Knicks at Nets: What bettors need to know

New York Knicks at Brooklyn Nets (+1.5, 191)

The New York Knicks have a score to settle with the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night, and it couldn't come at a more opportune time with their city neighbors mired in a four-game slide. New York will make its second trip to the brand-new Barclays Center and is seeking to avenge a 96-89 overtime loss to Brooklyn before a boisterous crowd on Nov. 26. That game left the Knicks and Nets tied atop the Atlantic Division with 9-4 records, but the teams have gone in opposite directions since the end of November.

New York has won six of its last seven and is 4-1 this month while Brooklyn has followed up a five-game winning streak by going 0-4 in December to fall 3 1/2 games off the pace in the division. The skid includes three straight home losses for the Nets, who had won seven of their first eight at the Barclays Center. Even the two-game absence of Carmelo Anthony failed to slow the Knicks, who went into Miami and pounded the defending NBA champions by 20 points without their superstar forward.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT NEW YORK (15-5, 13-7 ATS): Anthony returned to the lineup to score 34 points against his former teammates as the Knicks outlasted Denver on Sunday to improve to 8-0 at Madison Square Garden. New York is the only team that has yet to lose at home and has its next six games at MSG following the matchup with Brooklyn. Knicks C Tyson Chandler, who leads the league in field goal percentage (70.9), has five double-doubles in his last six games and torched the Nets for 28 points (on 12-of-13 shooting) and 10 rebounds in their last matchup.

ABOUT BROOKLYN (11-8, 10-7-2 ATS): Leading scorer Brook Lopez (18.5 ppg) has sat out the past five games with a sprained right foot - during which Brooklyn went 1-4 - but the biggest issue of late has come at the defensive end. After not allowing an opponent to reach 90 points during a five-game winning streak, the Nets have surrendered an average of 106.2 points during the four-game skid. The 7-0 center practiced on Monday and has been listed as a game-time decision. Lopez had 22 points and 11 boards in the first meeting.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Knicks are 7-2-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings at the Nets.
* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings at the Nets.
* Road team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Nets (4-0) are the only Atlantic team with a perfect division record.

2. The Knicks, who average a league-best 11.9 3-pointers made, were only 6-for-21 in the first matchup.

3. New York has won six of the last eight meetings, including two of three last season.

THE GOLDSHEET

New York 97 - BROOKLYN 93—Quick turnaround from landmark Nov. 26
game at Barclays Center (which was a make-up game for season home opener
that was postponed due to the super storm Sandy), the first pro sports
matchups between Brooklyn and New York teams since the last time the
Dodgers and Giants played each other in 1957 before moving to California.
Brooklyn won first meeting by 7 when Knicks got a lot of scoring help from
Carmelo and Tyson Chandler (combined 63 points) but a puny 26 points from
everyone else. Avery Johnson’s Nets, however, will want to make sure they
have C Brook Lopez available after his recent foot injury, considering that the
big ex-Stanford frontliner scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed 11 boards
in that earlier win, which Brooklyn achieved despite subpar shooting from Gs
Joe Johnson & Deron Williams (combined 9 of 29 from floor). Not sure Knicks’
recent four-game win streak (thru Dec. 5 and achieved vs. mostly-lightweight
opposition) signals an extended uptick, but if Lopez is out or compromised, and
Carmelo is okay after last week’s finger injury, like New York’s chances for
revenge. 12-BRO +1' 96-89 (193-OT); 11-NY -6' 99-92 (196), Bro +9 100-92
(196), Ny -8 104-95 (193) CABLE TV—ESPN

LA Lakers 95 - CLEVELAND 94
—Not sure what to make of Lakers, still in
adjust mode to Mike D’Antoni’s new offensive concepts. But until triggerman
Steve Nash returns to active duty, expect gears to grind on attack end for Lake
Show, and Pau Gasol’s status (sore knee) the latest situation to monitor. Prior
to Friday vs. Ok City, L.A. hadn’t won two in a row SU since Bernie Bickerstaff
was serving as interim HC in mid-November, and defensive issues remain a
concern. Can Cleveland (still minus Kyrie Irving) take advantage? Lack of
offensive punch (Cavs 85 points or fewer in 4 of last 6 thru Dec. 5) makes Byron
Scott’s team a tough sell, although if Cavs at least have Syracuse rookie G Dion
Waiters (ankle) available, could make a better case for them against L.A. squad
that’s just 2-5 SU away thru Dec. 6. 11-LA -10' 97-92 (188)

DETROIT 98 - Denver 96—Let’s see if Detroit can atone for 109-97 loss at
Pepsi Center on Nov. 6, which came during first weeks of campaign when
Pistons were very slow out of gate. On the plus side for Detroit, Denver couldn’t
handle Greg Monroe (scored 27) in first meeting, and HC Lawrence Frank has
tightened the Piston defense considerably since the early weeks of the season.
Now, let’s see if Detroit can relocate some offense after scoring just 85 ppg in
four-game stretch thru Dec. 6. Nuggets wobbling a bit, having lost four in a row
SU on road and last four overall vs. number thru Dec. 5. 12-DEN -10 109-97
(199); 11-DEN -8' 116-115 (200)

NEW ORLEANS 89 - Washington 88
—At least the talk about challenging
Charlotte’s 7-win mark from last season has subdued a bit around D.C. after a
couple of recent Wizards’ wins, including a shocker at Verizon Center vs.
defending champ Miami on Dec. 4. But Washington in a far-from-healthy state,
with John Wall still sidelined and now defensive ace Trevor Ariza likely out for
a while with a strained calf (the sort of injury that doesn’t heal overnight). Now,
can we lay points with the future Pelicans, still probably minus Kentucky rookie
star Anthony Davis? That’s a tough call, with New Orleans scoring about 10 ppg
fewer with Davis sidelined than when he’s in the lineup. With New Orleans
struggling to score points and “under” its last four thru Dec. 5, perhaps that‘s a
better way to look. 11-Was +3’ 99-89 (194)

LA Clippers 90 - CHICAGO 84—Clippers had no trouble with Derrick Roseless
Chicago on Nov. 17 at Staples Center, romping by 21 when holding Bulls
to 33.7% FG shooting, while Blake Griffin ran roughshod (26 points and 10
boards) in paint. And L.A. now seems to be taking flight after a brief dip in form
following the first meeting vs. Bulls, as Clips have won and covered four in a row
thru Dec. 5, with return of vet G Chauncey Billups providing extra spark.
Chicago not quite the same with Luol Deng the first go-to option instead of Rose,
also perhaps contributing to its seven straight “unders” thru Dec. 6. 12-LA -6
101-80 (192); 11-Chi -1' 114-101 (192) CABLE TV—ESPN

Saint Joseph’s 78 - VILLANOVA 70—Nova’s 75-73 victory at totallyrebuilding
Vandy on Dec.1, snapping 3-game losing streak, is hardly a “buy
signal.” And we’ll toss St. Joe’s a mulligan for its 80-51 setback vs. riled-up
Creighton crew on Dec. 1. But we do expect the Hawks’ formidable G-duo of
Langston Galloway (12.8 ppg) & Carl Jones (15.5 ppg) to control the perimeter,
as they did in convincing 74-58 home series win LY, when they combined for 35
pts. & 10 assists. Big Five battles looking like a tall order for this year’s Nova
after last Wednesday’s humbling home loss vs. Temple. 11-SJU -3 74-58
CABLE TV—ESPN

NEVADA 64 - Cal Poly SLO 61—While we don’t mind taking ample points
with Nevada on the road thanks to their productive G combo of Deonte Burton
& Malik Story (combined 36 ppg), laying points has been a risk with the Wolf
Pack (1-5 as chalk), with coach David Carter getting no consistent scoring
production from his frontline. Cal Poly HC Joe Calero is expert at disguising
defenses and slowing the pace, and ex-Rice transfer F Chris Eversley (16.6
ppg) has emerged as legit go-to scorer for the Mustangs. 11-DNP

SAN JOSE ST. 73 - Santa Clara 68
—“Rivalry Series” resumes between
schools about 10 minutes apart on the Old Alameda in the South Bay. Santa
Clara risking becoming over-reliant on Gs Kevin Foster and Evan Roquemore
and their three pointers, as Kerry Keating’s squad has not been looking much
into the paint and 6-9 Canadian Marc Trasolini (scored only six in recent
shocking home loss vs. UCSB). Payback for the Spartans after last year’s
humiliation at the Leavey Center, and SJSU getting some needed production in
the post from 6-9 Santa Clara transfer Chris Cunningham (11.3 ppg) to
complement hot G James Kinney (23.4 ppg). 11-SCU -10' 84-58
