Working for yourself had it's positives and has it drawbacks. Personally I'd prefer to work to myself.

Just curious who owns their own business here?

If you care to expand, great.

I own a plastering business just Southeast of Pittsburgh. Wouldn't ever want to work for someone else again.

I have done it twice. In my early 20's I started a carpet cleaning business. That was a very hard cut throat business. I enjoyed it. Did a lot of work in detroit. It was better back then. I was way to young and way under funded to o it the right way. I was wanting to start something on my own and that was realy the cheapest business I could start up on the cheap.

The biggest problem I had was I would not do anything stops after 2pm so i could go to the loacal track. LOL
Taxes are also a huge pain in the ass. Keeping very very good records and logging all incoming and outgoing monies.

the 2nd time was starting my own rehab business. That was a nice way to make money doing work on rental properties. I have the skills to do most interior work and already had the tools for the job.

Starting that business has led me to the job I have now of inspecting houses.

Good:
freedom
open schedule
Success is up to you

Bad
too much freedom
taxes
competition undercutting you every week.
Waiting to get paid.

What type of business are you looking to get in?
Do you need a building to do it?
What type of insurance do you need?
How many employess will this business need?
What kind of way do you plan on getting people to do business with you?
Do you have a wife that works that you can have benefits with? (this is huge)
Do you have a wife that is behind you?
Are you well funded to not ake any money for 6 months?

I am also looking at getting in on the food truck business. What a cheap way to start up a business. New trucks for 55k. I already have a local eatery that loves the idea so I would be like a franchise in a way using his great food

I was thinking about that the other day. I have owned a few businesses over the years, mostly with partners ( a bar and a carwash and a very small landscaping company). What I was thinking about though is that since I was 18, I have only received 1099's. Not one single w2, ever. Just seemed weird to me when I started talking to a buddy of mine who has never gotten a 1099.

I have for the past 3 years. I could never, ever go back to a 40 hour a week punch in punch out, 30 min lunch, have to put in PTO, etc etc. I always remember when I worked in finance and had that terrible feeling about going into work after a long vacation. Don't get me wrong, it's not easy and it adds a whole new level of stress, but when things go good you reap the rewards. When they go bad you work your ass off to fix them, but at the end of the day there is only one person to point the finger at and I like that.

Anyone Hiring? Haha

I was just curious, I find that running your own business seems to be more satisfactory.
However I wouldn't mind working for someone who was a good business owner.

I have a feeling that there are a lot of skilled tradesmen here at TheRx.... call it instinct..
