Some of America's biggest restaurant chains have lost more than 50% of their sales over the past decade as they closed hundreds of locations.
Many of these businesses failed to update their brands or menu options, making them vulnerable to a new generation of eateries.

Based on data provided by Technomic, a consulting firm for the food-service industry, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 restaurant chains with the biggest declines in both locations and sales between 2001 and 2011.

The struggling brands "tend to be older," says Darren Tristano, executive vice president of Technomic. The type of cuisine sometimes plays a key role, Tristano says. In the case of barbecue establishments, for instance, competition is less of a problem than the limited menu options. Barbecue fare typically attracts male customers, and it isn't a meal diners want to eat every day.

Many of these restaurants saw their heydays come and go decades ago. Of the 10 chains with the biggest declines, eight have filed for bankruptcy in the past decade.

The tepid recovery from the recent recession will make recovery a huge challenge for these brands.
Click through this slide show, published Jan. 2, for a closer look at 10 restaurant chains that had 60% or greater declines in the number of store locations over the past decade.

moving along................ Ha

Blimpie was a Great place to get a quick sandwich back in the 70's .... Meat was cut fresh, and the oil and vinegar was a great added touch.

Never ate at Ponderosa Steakhouse for Steaks... But after Softball games on a saturday or Sunday Morning... The team use to go there for their Breakfast buffet.

Frisches Big Boy is a classic.. damn.. they basically have a big mac like sandwich but it has tarter sauce as the dressing instead of the thousand island mac sauce.. wow puff_>>

Also 3 of those other ones closed up round where I am in the past year.. sheezus these restaurants all had some good stuff.. Ponderosa used to be great ..awesome wings on the buffet.. get all the items on a buffet but then u can get a steak!.. but now the unlimited steak at places like Golden Corral pretty much put that restaurant to bed.

You mean ground round isn't out of business.

still around here on Long Island, but agree there are less now

They exist in Ct but closed all the ones near me, I liked them for breakfast once in awhile, Denny's is the only other real option left or overpay at a small place....I just cook it myself now.

I've only eaten at one of these, Blimpie. Some I've never heard of.
