Greek gambler, Harris Kakavas, is making an appeal to the Australian justice in an attempt to get a 20-million dollar compensation from the Crown casino in Melbourne, where he played over a half billion dollars in one year.
He maintains that the casino took advantage of his gambling addiction. The court decided that the casino is not to blame for Kakavas’ loss, but his gambling addiction. His case will be heard by the Supreme Court on April 4 and 5.
Kakavas, who said that he was hiding his passion for gambling from his wife, lost more than 30 million dollars in 2005 and 2006. Professor of Psychology Alexander Blazynski testified in court that Kakavas was betting 300,000 dollars each time to satisfy the passion of his addiction. “He is a compulsive gambler,” he said.
Kakavas’ main argument is that people of the casino knew that he was a compulsive gambler, and though he was banned to play for life, they used unfair methods to entice him.
Kakavas testified in court that when he lost all his money, the management of the casino took him to a bank to withdraw all his money. “I had only $ 345,000 left in the account. The casino gave me a car to go and make the withdrawal. I got the money, I went back to the casino and played. I lost everything ” he testified in court.
Judge David Harper, who condemned Kakavas, also criticized the casino for the way it handled the whole issue.
