More than two dozen alleged mobsters associated with three of New York's five organized crime families were rounded up by the FBI Wednesday morning in connection with an ongoing investigation, NBC 4 New York has learned.

The arrests are based on indictments charging extortion and other federal crimes relating to the private garbage-hauling industry, law enforcement sources said.

The suspects are being transported to the FBI office in Lower Manhattan for processing and will appear in federal court later Wednesday.

The U.S. Attorney's office is expected to release a statement outlining the investigation and specific charges.

The names of those arrested have not been made public yet.

(Reuters) - Dozens of organized crime figures from the New York area were arrested Wednesday following an investigation of extortion of local garbage haulers, a federal official said.
More than 30 suspects in New York and New Jersey were taken into custody, said J. Peter Donald, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation's New York office.
Many of those arrested are suspected members of several of New York's five organized crime families, a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation said.
The investigation focused on extortion and loan sharking schemes targeting private New York-area garbage haulers, the official said.
The New York Post, which first reported the arrests, said they began at around 5:00 a.m. EST (1000 GMT).
At least nine suspects were arrested in New York City, and the rest in suburban Westchester and Rockland counties and in New Jersey, a second official said.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in Manhattan federal court Wednesday afternoon.

Maybe the judge will give them a free pass if they do 300 hours community service to clean up after the hurricane.

Doesn't seem like any high ranking members from any of the 3 families hit were included , could also be some fallout from Nicky Skins tapes here as well. will be interesting to see if this leads to anything the feds can use against new Gambino boss Cefalu or Lucchese boss Crea
