i've been lurking in these forums (mostly nfl forum) for a few years now and have learned alot ie money mgmt, perception, sportsbooks/bookies etc.

probably one of the things that intrigues me the most is the number of scammers that appear and re-apear over the years under different names, and the patterns you can see year after year. i see the same arguments and trash-talking,backtracking.

I'm also intrigued by the number of people that seem to make a living doing this, on the book side , touting, and gambling.

whats interesting is how there are $20-50 players, and then there are guys that are betting thousands (or at least claiming to)

i have a couple of questions which you can answer if you feel comfortable doing so..

what do you make, your bankroll, your typical bet size and sports you bet on?

for me:
make 95k/year in a legitimate job, bankroll is 2k, bet size is NFL (100-300) CFB (50 rarely bet though), nba (50-200)

ive never met any of you but i imagine the 50$ players are college kids, and the guys betting 1k or more are in their 40's hard drinkers and chain smokers... am i way off base or not??

Less than 1% of posters here make a living gambling and that's a conservative percentage.

I don't think you have to have low income to have a low bankroll. If you realize all the money is going down the drain anyway what's the point of betting big?

The 2 most important things I learned about sports betting came from Viejo Dinosaur and sharky99, both here at theRX.

Viejo said something like "I wouldn't try to make a living by sports gambling."

sharky99 said something like "sports gambling is pretty hard to come out ahead".

After 10 years of sports gambling I have come out ahead only 1 of those years. I have since quit.

I'm sure there are those who come out ahead and there are some who do it as a career but I haven't figure it out yet.

gambling is like a savings account where you pay the interest for the ability to save.

some people can save $200 a week, and after 9 weeks (2 months), they have $1800 in their savings account. then maybe buy something nice or build on top of it.

gamblers cannot save their money. If we didn't gamble, we'd waste our money on more expensive liquor, extra steak/lobster dinners, etc. We have a different way to save up for that TV. Gamblers will lose $200 a week on average, then on the 9th week, win $1500.

i don't think its necessarily that hard to beat a sport, there is a 50% chance you get the right side. the challenge is staying disciplined and not getting greedy.

one of things i've learned from reading this forum and some others: there is definitely an art to making a post/thread. i find myself clicking or not clicking on certain threads based on that sometimes.

wise words.... I am usually a 25$-50$ bettor just for fun bet off and on... I have been on the forums for 13+ yrs... and I agree with enfuego except of that 1% that say they win at betting half LIE about winning somf go even as far as making up fake tickets to "prove" they won... that's conservative..I rarely believe ANYTHING I read on the forums.... except from certain people I know for years and years.

Its like when you where in highschool and the "stud" guy said he got all the girls and had sex before.. Well we know its the ones that don't brag that really had the sex... same theory with gambling IMO

when in a slump.. slow down your betting, or quit entirely, and/or make very small bets till you get back on track.

Take me for example... I had a bad run in college hoops for a week a month ago... since then I have bet maybe 4 games.

got to pace yourself.

Btcl is more important than people think, even though most sports bettors don't even know what btcl means.... There aren't many who are able to predict where the line will close, but for those who are able to do this it is the difference between being a lifetime winner and being a lifetime loser.... I had to lose for almost two decades before I figured this out, once you're able to successfully predict where the line will close that is when you will have the edge, not the book... Just my two cents.
