Where do you draw the line when it comes to attending a funeral?

I have not been to many as I am only 29 years old, but wanted to hear from some of the older guys that have experienced more death amongst their pool of friends. What is the etiquette?

I've been thinking of the subject as I am going to be attending one tomorrow for a high school friend that was murdered in an apparent robbery on Christmas Eve. I had not talked to him in at least 1 year, and have only seen him maybe 5 times in the last 5 years. He was not a friend I would pick up the phone and talk to on the regular. When I was 16-21 y/o I would see fairly regularly because we had lots of mutual friends. He moved to Florida when I was 21, and had not seen him many times since. He had just moved back to the area in December. He is someone I would not invite to my wedding.

I guess there is no right or wrong answer, but would like to hear the opinions.

I don't have a right answer to this... but in your situation, I think you are being there for your group of friends is probably more important than being there for you or him... sorry tohear that even if you're not close...

You go to funerals for the living, not the dead. I don't really see the point of going to one if you don't know anybody there.

same for a wedding, and why I'll decline my most recent invite to one !

In this particular case, I would go since you will know many people there.

Where you invited in particular, or by announcement ?

Who invited you ?

I'd consider going ...mainly because the people there would be your old friends ?

Would he go to your funeral? If not, then don't go.

If I had my way.... my funeral would be an awesome party, worthy of Jeff Spicoli's Birthday party !

It would be mandatory ultra casual attire with kegs of beer (outdoors,,,,if summer), and I'd love the Rolling stones to play

a tribute band would be more like it !

I like the cats and dogs and other perhaps homeless critters , far better than the humans that abandon them !

Take a ferret, it's a lifetime pet....of course the same for cat, dog, Iguana , etc !

My indoor cat is close to 9 years old, 15 is realistic, IMO !

I say if you feel like the man deserves your respects, then go. If not, dont go

A funeral is either about saying good bye or giving support to those left behind. Sounds like you don't need to say goodbye. So ask yourself if any of the surviving family or friends would be comforted with your appearance. If you can help someone you care about by attending, then go.

And finally... If nobody benefits from your attendance, and you don't need to say goodbye... think of it as an opportunity to see people you might want or need to see. You go and hang with them for your own purposes.. And if that isn't appealing.. stay home

There will certainly be some funeral crashers there with this group of characters. His old man is putting on an open bar at the country club afterwards. I plan on being in attendance tomorrow. The guy deserves my respects and I want to be there for my friends that were close with him.
