The late inning heroics last night by Atlanta with the game tying and game winning HR's in the ninth still has to have the Cubs realing but Jeff Samardzija is one tough customer vs. Atlanta. Samardzija had only two hits in eight scoreless innings vs. Pittsburgh in his first start of the 2013 season and in 2012 won both starts vs. Braves with 18 k's and a 1.29 ERA. Dan Uggla and Jason Heyward are 2 for 14 vs. Samardzija but both have had HR's. Freeman is 0-6 and looks to finally break through against Samardzija today. Hudson gave up three runs six hits and three BB's in his last outing but is 2-1 3.44 ERA in six career starts vs. Chicago. Most thought today's game would provide the best matchup and it may well pan out but it will be extremely hard if not impossible to reproduce the dramatics from last night. Samardzija should be focused and primed to pitch well but will Cubs as a team be able to shake of the heartbreak from last night on quick turn around time to make a showing this afternnon? Will Atlanta and Juston Upton keep getting the timely hits to sweep the Cubs? Weather is good today for the Sunday Finale but Braves still have to face Samardzija before the celebration can continue. Chicago hitting much improved last night even though vs Teheran. Hudson still may be struggling with control issues and J. Upton is just too good right now. The focus today will be Over 3 -120 First Five Innings even with Samardzija on the mound with Uggla and Heyward both with big knocks against him in the past. Maybe Freeman's day to shine also.

Cubs draw blood in the first but Braves leave man on third. Samardzija does look good so far. 1-0 Cubs after one. Beautiful day for a game after this past week's cold rainy weather.

Now he is up to 8 K's through 3 complete innings. That will get your attention.

10 K's and throwing 97 mph. If Freeman was healthy today and in the lineup, he would not hit it either. Samardzija just mowing em down left and right.

Samardzija with a dirty dozen K's ='s a 1-1 game after five innings and a dud for me today. Tried getting water from the wrong well today.

Well if Samardzija could have kept his composure after two wild pitches and a hit bats man and regained himself he may have weathered the storm. As it was Braves capitalize on mistakes and Samardzija wonders what could have been after an up till then outstanding stellar outing. 5-1 Braves Final as Atlanta gets the sweep and the focus now is Miami and the first road trip of the season.

<section class="content cf">OAKLAND -- Jeff Samardzija's start against the A's on Sunday carried a little extra meaning for 33,195 at the Coliseum.
It was the Shark's first start against his former team, which dealt for him midway last year in an October-minded trade.

Samardzija fared well in the 7-3 win. He finished eight innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out five.
"I have the utmost respect for those guys over there," said Samardzija, who was part of a five-player trade to the White Sox in the offseason. "I've never seen a team play so hard every day. They come to play, they're professionals, and I loved being a part of it.
"So I knew I had to come in and have good stuff today and they were going to come at me. They swung at my heater early and I had to make some adjustments. They played hard, as I expected."
Samardzija (3-2, 4.58 ERA) looked better the more pitches he threw and his 120 were his most this season. Samardzija's biggest mistake was Max Muncy's homer in the fourth on an 0-2 count.
The Shark was at 112 pitches after the seventh frame, but manager Robin Ventura had no intention to relieve him.
"He's always been a high-pitch guy," Ventura said. "I think as the game went along you're looking at him as just getting sharper. You understand he's been there. I think he thrives on it somewhat. It was easy to have him go back out there. You can go hitter to hitter, but he seems to thrive on that."
