I turn on the end of port/dallas. Dall-4.5..... Port down 3 with ball and 12 seconds...miss layup and port tries to foul...no call and vince carter throws to other end of court where shawn marion lays it in at the buzzer for the cover. Hmmmm...seen this type of ending a few times this year now.

Think about how many times you've seen this...I'm guessing less then 5?...now think how many total gams are played throughout the year...thousands?...it stands out when it happens but do you really think Shawn Marion knew he needed to make a last second layup to cover the closing line spread?....Don't get me wrong I completely understand what your saying and yes I do believe some things have to be "fixed" as far as refs trying to make a game lean a certain way but no one person can control the sole outcome. Plus imagine how many times players have easy uncontested last second layups they dribble out that could cover lines....just part of the game in my opinion

Do i think shawn marion knew the spread? Yes, i do. Im not a conspiracy guy at all....I didnt have a dog in the fight here....i just happen to be watching it.

I always question the nba for some reason. The end of games are often shady when the spread is involved. Sometime you will see a 9 point fav play defense on the last possession like it's the nba finals when they are up 10. Other times they will let the other team take an uncontested layup.

You could be right hell I have no idea...if he did know the spread I think him taking the shot is more out of giving himself a good laugh knowing he changed the end result for POR backers who surely thought they had the W after the timeout with 12 seconds left. But I don't really think he did it because anyone had said they needed to cover the line. Maybe he just wanted a good laugh on the flight home! Who knows man weird stuff does happen I'll agree with that!

Think of how many things the player can do in these situations. There really are only a few and while there is some late game protocol, i.e run the clock etc. This doesn't happen EVERY time so when it doesn't happen people think oh must be fishy etc. There just isn't really much for the player to do and they don't do the same thing every time.

If it was fixed I don't think they would let portland come back from 25 down.

but also, how many games have that opportunity?
99.999% of the time you hold the ball when in that position. Carter is an 80% career free throw shooter

Several years ago for about 5 or 6 year stretch I bet a significant number of NBA totals (for decent amounts). I generally paid pretty close attention to the action. There were numerous occasions where the game was looking like an under and there'd be a ton of points scored in the last minute or so, mostly due to fouls. What was weird was just too often to be a coincidence, they would get to the number and then decide to stop fouling, even when all logic says to keep fouling. Everything would play out like they knew exactly what number (total) they needed it to land on.

Marion was scoring because all he knew is that there were ~5 seconds left in the game and a score would put the game at two scores and out of reach. It just so happened that once he got to the basket there was less than a second, but he made the correct play, IMO.
