Only at the end did she smile for the camera.
Amanda Marcum Enfield, a supermodel who has been on the covers of Maxim, Elle and Vogue, is married to Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield. They met when she was searching for a ride from New York City to Boston in 2003 to watch Oklahoma State play a NCAA Tournament game and a mutual friend introduce them.
She’s an Oklahoman and a big Cowboys basketball fan. For a former star player at Penn, a guru for jump shooters and an aspiring basketball coach, she was a dream woman.
They were engaged six months after that trip, and they have three children, daughters Aila and Lily and son Marcum. For now, she is a stay-at-home mom but she told the Naples Daily News in 2011 that she may at some point get back into modeling.
After working as an assistant at Florida State for five seasons, Enfield became Florida Gulf Coast coach in 2011. He got the Eagles to the Atlantic Sun title game last season, and this year they were an upset winner over regular-season champion Mercer.
Friday night, the television cameras naturally found Amanda as she agonized through the final minutes of FGCU’s historic 2013 NCAA Tournament upset of Big East champion Georgetown. Florida Gulf Coast became only the seventh No. 15 seed in the history of the NCAA Tournament to defeat a No. 2 seed, the Eagles prevailing by a 78-68 margin after Georgetown rallied from a deep deficit to make it a game in the final minutes.
Wearing a blue tank top with her hair brushed straight, Amanda wore a look of pained anticipation throughout the final minutes. The curious thing was, after all of that it took forever for the network to deliver a reaction shot of her smiling after it became obvious FGCU would win.
What comes next?
A round of 32 date with either San Diego State. And maybe some phone calls from athletic directors shopping for a new coach and hoping Enfield will bring his wife along for a visit.
