I get the hypheneated Smith-Jones stuff.

I could accept a woman keeping her name, and not taking my surname

but after you divorce, why keep the man's name ? My sister in law died yesterday, but kept the married name

I don't get getting a divorce from John ZZCWG ( Made up) and keeping his name....if you divorce the guy, why would live with his name ?

I see that quite a bit as well. The one I asked why she did that-she said she liked that name more than her surname.
I think that it's ridiculous. Regardless of the circumstances, it makes you look like you didn't get over him.

Doesn't it cost money to change your name?

Not to mention the fact that it's a huge hassle to change all your credit cards etc.

My ex-girlfriend kept her married name. Her daughter goes by that name of course.

She said it was too much of a hassle to change it.

My mom kept her married name just because she wanted to have the same last name as my sister and I.

I have a guy I went to highschool with and have as a "friend" on facebook and he just got married and now al the sudden he has a hyphened last name with her name coming second. WTF is that about??

It's not always divorced women with hyphenated last names , in the south (and i guess everywhere) it's somewhat common to see black people with hyphened last names. I know 2 , one guy's last name is Crenshaw-Hill and another Smoot-Lovejoy. ... and then there's the Alabama football player named HaHa Clinton-Dix.

It can't cost that much to legally change your name or simply revert to your maiden name. If I'm Donna Smith and I marry Richard Dick and become Donna Dick, then I divorce Richard because he's a dick in more ways than one, why would I keep that name ?

It's your name for the rest of your life, maybe worth a few hundred to change it ?

I don't see much correlation to a hyphenated surname and being black, female, divorced, southern or anything else.

Julia Louis-Dreyfuss from Seinfeld

Courtney Thorne-Smith actress.

I see that as two people that get married ( ?) have a kid, woman kept her maiden name, guy obviously keeps his name, so the kid gets this fucked up name.... say Richard Guerrera- Ochenkowski

Then lets say he marries a Laura Richitelli-Kruske and they have a daughter

does she become Barbara Richitelli-Kruske-Guerrera-Ochenkowski or something like that ?

Where does it end ? Is Does Barbara's kid have 8 surnames ?

Hyphenated names are stupid, but not a black thing

My family changed the name, probably back around the WW2 era, maybe earlier, it ended in kowski and was reduced to just 5 letters, my paternal grandmother kept the name, but everybody else changed to a made-up bullshit name. I never heard that discussed much, but it happened. Perhaps being Polish was frowned upon back then ? I know the Irish were discriminated against earlier.

I wasn't trying to make any correlation about it being a black thing. I was trying to show that it's not always about a divorce.

regarding keeping a surname after divorce... I dated a woman who had been married 4 times. The last guy committed suicide with a shotgun while they were separated. They hated each other at the time and she still speaks ill of him even after his death. Lo and behold, she kept his last name. Why? Because she "likes it". And so... When is it ever about a divorce ? the kid's name gets the hyphen after a divorce ? Maybe so, but that's news to me !

I believe the hyphen comes in when the bitch doesn't take the man's name and fucks things up. Both of my stepdaughters kept their maiden name which I won't post. It's an Italian name. let's say Catardi.

One marriage lasted about a year , Michelle kept the Catardi name instead of taking on say Palmeiri Now if they had a kid ( say me) I don't want to be Douglas Louis Catardi- Palmeiri or Palmeiri- Catardi or whatever. I'm not a Puerto rican ( nothing wrong with that) with a zillion names.

I'm Douglas Louis *****, that's it, and I rarely use the middle name ( my father's name) He had a fucked up middle name.... Cewe

I have a cousin with a fucked up first name. Loren for a man, too much like Laura.

how exactly do you shoot yourself with a shotgun or other rifle ? I can see a handgun.

seems to me you'd need to like anchor the shotgun in a vise type thing and rig up a pulley system of sorts to accomplish it.

....or cut the barrel down

If I wanted to commit suicide via a gun, I'd pick a handgun over a rifle. It's kind of impossible to shoot yourself with a rifle, except like in the foot.

maybe possible with a rifle, but awfully tough to get any torque on it to pull a trigger you might just reach, maybe if you had arms like Shaq ?

handguns are made for killing, ain;t no good for nothing else....Skynyrd

use the right tool ....Tim Allen

Sorry Doug , i was confused and out in left field. When i read the thread title and the first few posts i thought people were blaming (or crediting) divorced women as the reason for hyphened names , so i was just trying to show that in many cases they're not hyphened b/c of divorce. .... but clearly i misunderstood , so carry on.
