Russia vs Northern Ireland was suspended do to snowfall from the previous night. They also had the luxury of not having to play another game within the next 4 days, so while they did postpone it to the next day, they still couldn't play it because the field wasn't in good condition. While I see the obvious similarities, they are also some differences. At the start of the game, the snow fall was pretty minimal. They did know they were racing against the clock, though. The storm projections were for it to be far worse later into the night and the next day, so there really wasn't a good possibility of playing that game the next day. Plus, the whole point of playing in Denver was to prepare for the Azteca's altititude on Tuesday. What national team is going to want to postpone it's game and lose a days rest right before it has to play in the most difficult stadium in the world. As I understand it, FIFA calls the shots pre-game....from there it is the ref's job. If they were going to suspend it, it should have been then and there and not after the game has been played halfway, where one team has the lead. That would have been very convenient for Costa Rica. Again, I paint a picture. If any national team, let's just say Mexico, comes here and they start the game in a drizzle. Costa Rica scores early and leads 1-0. Now sometime in the second half, it begins to rain heavily like it does here. Does it impede the "normal" flow of the game? Yes. But none the less, it is playable (and both teams play in the same conditions, not like it's a huge advantage for one team) and I know for a fact they have played a lot of games here in the rain. Now, if they decide to postpone that game forcing a restart of the full 90 minutes at 0-0, what scale would that national outrage reach? I feel quite confident it would be far greater than it is right now.
I hope they play this game in La Cueva. I want Costa Rica to do well and to make the World Cup.
