Yea Yea Yea I know fellow Minnesota old timers the tournament is not as great as it was in the 1970's...not on a major TV station in the Twin cities (channel 45 now not channel 5).. they might not sell out every single session..But its still an iconic event for St. Paul and the state...so save your typing!!
top 5 teams seeded, 4 always matched up with 5 seed now and the other 3 teams unseeded and random draw to make the Quarter final matchups..have to win 3 in a row to win state
Game 1 quarter final noon Thursday 3/7
Duluth East Greyhounds 24-4 #2 (seed) vs Moorhead Spuds 14-11-2
Two teams with huge tradition and an ALL NORTHERN MINNESOTA Quarter Final MAtchup. Some are super pissed that the two north teams are Matched up this early but those conspiracy guys also feel that they wanted to guarantee a North team in the SEMIS and not just have METRO..as the "Northern" teams are considered the darlings. One interesting Fact is Moorhead is 0-7 in State final games! They tend to win, even upset teams in early rounds and run out of steam. Duluth EAST was shocked in first round last year as the #1 seed by Lakeville North. Do they have the leadership to make sure that doesn ot happen again
East - 1 1/2 -130
total 5 ½ over -125
Game 2 quarter final
Edina Hornets 22-6 (#3 seed) vs Lakeville North 11-16-1
Every year a team has to come out of the Southern part of the state. In the past decade that is usually one of the two far Southern suburb massive school team Lakeville North or south. They just have no other real teams in the section . they are not a strong program but they do play in the Conferences where they play all the great metro teams so the record suffers. Consider them a Decent sub 0.500 team as a result. Last year they shocked the State and Beat #1 seed Duluth East. You never know. Edina is perhaps the TEAM as far as tradition, excellence, state titles, and one team most like to hate as a result. Very affluent tight night suburb. Their public school kids tend to stay in the program and not transfer out or move out.
Edina – 2 ½ +120
Total 5 ½ over -150
Game 3 quarter final 6pm
Hill Murray Pioneers (#1 seed) 25-2-1 vs Eastridge Lightening 18-9-1
The Pioneers are back again! This is the Private School that everyone Loves to hate. Except their loyal fan and alumni base and as a ST PAUL area school this is home area. Last year they lost the championship game 5-1, perhaps that was meant to be as the winning team suffered the unfortunate paralysis of a JV player that season and the entire hockey world came to support Jack Jablonski including Hill Murray fans which raised more money for his foundation him than any other school. So perhaps that result was meant to be. But this year Benidle was eliminated in region finals and the Pioneers are the #1 seed in the tournament. They lost once to state tournament entrant Wayzata (the team that knocked out Belidle) the other loss was to a rival single A school St. Thomas who will play in its last small school tournament this year and next year play with the big boys. During the season they beat Moorhead, Edina, Lakeville North. Eastridge nobody figured would be here, they have little tradition and rode a hot goalie to State. They will be 2 games and go home but a great accomplishment.
Hill – 2 ½ even
Total 5 ½ under -120
Wayzata 21-7 #4 seed vs Centennial 22-4-1 #5 seed
Wayzata came out of the toughest section in the state where about 4 teams could make this field! They have some losses but they play top teams virtually every night. They are a legit #4 team and have a win over Hill Murray this year. Centennial seems to get good every 10 years or so for a short period. They don’t really play too many top teams so the 22-4-1 might look like upset potential here but maybe not so fast. This might be the best highest scoring game of the night.. A great night scap to finish it off.
Wayzeta - 1 ½ +120
Total 6 over -115
Overall odds
Hill Murray 2-1
Duluth East 2-1
Edina 3.5-1
