I am thinking about becoming a drinker of Scotch. Anyone here have any recommendations? I'm talking about beginners stuff; brand to start with, water -no water, ice etc. Thanks for whatever info you can give.

Straight up, Glenlevit is hard to beat for the money. If you're gonna mix it, Cutty Sark is a all-time fav and the price is right.

A good low budget Scotch...Grouse with just a tad of water. Single malts, I like Laphroaig ( an acquired taste as they say), McClelland's 12 year old and the aforementioned Glenlivett makes for a nice taste. My uncle when he visited from Scotland, seemed to be quite fond of J&B. The one he thought tasted like shite was Laphroaig, which surprised me. Depends on each individual's preference just like anything else.

Funny your uncle said that. The Laphroaig seems to be one of the go to scotches here for the Old Country Club gentleman. Some claim the best they've ever had...

I have always seen Scotch as a "grandpa" drink
Aka "country club gentlemen" :)

it def does seen like a drink you pick up a taste for with age. I guess it's because maybe gaining an acquired taste and respecting it served neat, instead of a mixer and tryin to only get drunk.

My dad was a big fan of Dewars so I grew up on that, but I love single malt either Glenlivet or Glenfiddich. I usually put an ice cube in. A couple of years ago, I tried a couple different types of Balvenie. I've had their 14, 15, and 17 year old. All very good. IMO, what you have to figure out is whether or not you like it "smoky". I don't. Happy drinking!

Anyone ever try The Macallan? I hear it's good but it's over priced. There have to be better scotches out there for the price. Just wondering how it tasted.

if your on a budget and want to start theres two things you should try. a blended called cairnleigh and a malt blend called monkey shoulder. both very good and hold their own against much more expensive bottles
