[h=1]Ed Reed on the verge of becoming a Texan[/h] Posted on March 20, 2013 at 6:08 pm by Tania Ganguli in General
Ed Reed will be signing with the Houston Texans. Team officials and Reed are hammering out final details on the contract, which could be a two-year deal, rather than the three-year deal initially offered according to a person familiar with the negotiation.

In one of the initial reports, Reed told NFL Network’s Albert Breer that while nothing was official, “unless something changes,” he would be signing with the Texans.
Reed spent his first 11 NFL seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and has mulled his options since visiting with the Texans last Thursday and Friday. The Texans offered him a three-year deal worth $4 million per year.
Possibly delaying the deal becoming official is the fact that Texans general manager Rick Smith is currently flying back from Phoenix where he was at the NFL league meetings.

This reminds me of the Sharper signing for the Saints in 09.
Sharper had the single greatest season of any defensive player I have ever seen that season.

During the end of the season, I really thought he was going to sign with the Pats.

Haven't seen anyone point this out but isn't it crazy how all at the same time all these old legend type guys who were either the best or 1 of the best defensive players on SB teams and legends for those teams are all FAs right now...

Freeney
Osi
Urlacher
Reed (just signed)
Harrison
Woodson

That is 4 recent DPOYs.....All won SBs with their teams recently besides Urlacher.

Joe Flacco decided to let him walk.

No he didn't. Flacco's cap number is friendlier this year than last. Ravens know what they are doing. I like Ed but there is a good reason they did not match the 4mil a year, he's not worth it.

They have lost a ton of guys though. I think they know their run with that core is over and are now in a reload/rebuild move. They will be competitive next year but after 5 years of playoff runs under Harbaugh and the Reed/Lewis era over they didn't wanna spend to keep it intact and try and really go after repeating.

Lost Reed/Boldin/Ellerbe/Polllard and McKinnie might be around the corner. Not a big deal really, they were probably going to regress anyway just given the makeup of their team and how it was on the older side.

I know they get Webb back and Suggs fully healthy but it is still a lot to loe all those guys with really no adequate replacements so far.

Ed Reed agrees to join New York Jets

S Ed Reed only lasted a few months with the Texans.
Things didn't work out for Ed Reed and the Houston Texans, so the ballhawking free safety opted for more familiarity Thursday when he joined his third team in less than a year.

The New York Jets announced a contract agreement with Reed and expected to have the five-time all-pro and former defensive player of the year on the practice field today.

Reed and Jets coach Rex Ryan overlapped for seven years with the Baltimore Ravens, who employed Ryan as their defensive coordinator before he took the big promotion in New York following the 2008 season.

The Jets have built a formidable defensive front seven but rank 24th in pass defense after trading all-pro cornerback Darrelle Revis in the offseason. Only four teams have managed fewer interceptions than New York's five.

Reed averaged seven per season in his final three years under Ryan's tutelage in Baltimore. Antonio Allen and Dawan Landry, a former Ravens teammate of Reed's, are the Jets' current starters at safety. But they've only combined for two picks through nine games.

The Jets have already faced the best quarterbacks on their schedule, splitting two games with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots and upsetting Drew Brees' New Orleans Saints in the last outing prior to their Week 10 bye.

Reed theoretically has time to work his way into the lineup as part of New York's nickel and dime packages — while getting his legs underneath him if need be — and could play more center field, especially given Allen's effectiveness at covering tight ends.

The Jets (5-4) currently hold the AFC's second wild-card spot, but only face two more established quarterbacks in their final seven games, the Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton (Week 15) and Joe Flacco (Week 12), the man largely responsible for the ring on Reed's finger.

Reed's 11-year stay in Baltimore culminated with last season's Super Bowl victory. But he wasn't re-upped amid GM Ozzie Newsome's overhaul of the defense and signed a three-year, $15 million deal with the Texans on March 22, hoping to serve as a missing puzzle piece for a franchise with its own championship aspirations.

However Reed was not the fast-flowing takeaway machine in Houston he'd been most of his career. He needed surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his hip April 30 and missed the entire offseason program, training camp and the Texans' first two regular-season games.

Reed has 16 tackles in seven games this season, but the nine-time Pro Bowler and NFL's active interception leader (61) failed to force a turnover.

His inability to make an impact and speculation he wasn't meshing with the team led to his release from the Texans on Tuesday. Demoted from the starting lineup, Reed was critical of Houston's defensive strategy after Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Reed cleared waivers on Wednesday and needed less than 24 hours to find his latest gig.
