Make A Wish

When I did an internship at disney I had a lot of interaction with the volunteers in the organization and the children themselves. It's a great group.

?? I honestly didn't know "regular people" could grant wishes... I thought it was only celebrities and that kind of thing

Celebs grant wishes when the wish is meeting a certain celebrity. Said celebrity will step in and grant the wish. Like an athlete meeting a kid before the game and giving him courts side seats or whatever and maybe bringing him in the locker room, etc.

Regular people grant wishes by donating. Most wishes are much simpler than meeting a celebrity. Wanting to go to Disney World for example. Something like that would cost about $6 grand. They'll send you pics from the kid's trip of the kid and his family. And usually a letter or even a video of the kid or his parents talking about the trip and what it meant to them. Very moving.

Id grant one every week if I had the financial means to do it.

I 100% plan to one day.

First kids I ever met in the program was a group of about 15 blind children. They were the most awesome kids; kind, humble, thankful. Their wish was to go to Disney World. They spend that day just being kids, and I don't think they ever stopped smiling and laughing. I spent half the day with them and I was sold on Make a Wish for life.

Each year at Christmas, I give to the Epworths Children's Home in Columbia SC through the United Methodist Church. Since 1896, the Epworth Children's Home helps children who come from broken homes and provide education, counseling, medical needs and spiritual guidance. A very worthy cause for underpriviledged children, this orphanage can be reached at 2900 Millwood Avenue PO Box 50466 Columbia SC 29250 for anyone interested in making a Christmas donation that will make a child's holiday a little more joyous and their future a little more brighter.

Donors Choose is a pretty cool website, you donate to teachers in classrooms that need supplies and stuff. They will send you pictures and stuff so you can feel the difference. Funded some elementary school science class, they were all pumped up to do some experiments. http://www.donorschoose.org/

Vitanna is a similar website, but funds people's educations around the world. Takes some guy or gal that's trying to get a higher education in order to break the cycle of poverty and provide for their families better. The best part is, it's a loan, so once they finish classes and get a job they pay you back, and you can donate to others. I put $100 in there, and have had it returned many times over. http://www.vittana.org/

Last one is Pencils of Promise. Real small group that has grown from $25 to millions of dollars raised mostly from donations from school kids, spare change, etc. They work with 3rd world villages to build schools, but keep them involved with construction, teaching, etc so that the villages really have a vested interest in the success of their kids. http://www.pencilsofpromise.org/

All three of these I chose because #1 I can see exactly where my money is going and who it's helping rather than into a large organization like Red Cross, etc. #2 the people that this is helping are all trying their best already and just need a hand, not a freebie. #3 the world needs more education, you'd be surprised that people on this forum are actually well educated compared to most of the world. Change the next generation to hopefully be better than us.
