Wednesday: 3-2, + 7.06 units

Baltimore. One unit. ML. (+120). What was Buck Showalter thinking Wednesday night, putting Tommie Hunter into a tie game? Orioles should be 2-0. Oh well, he's a good manager, and must have his reasons. On Thursday, the O's send Miguel Gonzalez, who looked magnificent in the last 2 months last year. Great stuff for a young pitcher, and deceptive. I'd play this at 2 units, but the Rays have seen him a couple of times already(last year). Gonzalez's last spring tune-up was a 5 Ip, one hit outing. Meanwhile the Rays are sending Roberto Hernandez(aka Fausto Carmona) out on the mound. He was arrested in the DR for using a false identity. Whatever his real name is, he's a sinker pitcher who gives up a lot of hits per inning, and rarely strikes out anyone. If he was any good, don't you think the pitching-poor Indians would have signed him- he was cheap. Cheap is what the Rays are, but they signed him, so now he has to pitch. The Rays also seem to have no at-home advantage at times, or at least can't hit at Tropicana Park. They really struggled to hit in the last 2 weeks of spring, while the O's hit fairly well. Both bullpens are really good, if you don't count Tommie Hunter.

Phillies. ML. (+126) One unit. I'll take a gamble that Medlen's spring troubles last one more game or at least a few innings. He gave up 15 runs over his last 10 IPs of the spring. Cliff Lee looked very sharp in his last outing, and only yielded 1 run in 15 IPs last year vs. Braves.

NY Mets. One unit -1(+110). The Padres are looking Padre-like early. I know Harvey and Niese pitched well, but the Pads looked helpless out there, whiffing 16 times in the last 2 games. Lefty Stults is about the same as lefty Clayton Richards, whom the mets beat up today- except Richards had a better spring. Mets are hot, Padres are not. Mets go 3-0 to start the year.

KC Royals. One unit. ML(+116) Royals should be finally seeing a mediocre pitcher in Gavin Floyd. Sale and Peavy were brutal the last 2 days to this hot hitting club(or are they?). Floyd got seriously roughed up his last outing of the spring, and is often not quite on his game to start most seasons. Guthrie pitched well last year joining the Royals after a tormented gig in Coors Field. He looked good this spring, and pitched well to finish up the spring, striking out 8 in his final outing. The Royals have the bullpen to finish.
