The Tonight Show is heading back to New York, with Jimmy Fallon expected to take over for longtime host Jay Leno by the fall of 2014 at the latest, The New York Times reports. The changeover would bring the late-night TV staple back to the East coast for the first time since 1972, when Johnny Carson moved it to Burbank, California.

While NBC has yet to complete the deal and an exact timetable hasn't been finalized, several network executives told the Times that a commitment has been made to Fallon, the current host of Late Night after The Tonight Show. The decision to promote Fallon reportedly came after the network grew concerned they might lose their chance to secure a younger demographic in the long-term; ABC recently moved its late-night star, Jimmy Kimmel, to the 11:30 p.m. timeslot, where he now goes head-to-head with Leno and The Late Show with David Letterman.

An NBC spokeswoman declined to comment on the move but confirmed that the network is building a new "state-of-the-art studio for Mr. Fallon" in its headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. That construction is part of general renovations being undertaken by Comcast, which completed its takeover of NBC this week.

Though the change would prevent NBC from losing Fallon to a competing network, it is not without risk. Leno continues to dominate the late-night ratings race even with Kimmel as his direct competition, and he typically draws the most viewers in the 18-to-49 demographic coveted most by advertisers. "Jay manages to stay ahead of Kimmel," said one executive involved in the switch. "How often has that guy been underestimated?

I like Jay but I like Jimmy Kimmel the best I think. Letterman is so much better when he doesn't talk politics.

I am indifferent about location on this.. but late night tv on EST time would mean Cali has to watch later than normal right?

That's a lot of hater there. I don't hate Fallon or care either to be honest. I think the American TV late night format is old and tired. Recently I've been watching a show from the UK called The Graham Norton Show and it blows anything from America out of the water.

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

I agree, He is so not funny. I am never up that late, but if by chance I am , I always turn on Craig Ferguson. So much funnier than Fallon IMO.

I think there is something going on behind the scenes with Leno and the network that we aren't hearing about. The "we're thinking of the future with Fallon" excuse is wearing kind of thin. They tried the same thing with Conan and it didn't work. You don't abruptly change your direction when your ratings are blowing everybody else out of the water. Leno and NBC obviously have some kind of rift going on with each other that go beyond money or ratings.

That will make Jimmy Kimmel the only late night talk show worth watching except for Ferguson.

I heard about this a few weeks ago when it was still a rumor. I've been watching The Tonight Show since the early 70's and even with Jay it's been my favorite.

So I try to watch Fallon and I guess I'm just biased against him from his SNL, messy-hair days. Last night he told a joke and I thought "that was horrible". Then, when I thought about the joke it was moderately amusing it was just his delivery. He looks like the son of the Joker with his wide grin.

This is the end of The Tonight Show. Mark my words here.

Carson was and always will be the best. Fallon makes alot of sense to try and get the SNL crowd to watch during the week.
