</time>Passengers who were being kept on board the Carnival Dream ship docked in St. Maarten while crews work to repair a problem with the propulsion system, are now being offered the opportunity to fly home.

Carnival Corp. said on Thursday it is making arrangements to fly home all passengers on its Carnival Dream ship, now stuck in port in St. Maarten in the Caribbean, by private charters and will give them a refund equivalent to three days of the trip, plus a 50 percent discount on a future cruise.

Carnival said its engineers are still looking into the technical issue that affected the Carnival Dream's backup emergency diesel generator Wednesday night.

The ship was stuck at port in St. Maarten in the Caribbean on Thursday with equipment trouble, a month after another Carnival vessel was disabled in the Gulf of Mexico by a fire, trapping thousands of passengers for nearly five days.
The captain of the Carnival Dream reported a problem with the emergency diesel generator, which controls the ship's propulsion, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said.

The Coast Guard first learned of a problem aboard the ship from a passenger at about 3 a.m. local time, said Chief Petty Officer Ryan Doss in Miami.

The ship was scheduled to leave St. Maarten on Thursday and was due back at Cape Canaveral, Fla., on Saturday, he said.

Carnival Corp., which operates Carnival Cruise and a number of other cruise lines, was not immediately available for comment.

Carnival Cruise Lines President and Chief Executive Gerry Cahill said earlier this week that the company had launched a comprehensive review of its entire fleet after a fire crippled the Carnival Triumph in the Gulf of Mexico last month.
CNN reported that passengers aboard the Carnival Dream had contacted the cable news channel complaining of power outages and overflowing toilets, tales reminiscent of the troubles on the Carnival Triumph.

The Triumph was returning to Galveston, Texas, from Cozumel, Mexico, on the third day of a four-day cruise when an engine-room fire knocked out power and plumbing throughout most of the ship, which was carrying more than 4,200 people.

In a saga that received widespread media coverage, passengers described an overpowering stench on parts of the ship and complained that toilets and drainpipes had overflowed, soaking many cabins and interior passages in raw sewage.
The Triumph eventually was towed into port in Mobile, Ala., by tugboats, creating another public relations nightmare for the cruise giant. Last year, its Costa Concordia luxury ship ran aground off the coast of Italy, with 32 people killed.
On Thursday, Doss said the Carnival Dream's captain had not confirmed the reports of malfunctioning toilets or power outages.

"And we asked," Doss said. "The captain has reported that the main generator is still working. That generator is what controls everything else on the ship, such as power (and) sewage."

The compensation offered is kind of underwhelming.

If they have publically traded stock, I'd think it would drop bigtime, who is going to cruise with them after two incidents in a month ?

Thats what I was thinking. I only have 3 weeks vacation per year at my job. I'd be pretty pissed off if I wasted it on a bum cruise and only got the crummy compensation package.

I never ruled out a cruise but also never really seriously considered taking one either. Since all these ships seem to sink lately or break down, cruising it up has dropped down on my bucket list even farther.

My bottom bucket list things

  • Go to a NASCAR race
  • sky dive
  • Pick poppy's in Afghanistan
  • Vacation in Syria
  • take a Cruise
  • play Russian roulette

I am assuming the stock will take a dive also, would it be a good time to invest then? Will this be like Netflix and it will jump back up after the big freak out is over?

The company is offering very little. These people already bought their return airfare tickets, so the earlier flight is meaningless, and they only pro-rate the refund after ruining your vacation ! These people won't want another Carnival cruise for 50% off.

Cruisers tend to travel this way often and are repeat customers, these people and many more will avoid this company forever. It's like flying an airline that crashes a lot.

a full refund wouldn't be nearly enough to make up for this.
