson is poor defensively , I don't know how Upton is.

I think you could sign Josh Hamilton for not too much more than 15m per season.

Maybe moving to the weaker league will help upton, but what numbers justify that pay ?

I guess he ( like Grandy) will never hit for average, so you need HR's and RBI

how about 30+ and 100+ to make it a win for the Braves ? I assume he plays good D

IF and a big IF, Upton could be an all-timer defensively. However, he doesn't hustle, can't bunt. Strikesout about 150+ times a year. Trust me this is a deal in 2 years the Braves are looking to move at the 2014 Trade deadline.

This is why the Braves have been good for so long, they didn't sign these types of players to huge deals. I would rather have Granderson, great guy and hits for power and hustles. Now think polar opposite including defense and you have BJ Upton.

Grandy strikes out a lot and really isn't a great outfielder....he breaks the wrong way on a lot of balls, but his speed saves him. He's a great baserunner and can steal a lot of bases. He'd rather score a run than drive one in. I'm sure he's a good teammate and gives back to the game/ city ! However if I ran the NYY he would ideally play LF with A healthy Gardner in CF and Ichiro in RF. Grandy isn't their best OF, Ichiro should have been in CF instead since Gardner was gone most of the season.

Never did like him as a player. Just can't hit and really never has.
