MMA NEWS: UFC Interim Bantamweight Title on the Line as Renan Barao Defends Against Michael McDonald

The Don's Predictions

The Octagon travels back across the pond for a weekend dose of fistic fury.

UFC on Fuel TV 7 takes place on Saturday from the Wembley Arena in London, England. The event is headlined by the UFC Interim Bantamweight title bout between reigning interim champ Renan Barao and top challenger Michael McDonald. In addition to the title clash, the main card will feature five bouts with fighters trying to raise their stock on the ever expanding UFC roster.
Please note the different start time as the main card is live on Fuel TV beginning at 3:00PM eastern. The preliminary card will get the action started with a live stream on Facebook at noon eastern. Let’s preview the main card contests and predict a winner in each bout.

MAIN CARD (FUEL TV, 3:00PM Eastern)

UFC INTERIM BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE BOUT

Champion Renan Barao (29-1) vs. Michael “Mayday” McDonald (15-1)
The flyweights have taken the designation of being the fastest fighters in MMA but these guys are right in that ballpark despite being ten pounds heavier. Barao is in the midst of an incredible 30 fight unbeaten streak and captured the interim strap with a decisive five round decision over Urijah Faber in July. McDonald is one of the youngest fighters on the UFC roster and now looks to be the youngest champion. Barao trains with the famed Nova Uniao team in Brazil and has developed an attack that is solid in all areas. He will need those skills against an equally talented McDonald. If the fight hits the mat it will likely favor the Brazilian but McDonald will own the edge in punching power. Barao has enjoyed success against wrestlers like Faber and Scott Jorgensen but McDonald will bring a more dynamic and powerful striking attack that will test the chin of Barao. The cardio should be a wash in this bout even though Barao did go the full 25 minutes against Faber and McDonald has only gone three rounds twice in his 16 fight career. The thought here is that the fast and powerful hands of McDonald will cause problems for Barao and send him into a plan B which includes initiating takedown attempts. McDonald will be up to the task in defending the takedowns and will land enough heavy shots to wear down the interim champ and become the youngest UFC champion with a fourth round stoppage due to strikes.
McDonald over Barao by TKO in round four to win the Interim UFC Bantamweight title.

FEATURE BOUTS

Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier (13-2) vs. Cub Swanson (18-5)
On paper this bout looks to have fight of the night potential as well as title implications in the featherweight division. Poirier rebounded from a tough loss to Chan Sung Jung with a masterful submission of TUF winner Jonathan Brookins in December. Swanson has been on quite a roll of late with three straight knockout wins in 2012, including a first round pasting of Charles Oliveira in September. The winner of this bout will certainly be in the discussion for a UFC Featherweight title shot. Poirier is a rangy featherweight with a well-rounded skillset highlighted by a dangerous submission game. Swanson’s game is based mainly on his devastating striking power despite owning a well-rounded game as well. We should see action from the opening bell as both men will want to control the pace. Poirier will want to use his reach to control the distance and keep the fight where he feels most comfortable. Swanson has shown an uncanny ability to be patient and close the distance to land his crushing shots. Look for Poirier to control the range early but eventually Swanson will find the chin of the Diamond. Swanson has displayed an aggressive finishing instinct when he has his opponents hurt and he will have Poirier in uncharted territory. A fast packed action fight turns toward Swanson after a heavy shot in round two as he finishes the bout with a relentless attack on his hurt opponent.
Swanson over Poirier by TKO in round two.

Cyrille “The Snake” Diabate (19-8-1) vs. Jimi “Poster Boy” Manuwa (12-0)
For the lovers of stand-up wars, this is the fight for you. Diabate is a tall, rangy kick boxer while Manuwa is a powerhouse with dynamite in both hands. It will be the seventh Octagon appearance for the Frenchman Diabate and the second UFC bout for England’s Manuwa. Manuwa showed great power but questionable cardio in his stoppage of Kyle Kingsbury so we may see Diabate try to take this into the later rounds. On second thought, striker versus striker usually means someone goes to sleep early. Diabate is 6’6” but has not always fought like the taller man in the Octagon. If he lets Manuwa to get in punching range it will be a short night for Diabate. That’s what we think will happen, Manuwa gets in punching range early and lands the bomb that finishes Diabate in the opening frame to take away all the cardio suspense.
Manuwa over Diabate by knockout in round one.

Gunnar Nelson (10-0-1) vs. Jorge Santiago (25-10)
Nelson is a grappling ace who made a successful UFC debut with a slick submission of DaMarques Johnson in September. The Iceland native now takes on former Sengoku champion Santiago, who drops to welterweight in search of his first Octagon triumph since 2006. Nelson’s game is based off his dangerous submission game while Santiago has shown well-rounded skills despite a disappointing 1-4 mark in the UFC. Santiago will have a decided advantage in the striking portion of the fight and would seem to have the jiu jitsu skills to defend against a smaller welterweight in Nelson. Santiago has not been able to put his game together in the Octagon and despite having the tools to win this fight will likely find a way to come up short again. It only takes one lapse to wind up tapping or sleeping against Nelson and Santiago will make that mistake in the final round and finds himself tapping to a Nelson rear naked choke.
Nelson over Santiago by rear naked choke in round three.

Ryan “Big Deal” Jimmo (17-1) vs. James Te Huna (15-5)
Jimmo made a tremendous UFC debut with a seven second knockout of Anthony Perosh in July. The former MFC Light Heavyweight champion has now won an amazing 17 straight since a loss in his pro debut. He will face a fellow striker in the Australian Te Huna. Te Huna has won three straight in the Octagon and nine of his last ten overall. Jimmo has the lightning fast knockout on his resume but it is Te Huna who has the bigger power in this bout. Jimmo will need to be sharp on his feet and stay out of range of the heavy handed Te Huna. We will likely see Jimmo look for a takedown after tasting the power of Te Huna. If Jimmo can drag this fight into the deep water his cardio should give him an edge as Te Huna often expends a lot of energy throwing his big bombs early. Jimmo survives some early trouble then grinds out a razor thin split decision by taking control late in the fight.
Jimmo over Te Huna by split decision.
Che “Beautiful” Mills (15-5) vs. Matthew “Deep Waters” Riddle (7-3)
Mills is a Gloucester, England resident making his fourth UFC appearance. He takes on the entertaining brawler Riddle, who has had all ten of his professional MMA bouts inside the Octagon. Mills has won six of seven with two of those victories coming in the Octagon while TUF vet Riddle is unbeaten in his last three. Riddle has a wrestling background but often throws that out the window in order to create a crowd pleasing slugfest. That will be fine with Mills as he owns the cleaner and more precise striking game. Riddle will keep coming forward and throwing punches from crazy angles but Mills should be able to use his footwork and pepper the reckless Riddle with clean shots for the majority of the bout. After two rounds of futility on the feet, we may see Riddle shoot for a takedown in the final round, but don’t bet on it as the crowd will be on its feet for the stand-up war and Riddle will oblige despite being on the short end of a unanimous decision.
Mills over Riddle by unanimous decision.

MMA NEWS: UFC on Fuel TV 7 Prelims loaded With Top European Fighters

Live On: Saturday February 16, 2013 Prelims Stream Live on Facebook at 12:15PM Eastern

The Don's Predictions

After a rare off weekend the UFC will be back in action on Saturday.

This time the Octagon will travel across the Atlantic as the Wembley Arena in London will host UFC on Fuel TV 7. The main event will be a highly competitive battle for the UFC Interim Bantamweight title as interim titleholder Renan Barao battles rising star Michael McDonald. The main card will be broadcast live on Fuel TV with a different start time. The action on Fuel TV will begin at 3:00PM eastern time. In addition to the title clash, there will be five other bouts featuring rising prospects and contenders looking to take the next step toward UFC stardom.
Prior to the main card action there will be six preliminary card tilts that get underway at noon eastern time. The half dozen undercard bouts will stream live on Facebook. As is the norm with most European events, the prelims will feature a heavy dose of notable European fighters. Here’s a look at the preliminary bouts along with predictions on which fighters will earn victories in London.
PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook, 12:00 Noon Eastern)

Terry Etim (15-4) vs. Renee Forte (7-2)
Etim was on the wrong end of the knockout of the year for 2012 when he was drilled by an Edson Barboza spinning wheel kick in January. The Liverpool native returns to the Octagon on his home turf to take on Team Nogueira’s Forte. Forte was tapped by a Sergio Moraes rear naked choke in October in Brazil. Forte moves back to his more natural lightweight division for this bout and will certainly look to test Etim’s chin early in hopes of finding lingering effects from the Barboza knockout. Etim will use his height and reach advantage to keep Forte at range and set up his attack with his long range jab and kicks. Forte’s thwarted attempts to close range will cause frustration and sloppy long range takedown attempts. One of those undisciplined shots will land Forte in an Etim guillotine choke and get the hometown favorite a submission victory late in round two.
Etim over Forte by guillotine choke submission in round two.

Danny “Last Call” Castillo (14-5) vs. Paul Sass (13-1)
This lightweight clash has fight of the night potential has the rugged Team Alpha Male wrestler Castillo against Liverpool submission master Sass. Sass will be looking to rebound from his first pro loss as he tapped to a Matt Wiman armbar in September. Castillo will also look to rebound from a disappointing loss as he was stopped by Michael Johnson after nearly finishing the fight in the opening round. Castillo does have the wrestling base but showed good power in his last bout while Sass simply uses any means necessary to get the fight to the ground. Castillo has the wrestling skills to avoid any Sass takedowns but there will likely be clinch opportunities for Sass pull guard and get the fight in his world. Castillo will look to rain down punches from top position but Sass will take a shot or two in order to trap an arm or gain positional advantage. Castillo may power out once or twice but eventually Sass will get the legs up and lock in a triangle that forces a tap from Castillo in the middle round.
Sass over Castillo by triangle choke submission in round two.

Josh “The Fluke” Grispi (14-4) vs. Andy Ogle (8-2)
Grispi was the hot featherweight prospect before his current three fight losing skid that includes a submission loss to Rani Yahya in August. Ogle hails from Sunderland, England and makes his second Octagon appearance after dropping a disputed split decision to Akira Corassani in September. This is a make or break fight for Grispi based on the losing streak and he will need to rediscover the form that led him to a 14-1 record. He faces a gritty and relentless opponent in Ogle. Ogle will be looking to stay in the face of Grispi and not allow for any distance to land long range punches and kicks. Ogle tends to rush in with his guard down which should allow Grispi to make him pay and use footwork to stay out of range. It won’t be a pretty fight but it will be a beauty for Grispi as he gets back in the win column with a hard fought unanimous decision nod.
Grispi over Ogle by unanimous decision.

Stanislav Nedkov (12-0) vs. Tom “Kong” Watson (15-5)
Nedkov appeared to have his unbeaten run ended by Thiago Silva in November but Silva’s win was reversed to a no-contest after a failed drug test. Watson hails from England but has been training lately in Albuquerque at Jackson’s MMA. Despite training across the pond Watson will have the London crowd in full throat against the Bulgarian. Watson is ever the entertainer but has been looking to utilize his fighting skills more than his showmanship since moving to Jackson’s. Nedkov makes his middleweight debut and brings a blistering early pace with heavy punches coming from all angles. Watson has a solid chin and should be able to move well enough to avoid the big shots. As the fight progresses Nedkov will feel the effects of the weight cut and questionable cardio and will fade, allowing Watson will come on strong and take control. With Nedkov gassed in the final round, Watson turns up the heat and finishes the fight with some relentless ground and pound for his first UFC win.
Watson over Nedkov by TKO in round three.

Vaughan Lee (12-8-1) vs. Motonobu Tezuka (19-5-4)
Lee is a popular local favorite from Birmingham, England making his fourth UFC appearance. Tezuka returns for his second visit into Octagon after dropping a split decision to Alex Caceres in November. Lee is a tough customer with a dangerous submission game and adequate striking while Tezuka brings a traditional Japanese style of grinding and grappling. Tezuka is a character and likes to put on a show and Lee often takes chances in the ground game. Lee’s approach has led to many submission wins but has also left him vulnerable to giving up position. The wide open attack from Lee will keep the more methodical Tezuka off balance and lead to openings for the fans to cheer a submission victory for their local fave. Lee finishes Tezuka in round two with a rear naked choke.
Lee over Tezuka by rear naked choke submission in round two.

Ulysses “Useless” Gomez (9-3) vs. Phil “Billy” Harris (21-10)
Both flyweights enter this bout coming off losses in the respective Octagon debuts. Gomez was stopped by title challenger John Moraga in August while Harris succumbed to a Darren Uyenoyama rear naked choke in October. The loss snapped a five fight win streak for Harris while Gomez had won seven of eight prior to the Moraga setback. Both men own most of their wins via submission but Gomez would appear to have the better stand-up attack and an edge in the clinch game. Much of the bout will be spent searching for an edge in position and while Harris will have the home crowd in his corner it will be Gomez who ends up with the advantage in the striking and the many scrambles that are likely in this contest. A hard fought contest gets the evening off to a good start even though the London crowd will not like Gomez walking out with the unanimous decision victory.
Gomez over Harris by unanimous decision.

NBA Skills Challenge

Parker Favorite Over Much Younger Field

If you’re one of those people crying that the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contests lacks real All-Stars, then the Skills Challenge is likely your favorite event of All-Star Saturday Night.

The annual dribble-pass-shoot competition may not be as sexy as the dunk contest but it has touted the most name value of the three All-Star Weekend events, with past winners including Deron Williams, Baron Davis, Derrick Rose, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Dwyane Wade and reigning champion, San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker.

That was, until 2013. Parker, who is a +275 favorite to defend his Skill Challenge crown, is one of just two All-Stars among this year’s contenders. Jrue Holiday (+500) of the Philadelphia 76ers is the other.

Those two will go up against Hawks guard Jeff Teague (+350), Brandon Knight (+500) of the Pistons, Trail Blazers rookie Damian Lillard (+500), and Jeremy Lin (+500) of the Rockets.

While the field isn’t as deep as past year’s, Parker is substantially older than his competition at age 30. The average age of the other five contestants is almost 22.5 years old. In a timed event with a lot having to do with speed from station to station, the veteran could be at a disadvantage.

Parker has been shouldering the load for the Spurs in recent weeks, with Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili nursing injuries. He missed Monday’s win over the Chicago Bulls due to swelling around his knee but played in the Spurs’ final game before the break, scoring 24 points and adding seven assists and six rebounds in a win over Cleveland Wednesday.

Parker won last year’s Skills Challenge with a final-round time of 32.8 seconds – more than seven seconds over the event’s all-time best mark set by Williams at the 2008 All-Star Weekend. Parker's 2012 effort was also the third-slowest time for a winner in the 10-year history of the event.

Curry Favored, but Underdogs Have Hot Hand in 3-Point Contest

When it comes to taking and making shots from beyond the 3-point arc, few NBA players are on the same level as Stephen Curry.

That’s why the Golden State Warriors’ baby-faced bomber is the favorite to win this Saturday’s annual All-Star 3-point Shootout. But, while Curry is the oddsmakers’ pick, you may not want to make him yours.

Underdogs have had the hottest hands in recent 3-point shootouts, like last year’s winner Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who was the biggest pup in the litter at +600. In fact, the last four 3-point champions were not the betting favorite heading into the event.

Behind Love’s title in 2012, James Jones of the Miami Heat won at +450 in 2011, Paul Pierce of the Celtics won at +400 in 2010, and Daequan Cook of the Heat won at +750 in 2009 – also the biggest odds on the board.

Books opened Curry, who is second in the NBA in 3-point percentage (44.7 percent), at +300 and early action has taken those odds down to +275 as of Thursday. He is up against Steve Novak (+400) of the Knicks, Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving (+350), Spurs forward Matt Bonner (+600), Ryan Anderson (+450) of the Hornets, and Pacers guard George Paul (+600).

Saturday is Curry’s second 3-point contest in the past four seasons. He finished second to Pierce in 2010, losing 20-17 in the final round after sinking a first-round best 18 shots from distance. He entered that event as a +300 co-favorite.

Anderson is the only other contestant with experience in the 3-point shootout, missing the cut with 17 makes in the first round after being the second-overall favorite at +325 last year. This season, he is shooting just over 40 percent from the arc and leads the league in 3-point attempts (396).

Last year, Love won with 17 makes in a tie-breaker against Kevin Durant, but both hit just 16 in the final round. That was the lowest winning total in the past 10 All-Star Weekends, with the average winning score being 20.2 makes since 2003.

For you horse racing bettors, who handicap pedigree, Curry's father - legendary marksman Dell Curry - competed in the 3-point shootout twice in his career. In 1992, he hit only 11 and failed to make it out of the first round. In 1994, the elder Curry hit just 12 in another first-round flop.

WEEKEND CBB LEAN SHEET

Villanova at Connecticut, Saturday, Feb. 16, 12:00 ET
These are two teams heading in opposite directions. Connecticut has won five of its last six games and is flying high after upsetting Syracuse 66-58 here at home on Wednesday. The Huskies are now third in the Big East in effective field goal percentage and second in three-point shooting at 37.0 percent, which is an area they can exploit as Villanova ranks 272nd nationally and 14th in the Big East in three-point defense. The Wildcats received some national notoriety last month with back-to-back upsets of Louisville and Syracuse, but they have since come back to earth going 2-3 in their last five games with the two wins coming vs. conference lightweights South Florida and DePaul. Villanova is 8-16-1 ATS in its last 25 conference games following a straight up loss.
LEAN: UCONN

Pittsburgh at Marquette, Saturday, Feb. 16, 1:00 ET
Pittsburgh just might be the most underrated team in the country right now, as with practically no fanfare whatsoever the Panthers are up to fourth overall in the country on the Pomeroy Ratings! Pittsburgh ranks ninth in offensive efficiency and ninth in defensive efficiency, making the Panthers one of only two teams to rank in the top 10 in both categories with the other being Florida. The Panthers have won seven of their last eight games with the only loss being by three points at Louisville. They are also seeking revenge for an earlier 74-67 overtime loss at home to Marquette. The Golden Eagles are 8-3 in conference, but they may be badly outscored from behind the three-point arc as they are 14th in the conference in three-point shooting and 12th in three-point defense. Pittsburgh is 9-5 ATS in its last 14 games when playing its second straight road game.
LEAN: PITT

Virginia Tech at NC State, Saturday, Feb. 16, 2:00 ET
NC State has been a disappointment after being picked by many to win the ACC this season, but at least the Wolfpack have been exciting! They rank eighth in the country in offensive efficiency, ninth in three-point shooting and 21st in two-point shooting while averaging 78.0 points overall and 82.4 points here at home, and they are the only ACC team to reach 70 points vs. the Miami Hurricanes in a 79-78 loss. However, they rank 137th in defensive efficiency, which has resulted in a lot of shootouts. Now, Virginia Tech is on a seven-game losing streak but NC State is capable of scoring 90 points in Raleigh vs. a Hokies' defense ranked 238th in efficiency, so Virginia Tech may not need to do much to help put this 'over'. The 'over' is 19-7 in the last 26 NC State home games.
LEAN: OVER

UCLA at Stanford, Saturday, Feb. 16, 4:00 ET
UCLA has not lived up to preseason expectations mainly due to two players leaving the team, but the Bruins still rank a good 31st in offensive efficiency while usually playing a four-guard set along with big man Travis Wear. The highly touted freshman class has done its part with Shabazz Muhammad, Jordan Adams and Kyle Anderson combining for 42.6 points per game, but the defense has taken a hit with the smaller lineup ranking 117th in effective field goal percentage allowed. Stanford is averaging 70.3 points per game here at home this season as it ranks third in the Pac-12 in offensive efficiency, and it leads the conference in three-point shooting at a blistering 45.1 percent during league play. The 'over' is 10-3 in the last 13 head-to-head meetings between these teams.
LEAN: OVER

Temple at Massachusetts, Saturday, Feb. 16, 6:00 ET
At 16-7, Temple is fighting for an NCAA Tournament berth and a big road win here would help the Owls' cause. Temple ranks 41st in the country in offensive efficiency and it has been excellent at ball protection, ranking 11th in all the land in offensive turnover percentage. That means that the Owls should be able to run whichever sets it chooses here as Massachusetts ranks only 208th in defensive turnover percentage. The Minutemen are not a great shooting team either, ranking 149th in effective field goal percentage. This is also a letdown spot for Massachusetts, who will be coming off of a battle with conference kingpin VCU on Thursday. Temple is 59-33-2 ATS in its last 94 conference games.
