The Chicago Cubs have an even more radical plan for Wrigley Field renovations than simply sticking a few ads around the park: The team wants to install a 6,000-square-foot video screen, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune.
At this point, the Tribune said, discussions have moved past the point of whether a large video board will be installed at the park and now center on where and just how large. For comparison, the Wrigley center field scoreboard, which will likely not be moved or replaced, is about 2,025 square feet, according to the report. That means a video screen would almost certainly have to be placed to the side of the scoreboard, which would block views from rooftop clubs across the street from Wrigley, and, without securing the rooftop clubs’ consent, that would invite a lawsuit, the Tribune said. It might also draw swift action from Alderman Tom Tunney, who represents the area and has been the rooftop club owners' staunchest ally in the Wrigley renovation discussion.
This, among many other issues, still hasn’t been resolved before the team’s self-imposed April 1 deadline to reach agreement before ownership will move forward on renovation plans, the Tribune reported.
Bleed Cubbie Blue estimated that a 6,000-square-foot video board could block as many as four different rooftop clubs’ views, and wondered if a screen that size would detract from Wrigley’s character in such a way as to devalue the game experience.
