Top recruits say they would beat Michael Jordan one-on-one in his prime

Maybe they're not old enough to remember how ridiculously good Michael Jordan was. Maybe they misunderstood the question. Maybe they were just joking around and it didn't come through in print.

Regardless, the answers some of the class of 2013's top high school prospects gave USA Today when asked how they'd fare in a game of one-on-one against Jordan in his prime are just plain bizarre.

Three of the eight players polled actually predicted they would defeat Jordan, though the comments by Duke-bound Matt Jones have enough false bravado to them that it appears he's kidding. There's no such obvious nuance to the quotes attributed to Kentucky-bound recruits Dakari Johnson and Andrew Harrison.

Said Johnson: "I’m taking him to the post every time. He’d stop me a couple of times, but I’d just keep going back down there. I’d just contest his jump shots and pray that he’d miss. I think in the end, I’d get him though. I’m too big down there."

Said Harrison: "I think he’d get a couple buckets here and there, but then I’d start to lock him down and give him buckets. Yeah, I think I’d get him."

A couple buckets here and there?! Seriously?!

Johnson is an elite center and Harrison is the nation's most coveted point guard, but the idea they'd get more than a bucket or two off early-90s MJ is laughable. After all, 50-year-old MJ reportedly had his way with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist recently and I'd take my chances with Kidd-Gilchrist against either Johnson or Harrison in a game of one-on-one right now.

Again, I hesitate to be too critical of either of these players because it's possible the tone of their response failed to come through in print. But if that's not the case, they're going to be in for a rude awakening in college and at the professional level as the competition begins to get tougher.

That is fucking laughable...Jordan was one of three players in history who could completely dominate a game on both ends of the court. What these dumb asses fail to realize is Jordan was the best defender in the game as well. These idiots don't know what defense is. They would be lucky to score one on one going up against Jordan without any help from picks etc.

It's definitely youth. I mean I barely remember how good Jordan was, I admit I fail to give the proper respect...

Why do they ask them about Jordan? Why don't they ask them about Lebron? Wonder how many would say they could take Lebron? Oh by the way, you can't beat Lebron, you sure as hell ain't beatin Jordan

I would absolutely bet that MJ could beat any of those kids today. What a joke. Then again, it's probably the youth factor more than anything. These kids were practically in diapers during Michael Jordan's prime. If you weren't of relevant age to appreciate it at the time - watching the greatest in history in his prime - then you simply have no clue, which is the case with these recruits. Confidence is one thing, but to make a completely laughable statement like this, I hope this ultimately drops their draft stock in a couple of years down the line (Unless they've shown signs of maturity in their college years).

It would be awesome if MJ challenged them to play one on one right now and crushed them.

Jordan is old, slow and fat.

I doubt he could beat his kids one on one.

MKG shit is a joke.

You guys don't understand a one on one game is different than being the best in the NBA.

Just like all of MJ's dunks are so weak now, not even worth talking about. Every kid can do them in High School.

These kids will suck in the NBA but anyone can go on a decent streak or back someone down one on one.

He just did that, these kids just need to speak to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Michael Jordan beat Michael Kidd-Gilchrist one-on-one

Don't snicker when Michael Jordan says he's trying to get back down to his playing weight.

Whether he comes back to the NBA or not, Jordan still can beat you in one-on-one ... unless you're better than the No. 2 pick in the draft.

Charlotte Bobcats rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist said Friday in Houston that 49-year-old Jordan beat him in a one-on-one game. Jordan turns 50 Sunday, while Kidd-Gilchrist is seven months away from turning 20.

"It was hard for me," Kidd-Gilchrist said before playing in the Rising Stars Challenge rookie-sophomore game Friday night. "I lost. He's the greatest man that ever played the game.

"Oh, yeah. He's good."

This might be easier to comprehend if Jordan had any clear physical edges on Kidd-Gilchrist. But at 6-7, 232 pounds, the rookie out of Kentucky has the exact size and athleticism of the types of players who guarded 6-6 Jordan night-in and night-out for almost two decades in the NBA.

Kidd-Gilchrist hasn't had a great rookie season, averaging 9.1 points and 5.7 rebounds a game.

Maybe the extra weight helped Jordan push around the rookie, though. He had a phenomenal post-up game back in the day.

Or maybe Kidd-Gilchrist went easy on his boss, though he told CSN Houston that he didn't.

Either way, 49-year-olds are not supposed to beat 19-year-olds in this game. But Jordan plays by his own rules.
