Today is national signing day for all high school football players. Recruiting is not an exact science but it has become an adventure for both players and coaches. Here's a recruiting story from the past that I find interesting.

In the 1980s, there was a really good football player in Illinois, being nationally recruited. Back then, head coaches were the ones going out and signing top players. They had to be there at 8 o'clock in the morning (on signing day). Everybody was coming after this kid, so at 8 o'clock there were several head coaches waiting by the front door ready to sign this player. The door opens at 8 a.m. promptly and out walks a very famous Big Eight head coach who had spent the night on the kid's couch, outsmarting all the other coaches. He signed him before any of the other schools had a shot to get him. The name of the coach who signed the kid was not given, but I'd lay 7 to 5 it was Barry Switzer from Oklahoma.

I'm sure there will be a lot of good recruiting stories for this year's signing process. If you hear one, please post it.

According to Rivals, USC led the nation in signing 5 star recruits with 5. Other sources have them signing 4. USC only signed 12 recruits in total, but the other 7 or 8 who were not 5 star were 4 star. Talk about quality. It will be interesting to see what Kiffin does with them. I have always said that it is the coaches who make successful recruits, NOT the recruits themselves.
