Memorabilia dealer admits to altering famed $2.8 million Honus Wagner card

Bill Mastro admitted to altering a Wagner card, like the one here, that has since sold for $2.8 million. (AP)
We all know the lure of the famous 1909 T206 Honus Wagner baseball card. It is the holy grail of cards, garnering the most interest from high-profile owners and the biggest price-tags at auction. One of the 50-100 in circulation sold at auction last week for $2.1 million.
Now a big development: Notorious memorabilia dealer Bill Mastro has admitted to altering the most famous version of the card to better its appearance and increase its value. Within the hobby, some have believed for years that Mastro trimmed the edges of his card, which was later owned by Wayne Gretzky and now belongs to Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick. Kendrick bought the card for $2.8 million in 2011.
Mastro is currently trying to procure a federal plea agreement on charges that he used shill bidders in auctions to drive up prices and sold fake items — including a lock of Elvis Presley's hair and a 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings trophy, that are both believed to be fake.
As part of his effort to save face with the law, the Chicago Sun-Times reports, Mastro admitted to doctoring his T206. It's something he denied for many years. That still wasn't enough, though, as U.S. District Court Judge Ronald A. Guzman rejected a 30-month prison agreement that Mastro had made with federal prosecutors.
Want to hear the crazy part? One auction expert and the card's owner think this turn of events will increase the value of the card.
Through a Diamondbacks spokesperson, Kendrick — the card's current owner — told Yahoo! Sports:
"As a collector of rare cards and a fan who enjoys the history of the game of baseball, today's news does not change my pride in owning the Honus Wagner T-206 card. In fact, I've been advised that the notoriety of this turn of events has actually increased the value of the card and I will continue to enjoy having it as part of the 'Diamondbacks collection.' "
The Daily Mail talked to Steve Levine of Goldin Auctions (which sold the T206 last week) and he believes the same:
"I think in this industry and hobby, the bigger the story, the better. Also, especially if you can verify it ... Now it’s the infamous Bill Mastro-trimmed-Gretzky-Honus Wagner card."
Dishonest as it was, Mastro's trimming the card did work. The version he once owned is the highest-graded and most expensive. The one sold last week has been deemed three grades lower than the one Mastro cut.
Now we wait to see what happens next time it's sold.

Just goes to show how legit PSA is in this industry.

They are just mowing through as many cards as they can throughout the day to make the almighty dollar.

Consistency within their grading is not apart of their master plan.

As pointed out, this should reveal what a joke PSA grading is. How legit are PSA 10 cards now? What about the 9.5's that could've been 10's?

This is a shame for sure.. PSA takes a hit here, but still you cannot have any other way of "authenticating" other than grading.. so it still must be done. I wonder what will come of it though.

To be honest PSA is not the industry leader in PRE- WW2 cards anyway

SGC has been the industry leader in accurate grading/resale value/etc and its not even close for the older cards.

PSA is more popular overall than any though.. Beckett is sub par in grading standards and resale value..

Nothing illegal about it. It's the grading companies job to figure out if someone cut the corners. That's what they get paid for.

Anyone have any updates on PSA? I have some 1960's and 70's cards I want to get graded and all locals say PSA is widely accepted. Bench, Ryan Rookies along with some 60's Maris and Mantle and Clemente. Look good but not centered and one has a gum stain. Going to hold for my kids but want to have the decent ones graded in case I get wiped out and my wife puts them in a yard sale for a nickel. Couple local card shops swear by PSA but the rumors make me nervous, especially with the Ryan and Mantle cards.

Comments appreciated

You should still use PSA. There isn't really an alternative or anything and they are mostly respected.

As long as the cards are graded like 6-7ish they should get some good $ if they are rookies. Don't think people expected 8+s for 60s topps cards

Even if I had billions, I would never buy any sports cards, they're way over priced as an investment.

Most expensive card I ever had was Michael Jordan's 2nd year Fleer card, & that was bought back when I was 19 years old in 1989

BGS is more respected but PSA is right there with them .

Thanks Pats, that's what I keep hearing. For the most part the cards are clean except the borders aren't centered. We will see, who knows if anyone will still be collecting baseball cards when my kids are my age.

Thanks, Beckett was my collection bible when I was younger. After 1989 it was hard to keep up with all the different cards coming out. After the 1994 strike I gave it up for awhile but still kept up with my good cards. Beckett was my go to but I hear mixed reports on their grading services

Beckett has 2 grading services. I low end called Beckett and a high end called BGS.

Dont mistake the 2. Beckett is worthless.

Make sure you go with BGS

Hmm, didn't know that. Glad you clarified, I will check them out. Just nervous about sending some of my long time fav cards off to get graded. Sounds like they all have it down to a science. It's not like I can mark it to make sure I get the same card back.
