The Patriots chose not to franchise Wes Welker (or anyone, for that matter) on Monday, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a plan at slot receiver if Welker is not a Patriot next season.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, the Pats have a replacement in mind in Danny Amendola. Florio, who was a guest on the Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday morning, hinted that the Pats plan to sign Amendola next week.
“[The Patriots] need to work something out by next Tuesday,” Florio said. “The problem is they couldn’t franchise [Welker] because it would cost them $11.4 million to keep him around.

“The ace in the hole for the Patriots is Danny Amendola.”

Amendola caught 63 passes for 666 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games in an injury-shortened 2012.

“He’s the slot receiver from the Rams, several years younger [than Welker], and he’s had plenty of injuries, but he’s one of the toughest players in the NFL,” Florio explained. “It could be that the Patriots already have plans — and tampering’s not supposed to be happening. but every team is doing it. But they may already have an understanding that on the first day of free agency, they’re going to ink Danny Amendola to replace Wes Welker, which would make a lot of sense if that’s what they do.

“The Rams couldn’t justify putting the franchise tag on Amendola because, for a slot receiver, to pay him $10 million, you just can’t justify paying him that much money, but it’s an important position to take care of. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Amendola is a Patriot next Tuesday.”

Pats offense will take a huge step back without Welker...

Agreed. His style is suited perfectly for the offense they run....his chemistry w Brady...and he won't be easily replaced. Bottom line; he moves the chains for that offense.

Welker is a system player, not a franchise player. He has average speed, average hands, but above average hustle. Sure the guy has tons of catches, but so do the Pats TE's. Brady and Bill can adjust the system to play to their strengths, and Amendola would fit in just fine as a Welker replacement assuming he stays healthy. Sign Danny for half the price, mix him in with Edelman, and use that free cap space to bolster the secondary and the Pats will be in a much better place.

Don't gloss over the fact that Welker has had some seriously non-clutch drops in prior superbowl and playoff losses...

Amendola is Welker lite -- he would do well in the Pats system.
just needs to wear more padding during games so he doesnt get injured so easily.

Welker cost them the Super Bowl and he is older and expensive.........Furthermore, the Patriots will get rid of anybody not named Tom Brady..It is just their organization business model and a very successful one at that

Thought they might draft Tavon Austin as a cheaper replacement, same type player with little more speed.

I hope they resign Welker, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't. It's always about money management in order to have the deepest roster for them.

Amendola would be a very good replacement, and my guess is drafting a WR is high on their list

as for dropping off because they let a star player go, I just say that I've heard that argument often times in the past, and it's batting .000
