Can someone tell me why the clock stops when the QB is sacked in the NFL?

Two straight sacks in the SF/Arizona game and they stopped the clock for about :10 then start it again. Clock should always continue to run.

Why is that?

To spot the ball. Then the clock starts.

Unless its last 2 min of game and it keeps going...

I guess we could also ask how come spiking the ball is not intentional grounding?

That is flawed. When a WR catches the ball for a 1st down the clock doesn't stop. It runs continuously.

Or how come the ball isn't marked down when the ball is snapped back to the holder who has his knee down on a FG or XP.

I didn't say its a great answer but I would assume in the normal flow of a game when there is a sack they need to let the offensive team know the down and distance.

I figured in the 2 min warning time they do not want to give the offense any reward for getting sacked.

What is the penalty for Intentional Grounding? the place is placed where the QB would have be sacked before throwing it away. Essentially no penalty for getting rid of it. Why not mark back 5 yds from where the QB threw it?

WTf, if they stopped it every play that would make the game 16 hours. no 1 has that time...

In the NFL you are not down when your knee is down.

To answer your first question its so the deep receivers will have time to return to the huddle without getting a delay of game penalty.

You cant have intentional grounding unless there is pressure from the defense.

You have to have pressure from the D in order to constitute intentional grounding.
