Thursday: 3-1, + 2.62 units

Atlanta -1. 2 units. (-125). The Cubs benefitted from a dismal start to the year by the Pirates. Now they're 2-1. I'm not sure the Cubs won, possibly the Bucs just gave away 2 games. But make no mistake about it, the Cubs hitting attack is awful right now. Many of their hitters are still looking for their first hit, and the Pirates didn't exactly send out any aces. Now Mike Minor is a risk. He didn't have a good spring, but I'm counting on his last minor league warm up, and fantastic last 2 months of 2012 to carry him through. The Cubs starter, Scott Feldman was truly bad this spring- 38 hits in 20 IPs. Scouting reports said that many of the hits were hard shots too, line drives and other bullets. And the Braves are hitting. Cliff Lee was dealing, and almost un-hittable Thursday night, but they'll see a batting practice type pitcher Friday night, and he's a righty, unlike Lee. Braves also have the bullpen edge by quite a bit. Marmol, the Cubs closer, almost gave away the Pirate game Thursday night.

SF Giants ML (-115). One unit. The Giants are raising their championship banner Friday afternoon among a large home crowd. Barry Zito, the starter, is facing the same Cardinals that he beat in Game 5 when the Giants were facing elimination. Zito had his best season in a while last year, even after having a rough spring. This spring he pitched much better so I think he is ready for the season. Lifetime these Cardinals are so-so against him, and that's important for a guy that relies on his curve so much. STL is coming off a 16 inning game Wednesday night vs. Arizona. The bullpen is a little overused for this early in the year. STL also faced much weaker pitching in Arizona than they'll see in SF, especially in the bullpen. Also, they'll be playing in a tougher hitting park than in Arizona. The Giants are hitting well, and have for the past couple of weeks, and they faced some tough pitching from the Dodgers. Westbrook is not likely to go more than 5 or so, so the bullpens will be a factor here, and the Giants have the edge. This Giants team is .337 vs. Westbrook lifetime.

My totals are not to be depended on, but I like the LA/Pitt under 7 tonight (+105). Not an official play, but I have a few quid on it. Pirates have 13 total hits in 3 games vs. Cub pitching. No one on the Dodgers is hot except for Crawford, and Kershaw leads the team in HR. Both have solid bullpens. Not an official play because both starters are iffy going into this game, but Greineke looked great in last tune-up vs. Angels (who had their starters in), and Sanchez has looked pretty good this spring too, but hasn't pitched well since 2010. Slider is working again for him.
