Both the victims' and bullies' parents need to be more involved in their childrens' lives. This shit makes me so sad, and I don't even like kids. It's all just so unnecessary. The story about the girl up in Canada who killed herself, after posting the youTube video with flashcards describing her struggles was awful too. Really sad stuff.

I wish people could laugh off the internet trolls and realize that they are the insecure and unhappy ones

Oh, I think they KNOW that they are insecure and unhappy - that's sort of the thing with depression, you know you're the one who's fucked... That's what makes it so hard to shake.

I'm 32, and don't even need to laugh off shit people say to me in real life (yet alone on the internet) - I just fight or move on, and most adults make the same choice at times of conflict. This story is about a teenage girl that didn't have the ability to do either - she just wasn't old enough, didn't have the mental tools, or support.

agreed.. i would put some of this issue on the parents themselves.. I know its hard to relate to a young teenager sometimes but that is part of a parents "job" in raising them..if they were more involved and present in their everyday lives then maybe this is something that would never have grown heavier on the kids mind...

Expanding on Murph's point, I think parents tend to forget how hard the teenage years are. You always hear parents say things like "you are a teenager, what do you have to worry about." I remember for myself, the teens were easily the hardest time in my life.

Bullying has always existed in society no matter how old you are. It affects even older people who may have a prick boss or some bad neighbors or gossipy church members. People need to be conditioned to cope with this type of behavior better. If somebody wants to kill themselves because a seemingly nobody in their lives ridicules them then they just as well would kill themselves over a break up, losing a job, getting a bad grade or something just as petty as spilling a glass of wine or something. Life isn't always easy and isn't as hard as some of us make it out to be. But to check yourself out is not the solution.

I know my kids have life pretty damn easy compared to what I had. I tell them simply their job right now is to bring home good grades and that's it. They have no other job in the world then to go to school, pay attention and work hard to get good grades. They can sleep in until 10 on the weekends, shoot hoops with me at the gym, go swimming in the pool if they want but bad grades are unsatisfactory. Sounds like a good deal.

JustinCruise your start date needs to get moved up ASAP, you are absurd.

actually other people on this thread are agreeing with my statements, so what the hell are you talking about. My advice to you is that if you don't have a comment related to the topic at hand, which is a serious one, do us all a favor and stay out of it.

You sound like a great parent but even kids of great parents hide stuff, so nobody should can be 100% sure their kids have it as easy as you might think unless you're with them 24/7 which depending on their age might be impossible.

A cute little button nose on your daughter might be getting them called monkey nose by the other kids on the block and the fact they know how much you love it it makes it too much to share with you and without that outlet of help they let the abuse continue while both afraid to challenge the bully and embarrassed to tell a parent and something so crazy like that has kids hanging from their rafters.

Even the best parents see their kids having the best time with THEM they have to remember to ask if everything going on when they aren't around is also alright even though it seems like a no brainer......After having a great time with my kids I find time to be serious for a second and ask about life outside of 'us' just to be sure.

If Choptalk checks in, no I don't have a monkey nose....

Oh I know and we realize that. We ask our boys a lot what's going on at school and if there is any bullying taking place and this and that. Realize they may not always be truthful but we ask the right questions.

The problem is school's provide Guidance Counselors/ Service Workers to help the kids.

It doesn't help, if they don't want to tell their parents their problems odds say the don't want to tell an unfamiliar grown up their problems. Peer mentoring needs to be incorporated into schools more.

Kids need to be able to relate to the person if they are going to feel comfortable going to talk to them.

I always thought that it'd be a great job, but too much educational/political BS involved with getting those jobs.
