WINNING POINTS

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Saturday, January 19

North Carolina* over Maryland by 9
Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon has been playing circus clown, juggling the lineup even though ACC season has begun.
NORTH CAROLINA, 74-65.

Pittsburgh* over Connecticut by 4
St. John’s over DePaul by 5
Towson* over James Madison by 6
Memphis* over Harvard by 12

Penn State* over Nebraska by 7
Recent headline: ‘Miles’ options limited after injuries to Ubel, Peltz.’ They were limited before Nebraska injuries arrived. Said the coach, “We’re going to have to get some
guys on the floor who haven’t shown the consistency to deserve to be on the floor.”
Oh, that always works out well, doesn’t it?
PENN STATE, 64-57.

Temple* over St. Bonaventure by 13
Vanderbilt* over South Carolina by 10

Mississippi* over Arkansas by 20
Arkansas was 1-7 SU in SEC road games last season and has yet to win away from Bud
Walton arena this season. So, good luck to all prospective Razorbacks road-dog backers against a home side averaging 83 ppg this season.
MISSISSIPPI, 82-62.

Iowa State over TCU* by 6
Oklahoma State* over Texas Tech by 25

Florida* over Missouri by 5
Missouri likes to play in the open floor, so maybe they won’t stink it up on the road
like they often do.
FLORIDA, 82-77.

Virginia Tech* over Wake Forest by 2
Delaware* over Northeastern by 1
Xavier* over Lasalle by 5
Kansas over Texas* by 1
Purdue* over West Virginia by 1
William & Mary* over Drexel by 1
Tulsa over Tulane* by 6
Bradley* over Missouri State by 4
Wisconsin-GB* over Cleveland State by 9
Eastern Michigan* over Miami-OH by 3

Arizona over Arizona State* by 8
Opponents are shooting only 38.3% against Smokin’ Herb’s Sun Devils, probably
because most of those opponents have stunk. In addition to their Ivy League-laden
non-con stretch, ASU opened Pac 12 play with two of the first three games vs. Utah
and Oregon State.
ARIZONA, 73-65.

Cornell* over Columbia by 2
Wichita State* over Creighton by 1
UCLA* over Oregon by 2
Boise State over Air Force* by 3
Tennessee* over Mississippi State by 15
UTEP* over SMU by 9

***BEST BET
Louisville* over Syracuse by 16
In a nationally televised game late in the regular season last year, Louisville was made
to look foolish by the Orange in a road game, which didn’t mean much – road games
in February rarely do when you’re ticket to the NCAA is already punched, and the
home team is also good, and playing for a perfect home season and a 30th win, which
Syracuse (then ranked #2) was. Championship level teams win home games against
other championship level teams. After that loss, Louisville didn’t lose another game
until Kentucky in the Final Four. Revenge! The Orange are turning the ball over 14
times per game this season (before the really hard part of the slate has hit), and that’s
a bad sign heading into this arena against this foe.
LOUISVILLE, 75-59.

Providence* over Villanova by 1
Kansas State* over Oklahoma by 10
Massachusetts* over George Washington by 9
Virginia* over Florida State by 3
San Francisco* over Loyola-Marymount by 6
Stanford* over California by 3
St. Joseph’s over Penn* by 14

***BEST BET
George Mason* over Hofstra by 28
Hofstra has had a few home revivals recently against the stiffs known as Georgia State
and William & Mary, but between those much-needed home wins was a semi-hidden
15-point loss at Delaware against a Delaware team that can’t shoot straight and really
isn’t much. With an overload of 6’8” and 6’9” players to bring off the bench, GMU
should control tempo (up) and alley-oop themselves to victory over a depth-shy and
eventually dispirited visitor. Seems like one match-up that coach Hewitt can’t screw
up.
GEORGE MASON, 80-52.

***BEST BET
Cincinnati* over Marquette by 18
Teams with productive size – either scoring or rebounding – have been giving the
Bearcats mucho trouble in the last few weeks. But Marquette’s 6’8”, 290 Davante
Gardner is only a 13-5 guy in barely more than 21 minutes per game.
A team shooting less than 30% from three-point range like Marquette
is would not figure to get many good looks elsewhere against Cincinnati’s swarming D.
Late-arriving ‘depth’ helper, guard Todd Mayo, has shot 2-for-14 from the field against three real opponents.
CINCINNATI, 74-56.

Richmond* over NC Charlotte by 5
Southern Miss* over UAB by 17

Georgetown over South Florida* by 5
Wouldn’t want to buy a ticket to this game featuring
lack of scorers.
GEORGETOWN, 46-41.

Alabama* over Texas A&M by 4
Central Florida over Houston* by 1
Ohio* over Toledo by 13
Michigan State* over Ohio State by 1
Western Kentucky* over Arkansas-LR by 2

Middle Tennessee* over UL-Lafayette by 19
MTS has already pasted ULL on the road, in a December conference game, 72-58.
Nobody in the Sun Belt is scoring much against them.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE, 71-52.

Detroit* over Illinois-Chicago by 15
Denver* over Utah State by 3
Cal Poly-SLO* over Cal-Santa Barbara by 8
VCU over Duquesne* by 10 (at Consul Energy Center)
Marshall* over East Carolina by 2
Old Dominion* over Georgia State by 8
Brown* over Yale by 3
Buffalo* over Bowling Green by 2
Ball State over Central Michigan* by 1
Akron over Kent State* by 3
UNLV* over Colorado State by 6
North Texas over Florida Atlantic* by 1
Wyoming* over San Diego State by 2
Florida International* over Troy by 5
Evansville* over Indiana State by 3
Saint Louis* over Rhode Island by 17
Wisconsin-Milwaukee* over Youngstown State by 1

**PREFERRED
Valparaiso* over Wright State by 19
Wright State’s coaches feared Valpo before the season began, citing them as the team
to beat in the Horizon League. While the Raiders have eight days to drill for this game,
the eight days won’t transform them from a skinny team that needs its outside shots
to go down, or a team that can find ways to slow down a good-shooting home side or
rebound whatever Valpo might miss.
VALPARAISO, 71-52.

Idaho over Texas-Arlington by 1
Iowa* over Wisconsin by 1
Notre Dame* over Rutgers by 11
USC* over Oregon State by 4
Northern Illinois* over Western Michigan by 1
Georgia* over LSU by 1
Arkansas State* over UL-Monroe by 15
Texas-San Antonio* over Texas State by 1

Louisiana Tech* over Seattle U. by 16
New Mexico State* over San Jose State by 6

**PREFERRED
Gonzaga over Butler* by 10
Don’t they know that non-conference season is over? Butler is dealing with learning
new conference foes, and a recent injury scare to leading scorer Rotnei Clarke that
might linger, so perhaps that gives Gonzaga an edge. ‘Zags say, ‘You can’t fool us, you’re that school that got to two consecutive NCAA Championship Games. That was supposed to be us, so we want to beat you for sure!
GONZAGA, 70-60.

BYU* over San Diego by 23
Kentucky over Auburn* by 5
CS Fullerton* over Long Beach State by 9
Pepperdine* over Santa Clara by 1
St. Mary’s over Portland by 20
Fresno State* over Nevada by 1
Washington State* over Colorado by 2
Cal-Irvine over Cal-Riverside* by 7
CS Northridge* over Pacific by 7
Washington* over Utah by 9
Hawaii* over Cal-Davis by 10

NBA BASKETBALL

San Antonio over *Atlanta by 2
The Spurs owned a winning spread record this season when playing with no rest, but
were just 2-7 ATS during their past nine road contests.
SAN ANTONIO 104-102.

*Charlotte over Sacramento by 2
Tyreke Evans is back in the lineup, but the Kings are playing for the second time in
two nights and haven’t been road chalk all season.
CHARLOTTE 101-99.

***BEST BET
*New Orleans over Golden State by 10
Getting Eric Gordon back is making a big difference for the Hornets. Gordon is teaming up with Greivis Vasquez to give the Hornets backcourt scoring punch and a high
energy level. New Orleans showed its improvement knocking off Houston and San
Antonio in consecutive home games earlier this month. The Warriors just played the
Spurs on Friday night and host the Clippers in a much bigger game on Monday. So
this matchup could get overlooked.
NEW ORLEANS 100-90.

Memphis over *Chicago by 3
The Grizzlies forced 16 turnovers in beating the Bulls, 80-71, at home on Dec. 17.
The Grizzlies had covered 10 of their first 16 road contests, while Chicago was a miserable 4-15 ATS in its first 19 games at United Center.
MEMPHIS 90-87.

Houston over *Minnesota by 5
Besieged by injuries and with Ricky Rubio practically a non-factor since coming back
from a blown out knee, Minnesota is trending downward. The Rockets have been redhot, by contrast, going 11-4 SU through this past Monday.
HOUSTON 107-102.

***BEST BET
*Utah over Cleveland by 21
The Jazz’s front court is too tall and physical for the Cavaliers minus Anderson Varejao.
Al Jefferson is headed for monster numbers in this matchup. Utah had covered 66 percent of its first 15 home contests. The Jazz also have had a ton of rest and preparation having last played on Monday. This marks the tail end of a five-game road swing for the Cavaliers.
UTAH 106-85.

*Portland over Milwaukee by 8
This isn’t the time to fade Portland at home. The Trail Blazers are getting a career year
from unsung Wesley Matthews while winning their last nine games at Rose Garden
through Jan. 12. Milwaukee is playing its fourth road game in seven days.
PORTLAND 102-94.

*Los Angeles Clippers over Washington by 12
The Wizards are finally getting healthier and had covered four of the last five times
when playing on zero rest. The Clippers face Golden State on the road Monday in a
much more crucial matchup.
LA CLIPPERS 105-93.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL WEEKEND LEAN SHEET

Kansas at Texas, Saturday, Jan. 19, 2:00 ET
This contest pits the top two defenses in the country in terms of field goal percentage allowed. At 15-1, Kansas has won 14 straight games since its only loss vs. Michigan State in the second game of the season, and while the Jayhawks are averaging 76.8 points per game offensively, their defense has allowed the lowest field goal percentage in the nation at a scant 34.2 percent. Texas is second in field goal percentage allowed at 34.3 percent, and the Longhorns lead the country in effective field goal percentage against, as they lead in three-point defense and rank third in two-point defense. The difference is that Texas does not shoot the ball well at all, ranking 253rd in offensive efficiency and 305th in effective field goal percentage for. The 'under' is 13-1-1 in the last 15 Kansas road games.
Lean: Under

Syracuse at Louisville, Saturday, Jan. 19, 4:00 ET
Louisville is now the top ranked team in the country and riding an 11-game winning streak, but the Cardinals should have their hands full with the Orange here. Louisville wins with stifling defense, leading the country in defensive efficiency and ranking second in turnovers forced. However, the Cardinals will not have their usual big defensive edge here against the suffocating Syracuse zone. The Orange rank third in defensive efficiency and fourth in effective field goal percentage allowed. Syracuse also ranks a good 22nd in offensive efficiency thanks to ranking sixth in the nation in offensive rebounding percentage. Syracuse swept two low scoring affairs between these teams last season including a 52-51 win here in Louisville. Home teams coming off of 10 straight wins (Louisville) are just 32-69-2 ATS since 2011.
Lean: Syracuse

Creighton at Wichita State, Saturday, Jan. 19, 4:00 ET
Creighton is an offensive juggernaut this season as it leads the country in both effective field goal percentage and three-point shooting at a sensational 45.4 percent while also ranking third in two-point shooting. Of course it helps having a player like Player of the Year candidate Doug McDermott who is shooting 56.8 percent from the field overall including an unheard of 50.7 percent from three-point land. However, defense is not a strong suit for the Bluejays as they are 85th in points against and 83rd in field goal percentage allowed. Wichita State can exploit that as the Shockers rank 47th in effective field goal percentage including hitting on 53.6 percent of their two-point shots. The 'over' is 41-25-2 since 2007 when Creighton went 'over' in its previous game.
Lean: Over

Oregon at UCLA, Saturday, Jan. 19, 4:00 ET
UCLA has turned its season around since two players, Tyler Lamb and big man Josh Smith, left the team early in the year. The Bruins have won nine straight games while employing mostly a four-guard offense and playing a ton of zone defense. That small lineup has UCLA ranked 14th in offensive efficiency, and because the Bruins usually have four ball-handlers on the floor, they protect the ball extremely well ranking third in the nation in offensive turnover percentage. Oregon is 14-2, but the Ducks have faced a schedule ranked 302nd in SOS, with one of the losses coming on the road to a UTEP team ranked 100th by Pomeroy. UCLA is 17-9 ATS in the last 26 home games if it was also home in its previous game.
Lean: UCLA

Study Group: Saturday's Top 25 NCAAB Betting Notes

Forget about the NFL, the big games are on the college basketball board this weekend. There are a number of huge Top 25 matchups Saturday and we have news and notes for all the action:

Missouri Tigers at Florida Gators (-13, 136)

For most of Billy Donovan’s first 16 seasons as the coach with No. 9 Florida, his teams have been strong offensive teams. This edition of the Gators is easily on pace to become the best defensive squad he’s had, something No. 16 Missouri may learn the hard way on Saturday when they meet for the first time ever. During his time in Gainesville, Donovan’s teams have surrendered an average of 66.8 points, but this team is ranked third in the nation in scoring defense at 51.7 points per game and coming off another fine effort in Thursday’s 68-47 victory at Texas A&M. The Tigers counter with the country’s best rebounding team, although the uncertain status of injured leading scorer Laurence Bowers looms large against the Gators’ front line. Missouri bounced back from a 15-point loss at Mississippi last Saturday with a 79-62 win over Georgia on Wednesday.

Kansas Jayhawks at Texas Longhorns (+8, 125)

With a potential marquee game on the horizon, Kansas will look to remain undefeated in Big 12 play when it visits struggling Texas on Saturday. The fourth-ranked Jayhawks enter as one of two teams without a loss in the conference. The other is No. 18 Kansas State, which hosts Kansas on Tuesday. After an overtime win against Iowa State to begin their Big 12 slate, the Jayhawks have barely been tested in victories over Texas Tech and Baylor. Freshman star Ben McLemore scored 17 points in the triumph over the Bears before exiting with a sprained right ankle. McLemore returned to practice Thursday and expects to play against the Longhorns. It has been a frustrating stretch for Texas, which lost back-to-back overtime affairs to begin Big 12 play and then lost by 20 at Iowa State last Saturday.

Arizona Wildcats at Arizona State Sun Devils (+6, 132)

An intense in-state rivalry will help take an early snapshot of the Pac-12 title race when Arizona State hosts seventh-ranked Arizona on Saturday afternoon. Both teams will look to avoid a costly second loss in what is shaping up to be a top-heavy league. The Wildcats are wrapping up a three-game road swing. They opened the stretch with their first loss - a 70-66 defeat at Oregon - but rebounded with an 80-70 win at Oregon State last Saturday. The Sun Devils also suffered their lone conference loss to the Ducks, losing 68-65 at Oregon on Sunday to snap a six-game win streak. Arizona has won 28 of the past 36 meetings in the series that dates to 1914, but Arizona State has claimed seven of the past 11, including an 87-80 home win in the most recent contest March 4.

Oklahoma Sooners at Kansas State Wildcats (-5, 124)

Oklahoma and No. 18 Kansas State are off to their best league starts in years but one will fall from the ranks of the Big 12 Conference's unbeaten on Saturday. The host Wildcats are 3-0 in Big 12 play for the second time since the league started in 1997 while the Sooners are 3-0 for the first time since an 11-0 start in 2009. Kansas State is undefeated at home and has won seven straight overall. The Sooners had five players score in double figures for the first time this year in Wednesday's 81-63 win against Texas Tech, Oklahoma's fifth straight.

Creighton Bluejays at Wichita State Shockers (-2.5, 141)

Doug McDermott and No. 10 Creighton travel to Wichita, Kan., for a matchup Saturday between the top two teams in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Bluejays are fresh off a 79-68 win over Northern Iowa on Tuesday. McDermott, the nation's second-leading scorer at 24 points per game, tallied 21 of his 31 points in the second half to turn a five-point halftime lead into a comfortable cushion. That performance came four nights after the returning consensus First Team All-American made 14 shots in a row, singlehandedly outscored Missouri State 28-24 in the second half and finished with 39 points and 10 rebounds in Creighton's 74-52 rout of the Bears. Wichita State hosts the Bluejays with only two blemishes: a 69-60 loss to Tennessee on Dec. 13 and a 71-67 defeat at the hands of Evansville on Sunday. The Shockers beat Illinois State 74-62 on Wednesday.

Syracuse Orange at Louisville Cardinals (-7, 135)

The Cardinals have breezed through their first four conference games and are coming off a 73-58 win at Connecticut on Monday, the same day they ascended to the top spot in the national polls for the third time in school history. The Orange have had a bit more trouble staying undefeated in league play, winning their past three games by 11 points or less, including a 72-61 home win over Villanova last Saturday. Louisville has won seven of the past nine meetings, but Syracuse claimed both contests last season.

Oregon Ducks at UCLA Bruins (-5, 144)

A season after struggling to put two teams into the NCAA Tournament, the Pac-12 appears to have a plethora of worthy candidates this season. Two of the conference’s best will jockey for early positioning atop the league standings on Saturday when No. 25 UCLA hosts Oregon. The Bruins have rolled off 10 consecutive wins and won their first five conference games for the first time since 2003-04 – coach Ben Howland's first season in Westwood – after defeating Oregon State 74-64 on Thursday. The 5-0 start has UCLA a half-game ahead of Washington and Oregon, the latter of which is on a six-game winning streak but nearly blew a late 10-point lead on the road in Thursday’s 76-74 triumph over USC. The Ducks’ 4-0 mark in league play is their best since the 1973-74 team began the Pac-8 season with the same record.

Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan State Spartans (Pick, 132)

No. 17 Michigan State has been on a role since dropping its Big Ten opener at Minnesota on Dec. 31. The Spartans will put their perfect January on the line Saturday, when they host No. 11 Ohio State. The Buckeyes have had six days off since hosting rival Michigan and knocking off the last unbeaten team in the country. Traditionally among the best defensive teams in the conference, Michigan State could have its hands full with Deshaun Thomas. Thomas leads the Big Ten in scoring at 20.3 points and has put up at least 20 in each of the last four contests. The Spartans got a big game from Adreian Payne following some team-imposed discipline on Wednesday and have gone over 80 points in each of their first two Big Ten home games. Michigan State is kicking off a stretch of four of five games against ranked teams with the Buckeyes.

VCU Rams at Duquesne Dukes (+12, 146)

Two nights after a hard-fought overtime win over St. Joseph's, 19th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth will shoot for its 13th consecutive victory when it travels to Duquesne on Saturday night at CONSOL Energy Center. It's a matchup of one of the preseason favorites to win the Atlantic 10 in VCU against a Duquesne squad picked to finish last in the 16-team league. The Rams outlasted St. Joseph's, 92-86, to remain undefeated in their first season of Atlantic 10 play. They haven't lost since dropping consecutive games to Duke and Missouri in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. The Dukes have dropped five straight, including their first three Atlantic 10 contests. They're coming off a 79-66 loss at Massachusetts on Thursday.

UNLV Runnin' Rebels at Colorado State Rams (-3.5, 139)

UNLV looks to snap another team’s long home winning streak when the 23rd-ranked Rebels visit Colorado State, which has won 23 straight home games at Moby Arena. UNLV ended San Diego State’s 10-game home winning streak with an 82-75 win on Wednesday, while Colorado State cruised to a 39-point win over Air Force. The Rams are ranked first nationally with a plus-14.1 rebound margin, but they’ll be tested by the physical Rebels. UNLV boasts one of the top freshmen in the country in forward Anthony Bennett, who leads the Rebels in scoring (19) and rebounds (8.9). The Rams have four players averaging at least 11.4 points, including top scorer Colton Iverson (14.9).

Marquette Golden Eagles at Cincinnati Bearcats (-7, 128)

Cincinnati will try to end a three-game home-losing streak Saturday night when the No. 24 Bearcats host Marquette in a Big East game. Cincinnati might be without one of its best players, senior point guard Cashmere Wright, who sprained his left knee early in the second half of Tuesday’s victory at DePaul and did not return. Wright did not suffer structural damage, the team reported, but is considered day-to-day in his recovery. Wright is second on the team in scoring (15.1) and leads in assists (3.7) and steals (1.9). He scored 20 points before the injury against DePaul and 23 last Saturday in a victory at Rutgers. Marquette has won six in a row, including two in overtime and the others by single digits. A win against the Bearcats would go a long way toward getting the Golden Eagles into the USA Today top 25 coaches poll.

San Diego State Aztecs at Wyoming Cowboys (-1.5, 118)

San Diego State visits Wyoming on Saturday looking to rebound from an 82-75 loss to No. 23 UNLV on Wednesday. Jamaal Franklin scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but the No. 14 Aztecs allowed the Rebels to shoot 51.6 percent and were outrebounded 41-28 in the loss. Wyoming lost to Fresno State 49-36 on Wednesday, shooting 24 percent from the field. The Cowboys lost two of their first three Mountain West games and are 2-2 since leading scorer Luke Martinez broke his right hand during a bar fight on Dec. 30. Martinez was also arrested for aggravated assault and suspended indefinitely over the weekend.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-12.5, 138)

Offensive efficiency was one of several reasons No. 20 Notre Dame was able to match its longest winning streak in coach Mike Brey’s tenure. On Saturday, the Fighting Irish hope to avoid their longest losing streak in almost three years when they host Rutgers. Notre Dame shot 53.3 percent and averaged 78.3 points during a 12-game run that ended with last Saturday’s 65-58 loss to Connecticut. The Irish fell under both marks for the second straight game in Tuesday’s 67-63 setback at St. John’s. Notre Dame hasn’t lost three in a row since Feb. 11-17, 2010, but will try to reassert its home dominance against the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers is off to its best start since beginning the 2005-06 season with a 12-4 record after Thursday’s 70-67 victory over South Florida.

Gonzaga Bulldogs at Butler Bulldogs (+2, 138)

Butler will be shorthanded when it hosts No. 8 Gonzaga in a non-conference game Saturday. The No. 13 Bulldogs will be without leading scorer Rotnei Clarke, who suffered a neck injury in last Saturday's victory at Dayton when he crashed headfirst into a support post under the basket. Clarke, a senior point guard who transferred from Arkansas, averages 16.3 points while shooting 44.4 percent from 3-point range. Alex Barlow is expected to start in his place for the second consecutive game, but the Bulldogs will need a team effort to fill his shoes in the scoring column. Gonzaga’s only loss this season came against Illinois, which also handed Butler one of its two defeats. Butler still has the size to match up with the Bulldogs. Andrew Smith, a 6-11 senior center who averages 12 points and 5.2 rebounds, will likely be locked up against Gonzaga’s leading scorer, 7-1 junior Kelly Olynyk.

Three Tips for Betting the Shortened NHL Season
by Jon Cambell

The NHL schedule has officially been released, which means we can begin to look at some puck value. Before we dig into the schedule (which we’ll do more in-depth this week) here are three items to keep in mind when betting this shortened 48-game season.

1. Look hard at underdogs on short rest – The tendency is to want to fade the team that has played a bunch in a short period, say four games in five nights. But keep in mind these lines will be inflated, which is something we learned from the NBA’s lockout-shortened season last year when teams would face the tiresome task of playing three games in three nights.

“No matter what the number was adjusted to the player felt they had to play it anyway,” said Jeff Sherman, oddsmaker at the Las Vegas Hotel.

Unlike the NBA last year, teams will only be playing within their own conference this season so I think we could see some value here on the squads playing on short rest as public perception skews the line.

2. Least change, most value – Look for teams that had the most success last season, combined with the least roster shake-ups this season.

“If you compare it to the NBA last year, the teams who had the least roster change, excelled the most in general,” says bet365 trades manager Aron Black.

Think of the L.A. Lakers this year. They made some monster moves in the summer that made them the overwhelming favorite in the West. Now they’re wondering if they’ll make the playoffs.

The Minnesota Wild and Carolina Hurricanes made splashes in free agency this offseason – and are seeing some strong Stanley Cup futures action as a result – but keep in mind neither team made the playoffs last year.

3. Chew on some chalk – Everybody loves an underdog, but with the Pens, Rangers and Kings all available as high as between 8-1 to 10-1, there is some strong value with the faves. Looking back to last season, the top eight teams in the East after 48 games were still the top eight teams in the East at the end of the season according to TSN. Same holds true for seven of the eight teams in the West last year. Looking back again to the NBA-shortened season, the preseason favorite Miami Heat won the championship against the West preseason No. 2 favorite, Oklahoma City.

NHL's Best & Worst Bets of the 2011-12 Season

With the NHL lockout finally coming to an end, it’s time to start thinking about how to handicap the upcoming season.

Here’s a look back at the best and worst bets on ice last season:

Best Moneyline

New Jersey Devils (48-28-2-4, +20.25 units)

The Devils may have come up short in the Stanley Cup final but New Jersey was the NHL bettors' champion, earning more than 20 units last season.

Worst Moneyline

Montreal Canadiens (31-35-4-12, -19.58 units)

Les Habitants weren’t just a headache for Montreal faithful and finished 31-35-4-12, dead last in the Eastern Conference, and burned just about any NHL bettor who touched them.

Best Puckline (ATS)

Carolina Hurricanes (51-31 ATS)

The Hurricanes only posted a 33-33-16 SU record and missed the playoffs, but they were one hell of a bet in 2011-12.

Phoenix Coyotes (50-32 ATS)

The Coyotes were the Pacific champs last season, making the transition from long-standing underdog to favorite on most nights.

Winnipeg Jets (48-34 ATS)

It seemed like the Jets were underdogs in almost every game last season, and it looks like that could be the case again this year.

Worst Puckline (ATS)

San Jose Sharks (28-54 ATS)

The Sharks had a respectable 43-29-10 record SU last season, but were still the worst bet in the league.

Philadelphia Flyers (29-53 ATS)

Much like the Sharks, the Flyers had success SU but failed miserably ATS.

Buffalo Sabres (33-49 ATS)

Buffalo found itself on the outside looking in come playoff time even with Ryan Miller in goal. Hopefully you faded them last season.

Best OVER Plays

Tampa Bay Lightning (52-29-1 O/U)

Steven Stamkos netted 60 goals and four others had 20 or more. Enough said.

Boston Bruins (46-33-3 O/U)

The Bruins had a balanced attack led by Tyler Seguin and five others who scored 20 times or more.

Toronto Maple Leafs (45-37-0 O/U)

This team is a mess. Horrible goaltending is just one reason for Toronto’s impressive over numbers.

Best UNDER Plays

Anaheim Ducks (31-47-4 O/U)

Anaheim was a one-trick pony last season and opposing clubs eventually found out how to shut down its top line of Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan. Oh, and they also have a pretty good goalie in Jonas Hiller.

Detroit Red Wings (34-44-4 O/U)

The Red Wings exemplified great team defense and injuries limited their offensive production throughout the season.

St. Louis Blues (21-43-18 O/U)

The Blues were incredibly hard to score against thanks to the formidable duo of Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak in net.
