*Alabama 27 - Notre Dame 12—Wake up the echoes indeed! Only the mostdeluded
of Notre Dame backers were dreaming of the BCS prior to a season in
which HC Brian Kelly’s Irish dodged more bullets than James Bond in Skyfall to
somehow find themselves as the last unbeaten standing and in the title game at
Miami. Despite the many close calls, we hardly begrudge the Domers, who
deserve their place in the finale after running the gauntlet and winning at such
treacherous venues aS Oklahoma and Southern Cal (albeit the Trojans were
playing minus QB Matt Barkley), results that would have seemed highly unlikely
in the summer.
But can the Irish stay close to Alabama?
Admittedly, there is a knee-jerk reaction to past SEC prowess that could
distort perceptions in the favor of the Crimson Tide. After all, SEC reps have
won the last six BCS title games; the only conference loser in these BCS/Bowl
Alliance championships since they began in the mid ‘90s has been LSU, which
fell to the Tide a year ago in New Orleans. But several regional sources have
wondered if Bama might be a step down from last year’s BCS winner, a
reasonable assumption considering much of the Tide’s defense from last year is
now in the NFL. Bama also stared into the abyss on three occasions this
season, pulling wins out of “the hat” vs. LSU and Georgia (in the SEC title game),
but stumbling vs. Johnny Football and Texas A&M.
Yet fundamental considerations make it easier for us to support the Crimson
Tide. It can be forcefully argued that Bama has been in against tougher than
Notre Dame, especially considering its SEC duties including wins at Baton
Rouge and in Georgia’s backyard of Atlanta. For a while, mistake-free QB A.J.
McCarron (only 3 picks) was generating Heisman talk; his penchant for avoiding
mistakes threatens to minimize the big-play element of the LB Manti Te’o-led
Notre Dame defense. Arguably the best OL in the country manhandled several
capable foes (such as Michigan in the opener and Georgia in the SEC title game,
when slashing Tide RBs gained 350 YR). Bama also has a pair of 1000-yard
rushers (“thunder” Eddie Lacy at 1182 YR and “lightning” frosh T.Y. Yeldon at an
even 1000 YR; both gain better than 6.5 ypc). We’re betting that the Tide much
improves upon the 92 ypg on the ground (ranking 4th in the nation) that Notre Dame’s
frenzied defense allowed this season. Frosh WR Amari Cooper has also emerged
as a feared deep-ball threat, as Georgia discovered in the SEC title clash.
Meanwhile, despite its 12-0 SU mark, the Irish were hardly a smoothrunning
machine offensively. Skittery soph QB Everett Golson provided more
electricity at the position for ND than recent seasons. But he also didn’t finish a
handful of games due to injury and ineffectiveness when relieved by backup and
former starter Tommy Rees. And Golson was barely on the field vs. two of the
toughest defenses (Michigan’s and BYU’s, missing the latter game entirely) the
Irish faced in 2012. While ND made a point to get more touches for breakaway
threats Theo Riddick and George Atkinson, the attack often had a pedestrian
look; the Irish tallied only 13 vs. Michigan, 17 vs. BYU, and 23 in regulation time
vs. Stanford. And even if Nick Saban’s Tide “D” is down a notch from last
season’s platoon that blanked LSU in the title game, it’s a small notch; Bama still
led the nation in rush defense (79 ypg) and total defense (246 ypg). Saban is
also a master at disguising defensive looks and coverages, which could disrupt
a still-learning QB such as Golson, playing in only his 11th game. For what it’s
worth, the Irish also never faced “SEC speed” this season.
Finally, mention of Saban recalls his pedigree, which includes wins and
covers in three previous BCS title games. We expect Notre Dame grimly hangs
around for a while. But with the Tide (also ranked 13th in TO margin) unlikely to
hurt itself, its eventual manpower edges likely wear down the Irish. Then we
await for the next act in the Tuscaloosa drama...if there is any truth to the Sabanto-
the-Cleveland Browns rumor. Stay tuned.

★★★CHICAGO 99 - Cleveland 80—What does Chicago need to break
out of its indifferent form (besides Derrick Rose returning to active duty?)?
Simply, serve up the Cavaliers, who have been feasted upon by the Bulls,
reflected in thumping wins and covers in all meetings the past two seasons,
each decided by DD margins, most by significant DD margins. Chicago win
margin was 31 ppg in the three meetings last season, and to prove that was no
fluke, the Bulls blew out Cavs by 29 at “The Q” back on Nov. 2 and followed up
with an easy 10-point win at the same venue on Dec. 5. Tom Thibodeau’s
defensive schemes continue to flummox Cleveland, shooting a combined 38%
from floor in the first two meetings. Cavs were minus Kyrie Irving for the second
meeting on Dec. 5, but they could be shorthanded again for this one if C
Anderson Varejao hasn’t returned from knee contusion that has sidelined him
since mid-December.

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Sun Life Stadium • Miami Gardens, FL
Alabama over Notre Dame by 3

Here’s how big this game is: the last time these two fought for the National
Championship was in the 1973 Sugar Bowl, in their fi rst meeting ever,
when Notre Dame hung on for a 24-23 win over Alabama. “It was the
North against the South, Bear Bryant against Ara Parseghian, the Baptists
against the Catholics,” said Notre Dame head coach Parseghian. “It had
all these compelling comparisons. And it was played on New Year’s Eve,
not New Year’s Day, so we had the national stage to ourselves.” Bryant
called it “the biggest game in the South’s history.” From the broadcast
booth Howard Cosell went on to say, “This is the dream matchup: Notre
Dame-Alabama. At Notre Dame, football is a religion. At Alabama, it is
a way of life.” That 1973 game had a 25.3 Nielsen television rating; by
comparison, the rating for last season’s BCS championship game pitting
Alabama against LSU was 14.0! So, as befi tting a true heavyweight title
bout, let’s take a close look at both contestants. We’re all familiar with
the Tide’s physically punishing defense under Nick Saban, holding 20 of
their last 29 foes to season-low yards and fi nishing this year ranked No.
2 in PPG allowed (11). Offensively, A.J. McCarron, the only Alabama QB
to appear in two National Championship games, ended the season No. 1
in pass effi ciency with a 173.08 rating. The Nictator himself has enjoyed
great success as chalk in big games, going 17-3 SU and 13-7 ATS against
undefeated foes, and Saban also owns a perfect 3-0 SUATS mark versus
the Irish (all SU underdog wins). But that’s where the good stuff ends if
you’re a Tide fan. Favorites of 4 or more points in the same bowl game
as last year who are not off a win of 15 or more points have gone an
atrocious 4-20 ATS in their repeat appearance, and the dog in AP No. 1
vs. 2 matchups stands 20-8-1 ATS (8-8 in bowl games). More disturbing,
perhaps, is the fact that Alabama’s stats slipped -42 net YPG during the
2nd half of this season while the Dame’s improved +33 net YPG over the
same span. We’re well aware of ND’s pitiful 2-10 SU and 3-9 ATS record as
bowlers since 1995 but that losing culture is on its way out under current
head coach Brian Kelly (1-1 SUATS in two bowls with the Irish). Nothing
wrong either with Kelly’s record when taking on a formidable opponent
as he’s 21-10 SU and 20-10-1 ATS against .750 or greater foes, plus he’s a
profi table 23-10-2 ATS in his career as an underdog. Money line players
should rejoice with this nugget from our well-oiled machine: bowl dogs
of 7 or more points with a win percentage of .923 or more who allow
14.7 or less PPG on the season are 7-0 ATS since 1980 – winning every
game STRAIGHT UP. Oh, yeah… the No. 1 college defense this year
in points allowed? Notre Dame’s, giving up just 10 PPG. With the Irish
heading to Miami on an 8-0 SU run versus winning team this season, we
would dearly love to pull the trigger and shoot for the outright upset.
But considering Saban’s been-there-done-that pedigree and the fact
that defending champions are 8-5 SUATS versus undefeated bowlers, we
won’t get greedy. Instead, be content to count your winnings after the
Fighting Irish – with a little luck, of course – grab the green in this tightly
contested thriller.

(269) ALABAMA (SU: 12-1, ATS: 6-7) vs. (270) NOTRE DAME (SU: 12-0, ATS: 7-5)
Alabama seeks its third national championship in four years
when it faces the lone unbeaten team in the country in Notre
Dame. These are the top-two scoring defenses in FBS with
the Irish allowing 10.3 PPG and the Tide giving up 10.7 PPG.
Alabama leads the country in total defense (246 YPG), while
Notre Dame ranks sixth (287 YPG). Neither team has been a
great wager, with the Crimson Tide going 1-4 ATS in its past
five games and the Irish at 3-4 ATS in its past seven contests.
But both were strong bets in non-home games, with Alabama
posting a 4-2 ATS mark and Notre Dame at 5-1 ATS.

Play Over - All teams where total
is between 35.5 and 42 points
(ALA, ND) - after covering spread
in 2 of last 3 games, with winning
team vs. another winning team.
• The situation’s record is
34-10 over the last 5 seasons
(77.3%, +23 units).

3* Notre Dame +10 or better
This number may rise, so keep an eye on it. We're satisfied with +10 and will grade it at that number, but watch the board. Every half point helps.

BCS Championship Game: What Bettors Need to Know

Alabama vs. Notre Dame (9.5, 40.5)

When: 8:30 PM ET, Monday, January 7, 2013
Where: Sun Life Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME STORYLINES

1. Two of the most storied programs in college football history will square off for the national championship when undefeated and top-ranked Notre Dame collides with No. 2 and reigning champion Alabama on Jan. 7 at Miami's Sun Life Stadium. Despite its unrivaled tradition, Notre Dame has not won a national title since 1988 and has not been atop the rankings since 1993. Alabama, meanwhile, will be chasing its third national championship in the past four years under Nick Saban, who has restored the luster to one of the few programs that can stand up to Notre Dame's legacy. The teams have met six times, with the Fighting Irish winning five.

2. Notre Dame entered the season as an afterthought but slowly climbed up the rankings behind a bruising defense - led by standout linebacker Manti Te'o - that smothered one opponent after another. The Fighting Irish allowed a nation-low 10.3 points per game and withstood a number of close calls as its offense continued to evolve. Notre Dame's formula was similar to the one that brought two championships to Alabama and third-year coach Brian Kelly readily admits he used the Crimson Tide's style of play as a blueprint to get the Irish back into the national picture.

3. There's something to be said for been there, done that, and Alabama's recent experience on the biggest stage cannot be overlook. Never was that more apparent than in last season's BCS championship game, when the Crimson Tide avenged their only regular season loss with a dominating defensive effort in a 21-0 victory over LSU. And while Notre Dame always plays a schedule dotted with top programs, Alabama is part of college football's best conference in the SEC, which, by the way, has won all six BCS title games since its inception in 2006.

4. The Fighting Irish have been utilizing the no-respect card as a motivator throughout the season, and the oddsmakers provided them with more fuel by installing the one-loss Crimson Tide as a 10-point favorite. Notre Dame played perhaps its best game in a 30-13 rout at Oklahoma on Oct. 27 - another contest in which it was a huge underdog and the consensus was that the Irish could not compete.

5. Few would argue that Kelly has done the best coaching job in the country this season in compiling his second 12-0 regular season in four years (the previous one was at Cincinnati in 2009). But Saban is looked upon as a modern-day Bear Bryant in Tuscaloosa, not only winning two national titles with Alabama but claiming one at LSU in 2003. There have been whispers that Saban could be NFL-bound after the season, but he has steadfastly denied the rumors.

TV: 8:30 p.m., ESPN.

LINE: Alabama -9.5, O/U 40.5. Sharp money hit Alabama early at +7.5, +8, and +8.5, pushing the current line value to 9.5, according to BetDSI.eu. The current situation and expectation is the public will be somewhat split on this game as it heads towards kick off. Sharp money is also backing the under at the 41 and 41.5 values. The total has a 2-to-1 money wagered lean on the under and the line is currently sitting at the 40.5 value.

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the mid-70s with partly cloudy skies. Winds will blow out of the ENE at 8 mph.

TRENDS:

* Crimson Tide are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
* Fighting Irish are 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
* Over is 5-1 in Crimson Tide’s last six bowl games.
* Under is 20-5-1 in Fighting Irish’s last 26 games on grass.

ABOUT ALABAMA (12-1, 7-1 SEC): The Crimson Tide will be happy to match muscle vs. muscle with Notre Dame's defense behind a powerhouse offensive line that averages 315 pounds per man. Alabama has a pair of 1,000-yard backs in junior Eddie Lacy and freshman T.J. Yeldon, who combined for 27 touchdowns and piled up 334 yards in the SEC title game win over Georgia. Quarterback AJ McCarron threw for 26 touchdowns against only three interceptions and showed he was much more than a caretaker of the offense by leading late drives to beat LSU and Georgia. His top weapon is Amari Cooper, who has 53 receptions and nine touchdowns. Notre Dame's defense has been getting all the publicity, but the Crimson Tide have their own elite linebacker in C.J. Mosley and held 10 opponents to less than 14 points while recording four shutouts.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (12-0): Te'o, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, is the heart and soul of a defense that permitted only nine touchdowns overall and two on the ground. He has seven interceptions and played behind a stellar defensive front featuring ends Stephon Tuitt (12 sacks) and Kapron Lewis-Moore sandwiching the massive Louis Nix III. Notre Dame's running back corps of Theo Riddick, Cierre Wood and George Atkinson III combined for 2,000 yards and will test a defense that allowed a national-low 246 yards. Still, Notre Dame's offense revolves around dual-threat quarterback Everett Golson. He threw for 11 touchdowns against five interceptions and had four of of his five-highest passing totals in November. Golson also rushed for 305 yards and five scores and his ability to keep the chains moving against Alabama's defense will be vital.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Alabama Crimson Tide
Point Spread - Pick

No. 1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (12-0 SU, 7-5 ATS) vs. No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide (12-1 SU, 6-7 ATS)
College Football BCS National Championship
Date/Time: Monday January 7th, 2013. 8:30PM Eastern
Where: Sun Life Stadium Miami Gardens, F.L.
TV: ESPN
by Jay, Football Handicapper.

Point Spread: ND +10/ALA -10
Over/Under Total: 42

It's hard to ignore the fact that the SEC will seek their 7th straight National Championship this January. It's possibly even harder to ignore the fact that Nick Saban has built a modern day dynasty down in Tuscaloosa echoing the accomplishments of Bear Bryant nearly a half of century ago. Yet the Alabama Crimson Tide will make their 3rd BCS National Championship Game appearance in the last 4 years when they meet the Notre Dame Fighting Irish inside Sun Life Stadium on January 7th. For Alabama, the Crimson Tide will not only have the chance to become the first team in the BCS era to win back to back National Championships but they could also extend the SEC's reign of dominance to 7 straight years.

While Alabama looks to add to their legacy and tradition, Notre Dame will try to recapture theirs. There was a time when Notre Dame was the most dominant program in college football each and every year. Coach Lou Holtz helped restore that dominance with the Irish's last National Championship in 1988. However, it has been a rather long and frustrating 25 years since that last National Championship. Coach Brian Kelly has helped restore the winning tradition in South Benn by leading the Irish to an impressive 12-0 mark as the only remaining unbeaten team in college football. The Irish were not expected to be a national contender this season but have found ways to pull out the close wins to stay undefeated. The luck of the Irish has been apparent several times this season with 5 wins by less than a touchdown including two overtime victories. The big question now is can the luck of the Irish withstand one more game to recapture glory?

The SEC's formula to success over the last 6 National Championships can be accredited mainly towards strong defense and being able to run the football. Ironically, Notre Dame has mirrored that formula this season with the 6th best defense in the country and averaging over 200 yards per game running the football. The Irish has played old school style football, which like their uniforms, has been unchanged throughout time. Notre Dame has been able to win in the trenches this season and possess physical toughness on both sides of the football like few other teams around the country. Now the Irish gets the chance to test their strength against the big bad bully from the SEC in Alabama.

Alabama is the ultimate physical football team. The Crimson Tide defense ranks 1st overall allowing just 246 yards per game and 1st against the run allowing 76 yards per game. Additionally, Alabama is tremendous in the running game with an extremely talented offensive front averaging 224 yards per game on the ground. Many would argue that no other team in the country can match Alabama's strength and size on either side of the football. However, Alabama backers have to be concerned about the Crimson Tide's performance during the latter part of the season. Alabama was outplayed against LSU, defeated by Texas A&M, and just narrowly escaped an upset against Georgia in the SEC Championship Game 32-28. Georgia was able to move the football surprisingly well through the air which exposed Alabama's weakness in their secondary which will be a concern against the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame's strength is running the football with tailbacks Theo Riddick and Cierre Wood. Both tailbacks have combined for more than 1,600 rushing yards with 9 touchdowns. There is little doubt that the Fighting Irish will attempt to establish a ground presence against Alabama. However, I believe the Fighting Irish offense will have to hit a few big passing plays to rattle Alabama just like Georgia was able to do. Notre Dame QB Everette Golson has the playmakers in the receiving core to make the passing game effective. Still, Golson's arm has been a concern at times this season completing just 58.9% passing on the year with 11 scores and 5 picks. Notre Dame's defense has been the backbone of the team all year and should keep them competitive against Alabama. However, Golson's arm could be the true difference maker to help the Fighting Irish offense hit some plays down the field to keep Alabama's defense off balance.

On the other side of the ball, I mentioned that Notre Dame has one of most solid defenses in the country. However, it is hard to ignore how dominant Alabama was running the football against Georgia in that SEC Championship Game. The Crimson Tide offensive line dominated up front creating big holes for running backs Eddie Lacy and T.J Yeldon. As a team, Alabama rushed for 350 yards in the SEC Championship. Tailback Eddie Lacy was the game MVP with 181 rushing yards and Yeldon added 153 rushing yards. It was the same formula Alabama has used for the last 4 years over their dominating run in the SEC by using their big offensive line and wearing down defenses. Of course it does not hurt when you have tailbacks like Lacy and Yeldon who have combined for 2,182 yards with 27 touchdowns. Therefore it will be very interesting to see if Alabama can get that same type of edge up front against Notre Dame's defense and control tempo with their running game. QB A.J McCarron has not been impressive under pressure this season and Alabama lost WR Kenny Bell for the season. As a result, the key match-up of this game will be Alabama's offensive line against Notre Dame's defensive front. If Alabama is not able to run the football, Notre Dame could possibly pull off the big upset.

Jay's Pick to Cover the Point Spread: This year's BCS National Championship Game will feature two of the greatest programs in college football history with 39 combined National Championships between both schools. However, only one team will add to that legacy. Alabama has the edge on each side of the ball despite Notre Dame's gritty defense.I think this game will be an epic battle in the trenches highlighted by both defenses. I expect scoring to stay low and the Irish to stay within one score.
Ultimately, Alabama pulls out the win in a close 23-17 victory!
