LAS VEGAS -- Crews from three jurisdictions battled a four-alarm fire at the vacant Key Largo Casino on Flamingo Road near Paradise Road.

According to the county, the fire was reported about 3 p.m. Thursday. When crews arrived, heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the roof of the property. No injuries have been reported at this time. The Las Vegas and Henderson fire departments were called in to help fight the fire.

The fire was contained and crews are now dousing hot spots.

About 40 units and 120 crew members responded to the fire, county fire officials said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will be investigating the fire, as will Metro Police and the Clark County Fire Department, deputy fire chief Erik Newman said.

Newman said that in the past, police and fire officials have kicked out vagrants from the building. The building contains asbestos and other toxic material that might have been inhaled during the fire by firefighters and the public, he said.

The fire burned both in the rear and front of the building. Part of the back of the building and its roof collapsed, he said.

There is no word on how the fire started. Eastbound traffic on Flamingo Road is shutdown from Swenson Street to Howard Hughes Parkway. Westbound lanes have reopened to traffic from Paradise.

Oval Road can be used as an alternate route. The intersection of Paradise and Flamingo roads is closed in both directions, Metro Police said.

The building was built in 1974, and the casino closed its doors in January 2005. A high-rise condominium and hotel tower was originally planned to replace the old property, but that did not happen. The county reports the building was abandoned in 2007.

In 2008, the casino caught fire when, police said at the time, a man had broken into the building to steal its copper wiring. The casino's power had not been shut off and the man was electrocuted and caught fire, causing the casino to catch fire, too.

Brings back memories. I'd be in that craptastic place everyday placing bets instead of going to classes at UNLV back in 1998-2003.

dam shame they closed the place. i never stayed there cause it was always sold out, cost less than $20 a nite. their 1$ cheeseburgers were pretty good. when the grand plans to build a resort went poof they had already shuttered the place. now its another skeleton.
