Ryan Freel, who played for five MLB teams between 2001 and 2009, has committed suicide at age 36, according to multiple reports.

TRAGIC SPORTS DEATHS
Remembering the many athletes sports lost way too soon.
Sgt. Mike Paul of the Jacksonville (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office confirmed to The Florida Times-Union that Freel, a Jacksonville native, was found dead from a self-inflicted shotgun wound Saturday at his home around 4 p.m. local time.

Paul confirmed to the newspaper that authorities were treating the death as a suicide.

Freel, a utilityman who played outfield, second base and third base, spent most of his MLB career (six seasons) with the Cincinnati Reds. He also played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Royals. He was drafted by the Blue Jays in 10th round of the 1995 draft. He stole over 35 bases in three straight seasons with the Reds from 2004-06.

The guy really wasn't very good, thus the utilityman role, he still made 10M in his career.

That's plenty to be set for life .

Probably blew the money, IDIOT !

When guys that young kill themselves, usually the cause is a woman or money. I googled his name a couple times with the word gambling, but I didn't see any hits. I'm gonna guess this guy was tough enough not to let a woman drive him to do it... which leaves money. I will make an off the wall prediction that in the next few days or weeks we will hear about gambling debt. (not so off the wall beings that this is a gambling forum)

I doubt he offed himself because his career failed and he was out of the game, guy was a just a marginal extra-piece bench player.

unlikely he had health issues and was terminally ill....a good reason to off yourself !

10M is likely on the order of what a doctor makes in a career , with just a bit of planning a minor caliber jock can easily live very well on that 10M for life. Freel got his money in a few years as well, so it's worth more than a doctor's future earnings. I think 300k might be about right or even a tad high for an average dr. , multiply by 40 years and = 12M.....but the ballplayer got his money upfront, or within a few years.

Probably tough not to spend like crazy when you're kind of the lowest paid veteran on the team...I'd say Fuck -it to any teammate pressuring me into spending.

The guy had to know he wasn't ever getting that 75M contract and was a utility player.

I think you are right that it wasn't financial....guy seemed to have plenty of that I am sure. More than likely it was probably a mental issue or something personal we don't know about in his life...

You mis-read me, Murphy !

I say it is financial !

He likely blew his meager pay ( by MLB standards) seeing how his teammates lived

I'm sure all of us guys here would be set for life on 10 M, seriosly because we at least have some concept of money management

10 M in a lump might not be enough to live in SF, or NYC- Manhattan.... for life ( if younger)

You gotta like a Viejo Dinosaur.....I doubt he made 10M in a few years sitting on a bench in Cincy, but he retired on far less than this idiot and lives it up like a king !

but it sure the fuck is enough in cheaper us areas like LV, Az, most of the SE USA....and foreign possibilities.

In another article that subject was brought up because he had like 8-9 over the course of his career thanks to collisions in the outfield with teammates and/or outfield walls/fences.

Freel could play. He was known to play the game with passion. He played hard nosed and I can remember him being carted off the field after a head shot playing for the Reds. Who knows why he took his own life. I think its kinda ignorant for some of you to judge the man without having not known him or his demons.
